It's been quite the fortnight. Expectations so high, outcomes so low and the title challenge has turned into a watery fart. Of course, it's not over - but it's now a longer shot than Shergar to win the next Epsom Derby!

Hoggy is back to talk through your points of view - whether to vent, laugh or rage. And he attempts to not be angry!!

Enjoy, at least as much as you can.

Shergar died in the 80s, therefore him winning the derby is impossible.... Much like our league chances with this bunch of bottle merchants.

Majority of the squad love being a Rangers player until they need to actually be one. 2nd best and nearly won is their default setting - comfortable being the unlucky nearly men - no use to use at all. Rangers need to be front runners, leading the way and demanding that happens. Overhaul needed yet again. Its just tiring seeing the same failings year on year.

Graham Hendry

Scott Wright isn’t miles better than Ross Co or Dundee players. The issue is that’s his level of

Hendi

Sounds like your trying to start to plant seeds of doubt against the manager. Based on a shower of losers, reverting to type? If you think anyone else would get a tune out of this mob you're dreaming.

David Herd

Must admit, I have no idea what team I'd pick for Hampden. If we drop everyone who deserves it, there's just about nobody left! Players like Raskin, Balogun and McCausland are getting better each week by hardly playing.

WILLIAM JACK

Hoggy, tend to agree with much of what you say but feel you and others are being unfair on Clement re: his recent public pronouncements. I doubt he believes all his PR statements post the Dundee match but taking a mentally fragile bunch of players and throwing them under the bus days before a cup semi (and with the league a massive long shot but still possible) would be utterly self-defeating. He has arguably over-performed with this squad but we cannot judge him on how he manages a group of sub-par players he mainly inherited. Let's see how he builds and manages his own team. If Diomande and Cortes are indicators of how we might recruit, I for one am optimistic. References to losing credibility and parallels with Monaco are the kind of hyperbolic nonsense we could do without imho. Ah, that's better now for a cup of tea. Thanks for the Hampers, they make Saturday chores a bit more fun. :-)

A horses leg wrapped in brown paper was left on the steps of the Gardia’s HQ with a ransome note from the IRA. “ A million £punts or the horse will never run again”.

David Baillie

I disagree with your comments on Scott Wright. Dhanda and Murray showed more in that game than we’ve seen all season from Wright.

Gordon Millar

Hi Hoggy - Thanks for taking my question, it was poorly worded, my point was more thats it's well documented that we missed out on talent that went to Italy but could have been mainstays of our midfield, defence etc more than the Shakland transfer speculation.....not a go at the board as such, but you need to know where your money is being spent.

Andy Gray

That is a terrible take on Scott Wright. Guy has shown his level and he’s nowhere near being the best player at either of those clubs. As for Goldson, problem is no manager in last 4 has been willing to drop him (or Tav or Lundstram) when form has dropped off or to lower league teams in cup games.

CRAIG CASSELLS

Hoggy, you have overlooked the £4.5m fee paid for Sakala.

Gregg

I think the David Weir analogy is getting into the misty eyed realms of Terry Butcher kicking dressing room doors. My experience - at an average amateur level - is this generation don’t react well to that sort of thing now. It gets the opposite reaction to what you’d hope for. Look around football - the angry men are all no more. I grew up with Ferguson, Gough and then outside that your Roy Keane’s etc. they just don’t exist any more and lots of our fans are still looking for them

Tommy

No Hoggy, we knew we had Silva but we also knew we needed something more We spent the money on Diamonde and we should have went for Shankland Nothing to do with hindsight, we all knew we needed goals for the run in Shankland against Benfica, probably not Shankland against Ross County and Dundee, yes absolutely

