I share your comments about Balogun, however what's the point in a B team anymore? If we are re-signing 37 year olds ahead of promoting youth I don't agree with it. Plenty of arguments on both sides, I just have a feeling that this is a signal Goldson, Tav, etc will be in his back 4 starting plans.

Paul

Sentimentality FC. Every season: Jack, Arfield, Davis, McGregor, Balogun. "Loves the club, good guy, just a backup" We could sign a young, promising fourth-choice centre-back. Develop them. Instead, we keep repeating the same mistake - resigning another injury-prone player with no resale value. Wouldn't touch Sima- have a look at his injury history.

Glen Kane

None of our five centre halfs are good enough. Balogan only has a contract because he's a cheap deal.

Richard Baird

We need more people with a media profile to speak out and highlight the blatant incompetence bordering on cheating.

Russ

Agree with the above - would rather develop a young player as cover. I can just about stomach the renewal if he is 4th or 5th choice, but if we get into the Xmas fixture list and Balogun is propping up our defence heads will roll. Hopefully it's a sign Goldson is offski.

Richard

You just know Tav, Goldson & Balogun will be starting the qualifiers!

chris smith

I am increasingly coming round to the view that technology at football should only be used for 3 things. 1/ goaline tech 2/ offside 3/ off the ball foul play meeting the red card threshold where the ref has clearly not seen the incident. The rest should be binned as just being a re-reffing of the game

Craig Armstrong

Balogan seems strange to me. I hope he's there to help a couple (at least) new centre half's to settle in and be there when they're being rested. I just hope it's not a sign of things to come. Ally is ang on but unfortunately he's really the only one who's in a position to make these comments. We ha r almost no support in the media anywhere.

chris smith

Agree. He has committed to re-signing Balogan without knowing whether he can actually get rid of Goldson and/or Davies. Thus there is a significant chance that they will all remain in place for next season

Craig

Can only presume Balogun is staying on because we have a realistic prospect of selling off at least two from Souttar, Goldson and Davies. Personally I'd probably sell the latter two and give Souttar an extra year's contract with a view to selling him on next year.

Craig McWhinnie

In the nicest possible way feeling indifferent about the Balogun rumour, it’s unrealistic to bring in 3 new CB when work badly needs done else where in the squad on the flip side how available is he going to be,are we going to need a back up for the backup and if so is there anyone in youth squad who can step up? I agree with David though, if we are to resign anyone out of contract it should be Leon

Doug

I think having 4 first team CBs is important with two youth players there to sure up that number. None of our youth players are close to performing at the level Balogun has continued to show so I don't think are capable of taking that 4th spot yet. I'd like to see King out of loan this coming season to see if he has what it takes, as he could potentially take that 4th spot in the future.

Doug

We are signing a young CB to develop, that's what Cordoba is. Assuming we're looking to offload Goldson and Davies, we'll likely be buying another as well. That'll provide a balance of two young players and two experienced (Souttar & Balogun). Defence is probably the area more than most where experience is key.

Stephen Strong

What a tremendous Tune. 👏 😎👌🎹🎹🎹

AGS

Get what you mean but the day is coming where every decision will be done by VAR or a version of it; eventually the referee will just be a bouncer keeping players apart

Doug

Young players should be cover for the first team and to me, the first team has 4 CBs. There should then be two youths behind that working on trying to become a first teamer. I don't think any of our youths are good enough yet to be one of the four. I'd like to see King out on loan so he can develop and look to take the position from Balogun the following year.

Doug

I sure hope Tavernier is lining up for the qualifiers, out best outfield player over the season. Scored 50% of our European qualifying goals this season.

Paul

Not for me mate. I understand what you are saying, but we do this every season. Give extensions to players for sentimental reasons. The guy can't play 4 games in a row without injury

Gregg

If King isn’t considered good enough now he needs sold and we move on to developing the next ones.

Graham Jones

Yeah, Brian Clough always said that all great sides were built on back fours, and it’s still true. Balogun makes sense to me, because while you don’t; want to rely on a fourth centre back, sometimes you need to. The modern game requires you to have one these days. So glad Ally has come out and said what he said. I’ve been watching flames this season and then seeing the replays later on TV and thinking I was imagining things at times. I felt that way after the first Old Firm game where we had a good goal disallowed. Celtic players throw themselves and surround the referee every time someone goes down. We don’t.

Graham Roy

Tune! A little underwhelmed by Balogun but can also see the thought process! I do hope in the best possible way that he doesn’t need to play much next season!

