AGS

Hopefully he leaves, never been a great fan but what he gives and numbers are mental: would just like to see a new direction; whatever the reasons trophy wise Tav/Gold/Bar/Jack etc. haven’t delivered

Martin Boyd

Re the Youths / B team or whatever we are calling them this year. We don’t get value from running these sides , I know you could point to Patterson paying for a few years running. But I think it should be there to supply players for the first team and money to be used by the club. Buy Watson loan him back buy other good players be they in League 1 down here loan them out. If they are good enough for first team great if not sell them. We should be looking at £1+m for Lowry , bet we don’t get anything for him. I’m 62 this year and Rangers have rarely got value from their Youths. I would love to see Rice come through next year but I think we will be buying 19- 24 year olds from abroad instead, not sustainable.

Vanb bryceter

I agree with the sentiment . However ill caveat it with having seen multiple trophies including our own 9 in a row previously. These players you mentioned gave me some of the greatest nights of my life during the run to Seville. Maybe it was because it was also the saddest time of my life as i lost my mum in March of that year i cant seperate it. Those Thurday nights were everything i needed and ill never forget the feeling they gave me after each victory was secured including the massive hangovers as i celebrated and grieved at the same time. They will leave with my thanks and good wishes for their futures and they shouldnt be forgotten for that magnificent run

Charlie Nicolson

Is there any point in having partnerships with other clubs if we can't farm out youngsters on loan to them?

Andrew Hind

How are youth players supposed to develop playing only a handful of games, I thought the lowland league was a good idea it would at least get them regular games, however our 1st team gain from our youth system has been abysmal

John Jamieson

Can’t tell me Cole McKinnon couldn’t do more than what Silva has done for us. I get it’s a lot of pressure but we need to start committing to some sort of pathway to the first team

Al Robert

Would there be a worry of us scrapping the youth team to purchase the best young players in Scotland, trigger a wave of other Scottish clubs doing the same thing which would the reduce the quality of these players we can actually choose from?

Dougie

Re the youth system. Can't remember where it came from, but I heard a very good point about youth development, which I think was in reference to Ajax. They don't try to bring players up to be superstars, and have one in a blue moon go for crazy money. Their setup is geared towards producing players for their squad, players who come through the ranks learning the system and tactics etc so that they can bolster the first team squad when they're ready, and this frees up money to spend on 'star' players if they need to.

Andy MacArthur

The fact that teams like Motherwell and Killie are producing better young players than our academy is a red flag. Hoovering up Scottish talent is useful but the point in our academy is to prevent us having to do that. The amount of young players we have produced who leave and disappear into lower league obscurity tells us it’s not lack of opportunity for the players. It’s lack of quality. I still have hope for Rice and McKinnon. Both have deserved more opportunities this season I think.

Gregg

He’s a centre midfielder in fairness - not like for like

Stephen

Is there not a rule that you need to have an academy to get a license to play in UEFA competitions? Could be wrong but I thought that was one of the reasons that Brentford restarted their academy

Doug

I don't think there's any argument that young players should be getting more minutes. Can we really say we'd be any worse of if a player like McCausland was getting half of Scott Wright's minutes? Would our winger options be all that worse if half of Silva's mins went to Glenn Middleton if we'd kept him? Silva has two goals, no assist in thirteen league games, Middleton is sitting with four goals and thirteen assists in thirty-five games (albeit a level lower). Another commenter quite rightly notes we should be looking for some of our back-ups to be young Scottish players, third back-ups most certainly. This allows us to focus our money more on first team players, training up the wider squad. That would also lead to the profit margins on these players being greater.

Martin Boyd

Everyone doesn’t have to be a star just good enough to play a few games and fit the system , we could get that with McKinnon, Lowry , Watson of Killie or the boy from Aberdeen we were linked with. Watching Cifuentes and the like half arse it should stop.