Spoon

I think the idea that the transfer business was 20/20 hindsight is inaccurate. Lots during the summer didn’t join the bandwagon around the signings. The talk at the time from those defending the players coming in was that this league would be a scoosh compared to the players current leagues and anyone knocking the incoming players was misguided. Filling a team with sparkly but risky loans is a poor solution to scouting we have adopted instead of structured building of teams. Silva was not welcomed universally, the issues with having a raft of young untested loans was not universally lauded it’s not hindsight. On Shankland we need to bin the prejudice around spending money in Scotland as if the teams here either don’t deserve any money or the players are worth less. We will happily take a punt on any English based player or a fancy name and assume a base value that we seem to half if they are Scottish. I said at the time I would have bought Shankland and paid the market value for a striker of that level and goal return. I think you only need to look at the values of guys like Dessers, Sima, Silva or even Lammers to see what money actually gets you. The only hindsight that seems to be going on in areas of the support, not directed at you Hoggy, is rewriting all the claims that we didn’t need a striker when more than half the support knew we did, and a significant percentage DID think Shankland was worth it. I would still sign him, as a general rule we need local talent proven in the league, we have allowed Europe to impact our domestic product and focus. Going deep in Europe is good but there are no trophies for the last 16 or last 8 or beaten finalists regardless of the joy at the time. We should be hoovering up local talent and paying market value not taking punts on drop outs from the premier league or fancy names loans who have gone for stupid money. I have said it before nobody is beating our door down to sign people from us, yes they grab them on low risk no fee transfers but genuinely who has gone onwards and upwards from us ? You can tell the quality of our squad by their moves after they leave, most have drifted to obscurity. Great pod, love the discussion and just an opinion.

Ronnie Gallacher

We shouldn’t take what anyone says to the media literally or, it seems, personally if we think it is patronising, it’s just not. In the main, the manager was talking to the players not the supporters as, to say what he and we think, would be counterproductive for a group of players who need to win 7 games or their and our season ends on a whimper! I’m still backing them, we’ve suffered a blip, a pretty poor one at that, however let’s stay behind them, it’s not all over.

Vanb bryceter

See this shankland patter its boring as... we couldnt and wouldnt pay what hearts wanted. Like it or not we have strikers who do score. The fundamental issue just now is we have a pedestrian midfield who lack the guile to provide the kind of service needed for the front players

Vanb bryceter

Same as get rid of everyone its depressing as ... clement has a cup we are still in a title race a semi final tomorrow yes we are playing shite and i am not convinced we can get over the line but i will back the team until its over. Recruitment in summer will reenergise the support and the team im sure. Clement knows whats what now no doubt and finally for me shankland was and is never the answer for us he would be a squad player and that is reality

Gregg

I don’t think the difference in the Dundee game was a striker - there was no quality at all going up to them. Not sure it matters who played up front in that game. I’d have taken a punt on him after Dundee united/ Belgium. £4.5m is too much - if we can get the fee down I wouldn’t be against getting him in the summer

Vanb bryceter

Absolutely spot on we need leaders in each of the thirds. Im also hoping Tav taking every free kick shy corner penalty gets phased out or some variety introduced. Its mind numbing watching him trying to do it all and the others standing by watching when its obv he is not at it.

Tommy

The team has ran out of steam for sure. Shankland or another striker may have kept us in the race a bit longer in my opinion

Tom

No surrender Glasgow Rangers, f#€£ the hope.

David D

Ian it was nice to meet you at the Bierkeller on Wednesday, pity it couldn't have been under better circumstances. I'm channeling my inner Marvin Andrews 'Keep believing' WATP

Gordon Millar

Couldn't agree more, you have made the point that I tried to make much better than I did.....I'm honest enough to say that I didn't think Shakland was worth it but I was angry that we didn't shop locally when the likes of Lewis Ferguson and Josh Doig were within our grasp for signing.....we laud the English and foreign players above our own and then complain when we get out fought/worked by decent young Scottish talent..... excellent post 👍

David Kiltie

The question is asked why did we spend £4.5 m on Diomande instead of Shankland? The nuance is that Diomande is loan to buy, so the outlay will be in next year’s accounts to stay the right side of FFP rules. I can’t imagine Hearts would have agreed to such a deal. As discussed, with 3rd place guaranteeing European group stage football next season Shankland’s value to Hearts hits another level.