Gazza G

This youth conundrum goes back 40 years where only the very best gets a look in. However if we scrap our youth system we drive hundreds of youngsters into the grateful arms of our rivals. Swallow our pride and re-enter the lowland league. Bide our time until B teams are admitted to the pyramid or the Euro super league changes the landscape for everyone.

Stewart Campbell

With 5 subs these days it’s a joke our young players don’t get more game time, especially in games when we are winning.

Graham Roy

There seems to be a disconnect between the youth set up and the club at the moment. The current situation with B team is a joke and needs fixed. I get that the club didn’t feel the B league was good enough standard but surely some games are better than nothing?! I still maintain the old reserve league worked and remember going to several games especially when injured players made a comeback. Expand that to 16 teams and it would give the youngsters regular games with a mixture of experienced players on both sides.

Gregg

Yes - he just came on for the last 10 mins or so. It’s not his position though - think it was just for legs. Always liked him when I’ve seen him - looks like he has a great attitude. Double he’ll make it sadly

David Clapperton

The reality is, that if there’s no continuity in a winning 1st team manager then there’s no pathway to 1st team for young players. The manager needs to win, right now, or he’s out on his arse and you can be 100% sure the next guy in isn’t risking the same fate by throwing in young boys. That’s why Klopp or Fergie could do it n still have the buy in from a support. Because they built up a level of trust by winning more times than not, year after year. Don’t forget the circumstances that led to Zak Lovelace and Ross McAusland getting a shot in our first team this year. It was because Steven Davis knew he wasn’t getting the job so he could play these young boys without any blow back on him. The very sad truth is that if a 16 year old kid has a real chance of being a top professional footballer and is signing his first contract he’s better off not signing with Rangers.

David Campbell

What annoys me is seeing teams like barca playing 16-17year olds in champions league quarter finals and we can't give Bailey rice any games. Cole McKinnon gets game time against Benfica but been nowhere near it domestically. I appreciate the very top talents will be gone when 16 but we still should be doing more and that is no excuse.

Graham Jones

Glad to see the academy and youth development being discussed, because it’s been an issue for a number of years now. We’re in the worst place in many ways, because we’re on the doorstep of the richest league in a Europe. England has regularly recruited from Scotland for over a hundred years. Let’s face it, we built English football, so it’s no surprise they come now and cherrypick the best talent before we get them to sign professional contracts. It’s at that point where there needs to be more protection, or the game will wither and die. If UEFA fail to act, then the death of the grassroots of the game will lie at their door. This isn;t something that can be solved by tinkering with different systems for developing players, because our young players are swamped by agents promising them money and glamour. We need the game to be set up with stricter pathways for young impressionable people making their way in the game.

Scott Cameron

Sensible discussion as ever. Academy is failing and i wouldn't encourage any talented young player to go to Rangers as you see what's happened to Bailey Rice. Without a pathway kids and parents will look elsewhere quite rightly.

Stephen

The fans have to take a bit of responsibility too. Would we accept a season of not challenging for any trophies but getting 5 or 6 young players lots of game time, allowing them to learn from their mistakes in the hope that it benefits us over the next few years? No chance. Manager knows one draw leads to a meltdown so he is quite right to protect himself.

Billy Forrester

Shocking comment for our skipper, he is deserving of one and I along with 50.000 others will gladly pay to go, magnificent service from Tav who cost us next to nothing.

Stephen

Agree. We will never have a defender who scores 120 + goals again. I really don’t understand the hate he get. Would love to see how many points we would be behind if we were to take away all the goals he has scored this season and replace him with a fullback who has the scoring record of ,say, Barasic. Would have got nowhere near the Europa league final without his goals either.

Greig Ward

Listen tonight brilliant show as always. I posted this last night on ff but though it might be of interest to folk on here. Im quite surprised by his decision to move. I was invited to an event that Rangers put on at the regional performance centre in Dundee and had a one to one chat with zeb for about 20 mins. We got to watch a youth training session and zeb then did a presentation showing what Rangers were looking to achieve with the academy. They wanted to get local youth coaches involved and helping them find the best of the young players in our area to hopefully get a step in front of Dundee and Dundee United. Came out the meeting proud as punch and even my fellow coach who’s a massive Arab was blown away by it. We were promised any help we wanted, can ask to go to auchenhowie to view training sessions anything we wanted. At the end of the meeting we were told we’d get an email with a survey and they would be in regular contact but as was probably always going to happen we’ve not heard a peep from anyway in the academy since then and a coach from on of our older aged teams predicted in leaving the presentation that it would all be bluster and promises and they never follow up on things.

Richard McLuckie

One of the issues is the fan base seems to think that the youth system is only a success of we produce world class players, what's wrong in producing a few squad players instead. Players who might make 20-25 appearances in a season but contributes to the season tally.

Brian Rae

The B team situation is ridiculous and I can't imagine what those players are all feeling right now. Ignoring the failure of the youth academy for a minute, I think this affects us even deeper as the current Uefa rules regarding homegrown players have hammered us since we got back into Euro competition. 4 club trained players are needed with a total of 8 that have all been trained in Scotland for 3 years or so. A full Euro squad of 25 players that are all good enough to play if required hasn't been achieved in this time and our excellent progress has meant that the same 17 or so players are required to play twice per week for months of the season. It also means leaving out certain players that would normally be included, Ridvan and Dowell for example. It's quite possibly a hopeless situation in its current form when you're neighbouring the richest league in world football. Knowing that any of our elite-level youths will be EPL-bound and never get the chance to play for us is a sickner TBH. I read that Zeb Jacobs was contractually required only to give a month's notice, that doesn't scream stability or forward planning.

Gavin MacDonald

There’s a very difficult situation in the Academy just now. We are almost in purgatory where we need to develop home grown players for the 1st team for our Euro squad list but we can’t seem to keep the really good ones long enough for us to be comfortable putting them into the 1st team. The Ajax model is much touted by the club and everyone as the one to follow; our issue as a fan base though is we aren’t patient enough to follow it, Ajax have players at 16/17 if they have the ability to develop into the first team/big sales and allow them to make mistakes and develop, we however make our minds up collectively after 5mins of their debut, and if they make 1 mistake they are done for in the eyes of some. Don’t know what the solution is to be honest, but we can’t keep losing players to academies down south, and if we can’t offer the wages they do, then we maybe need to provide them an immediate pathway/support to make their move away from Rangers a bigger move than to an EPL academy before dropping to the championship, but for that to happen there needs to be a mindset change amongst the fans to accept young players will make mistakes(its not be any worse than our experienced players making mistakes). For us to compete regularly in Europe we can’t continue to go into the competition with only 17-21 players in our senior squad because our entire squad is bought in players. We need at least 4 club developed players and a handful of players from other Scottish teams and honestly they need to contribute something more than filling a squad. Finances are probably the biggest issue in all of this; but where we probably need to get to is spending less on transfers for the first team(or at least spend smarter than we have in the past) and spend more on academy talent identification; Benfica for instance have talent ID facilities/training centres in every metro area in Portugal, and spend their first team budget on a handful of experienced players and 18yr olds from abroad to supplement their academy production.

Graeme Homer

We can’t scrap the academy we need it for our uefa licence and we also get ffp credit towards loses for its running costs same as the women’s team. On Rice and the others that have been spoken of in the B team, Clement has already said why they ain’t playing. They’re all good on the ball with their Messi esq runs or Hollywood passes but don’t or won’t do the off the ball work. Then theirs the ego’s far far too many of them think they’re better than they are and fans have built certain players up before they’ve proven themselves, in particular on who failed at a SPFL team. We need to stop expecting world class players every season and more towards good first team and then squad players who we could move on. A Barry Ferguson, Dire Mebude, Billy Gilmour, Rory Wilson will come once in a while and most likely go before we get a chance, we need to be hoping for the likes Patterson, Hughes, Burke, Adam, McGregor.