David Kiltie

Apropos Rona’s suggestion, if the club issues shares then that is recorded as equity in the accounts. Per the FFP rules we need to maximize revenue so something along the lines of an enhanced MyGers scheme would tick that box. I notice the media’s double standards in respect of finance. James Anderson gifts Hearts £6m a year and this is spun positively. Imagine if John Bennet gave us £25m a year - there would be uproar about cheating and financial doping.

Rona Bluebell

We have 54000 MyGers members. If everyone was asked for a one off £500 that’s 27 million. Or tier it so some can pay more. Or something! It’s a misery tax. Pay it and the misery stops 😊

David Kiltie

Good idea, Rona. It would have to be planned carefully to satisfy the FFP small print.

Bob MacCallum

Hoggy, when you name-checked me re Dessers, I didn't explode, I cut myself shaving!!!!

Spoon

You’re spot on with the other talent Gordon, agree fully. It’s frustrating mate, especially as you get slated when you raise concerns about a Silva or Lammers and the known goal return when they sign. People pointing to lesser leagues and fees as if those override actual goals. I defend Dessers on here not because I think he is the answer, not as I believe he should be the main number 9 but compared to many others in the front line he has actually scored goals. Not enough, not often enough but more than the other ‘better’ players. Until we get goals across the team middle to front and even from the Centre Backs we are going to struggle, A guy like Shankland as a proper poaching focal point is worth £4m to me, the fact we pay it to Hearts not Anderlecht or Fenerbache doesn’t matter. It might even actually build some bridges with clubs and put as back to leading the SPFL and. It sitting on our own in a corner.

Spoon

Think your spot on Tommy, we need to stop the notion strikers who actually score are cheap. I’m sure a deal could have been done around the £4 mark and given what we spent on wages and fees elsewhere that’s not a lot for a proper 20+ a season goalscorer. Agree also with Gregg though on service. The service to strikers is pathetic and the goals from middle to front out with the 9 is chronic.

Ian MacLeod

With regards to Ronas initial suggestion of donating money to improve the squad , I can image the uproar if the 5 million was blown on a Sam Lammers or given as a retirement package for John Lundstrum . However ring fencing 1 million a season for the best young Scottish talent is something I could be on board with . Barron and Miller are two that spring to mind .

Doug

He's not the greatest player in the world but Scott Wright has put in solid performances in key games. Important goals in the Semi Finals and Final of both cups that led us to winning them, and some key Europa League performances with goals and assists, no more so than for Kamara against Leipzig. He may not be good enough to be a regular player for us, but he's certainly a level above Dundee/Ross County.

Doug

I completely agree we need to be smarter in the local market, but we need to do it with young players. The problem with "market value" is it doesn't equate equally between the UK & Europe. Our market for quality players is skewed by England (both the EPL & Championship). This means we could end up overpaying for local talent because clubs can push the value to what English clubs will pay. That effect, while still present on the continent isn't a pronounced at the level we're shopping. What we absolutely should be doing, is hoovering up young talent before others fully realise it's there.

Doug

You were right when you said "titles" plural. Tavernier has four league titles to his name in his career, two in Scotland and two in England. Some like to ignore anything that isn't a top flight title, but you can only win the competitions you're in. If fans want to invest money, and especially if it's a one off, don't invest in players invest in infrastructure. A player is temporary and could end up being rubbish. If we help fund stadium improvements, adding a few thousand extra seats, that's a recurring investment from sales for the ongoing future. That would be the smart fan investment.

Spoon

Agree to disagree. I would rather buy local proven in the league talent even if at a perceived premium than take punts on wonder kids. We seem to get antsy when clubs ask real money for decent players like they don’t deserve it. We might even build bridges by formalising transfers between us and the other clubs. Either way your right that the EPL has an impact on pricing but sometimes it’s better to pay that bit more to get something you know is going to work for you, will settle in and deliver quickly.