Scott Kerr

Sima onloan again yes please as I don't think we can afford him

Jeb

Love big Leon, if he was available 40-50 games a season I would be much more optimistic. The best quality is availability though, we need to improve the consistency of our team selections. Hopefully Cordoba brings that, but this will be a really interesting summer transfer-wise.

Stuart McWilliams

I think Balogun is a sensible move, provided its to be a back up. There's going to be a lot of change in the summer and we might need some settled experienced players in the early months while new players bed in.

Billy McCormack

It's great Ally has came out and said, but we all know it'll be the same next season, and the only way to resolve it is if players start to protest when they hear who will be reffing a game.

Stephen Miller

My favourite song about struggling with an addiction!!!

Ryan Stewart

Absolutely fine with Balogun staying personally. Never going to replace all the CBs this summer so if any of the ones we currently have are to stay Balogun would be top of the list for me. Hoping this means departures for Davies and Goldson. King needs to get out on loan play next season, he’s not ready for us yet and another year of sitting on the bench does nothing for him. Cordoba and another new starting CB with Souttar and Balogun as rotation/backup

stefan strzelecki

Just don’t think we are using the finance correctly by extending Leon’s contract. We need younger , dynamic , players in every area, I just don’t think there is value at this stage in his career . I think in the modern game , it can be overstated the influence of experienced players, on younger colleagues. This is only beneficial with exceptional players. To mind my mind , Leon is good when available , and nothing more. We need to sign better players than we have at present . If players are out of contract , ditch them now please.

Simon

Don’t always get the relevance of the daily song choice but it’s been pretty easy so far this week 😂

Spoon

We no longer develop players and the fans have zero patience with a young CB we had a Portuguese one not long ago with a similar name that was hounded out, we are obsessed with what a player can’t do and not what they can.

Robert White

Balogun is class. 88th minute he was the player grabbing the ball heading to the centre circle. Still 10 mins to go, the rest had their heads down

Spoon

Was more than happy with Dessers hold up at weekend didn’t see the issues that some do, the guy is constantly slated in a front three where he is left isolated and gets aimlessly stuff played up to him. Sima to my mind looked uninterested for the first ten minutes he was on but the main difference was by that stage of the game he was running at their defence from the half way line or just inside their half at a knackered defence which is playing to his strengths. Unfair comparison for me in terms of the two players and the way we played with and to each of them, time to start building teams around guys instead of plugging people in and expecting them to be what they are not. I like Balogoun but I wouldn’t have signed him when we could have used a younger player from B team as back up, if we dont break that cycle we never will. He might well end up Captain at this rate though. Be very interesting to see how many actually get moved on this summer, some will be difficult to find new homes for in terms of wages others I doubt we get much interest in so the new look might not be as new as some hope. What we can change is how we set up and how we look to develop what we have and that has to be the priority, if as the vocal section seem to want we ship out 40+ goals from this team to put our hopes onto Danillo who seems to have become a world beater (to me he is about as natural a finisher as Silva) and he breaks down or doesnt kick on we are in dire straits. Actually becoming bored of Rangers as a club and the fan base hounding out guys who actually score like Colak or Dessers for the next punt. Time to plant a foot and build from a position of at least some stability rather than just keep chasing this fantasy 40 goals a season guy who doesnt exist in our market, our wage bracket or would want to play in our league. Since the start of the SPFL only 3 players have hit more than 30 league goals, two of them didn’t play for us and Boyd got 32 in a the season he played for us and Killie, a good return is low 20’s. In the last decade Morelos managed to top the chart with 18 in the only season he actually played well for us (league wise) out of his time here, 18 yet there was a bandwagon to be dismissive of Colak when he banged 13 in half a season and now Dessers is gash as he doesnt have a 100% strike rate. It’s delusional stuff from the fan base for me and just doesnt equate to what I am watching. A year ago folk were praying for Roofe to rise like Lazarus and claiming he was the ‘best striker at the club’ when we all know you score few from the bench or treatment table. Kent was a the main main turning in 6-8 goals on a good season yet we have people still downplaying Shankland who banged 24 this season and added about another 10 assist to it. Genuinely hope we settle on something and bring out the best in the team with a proper bit of coaching and set up as opposed to chasing a bad streak like a problem gambler. I would be more confident in Dessers getting more next season after bedding in that I would Danillo out scoring him, thats if he properly recovers from injury. I get I may not be in the vocal majority but the amount of opinion stated as fact is annoying, if people think without serious money we get better, and more importantly if people think a guy like Shankland in todays market isn’t a £4m player all day long I just can’t get on board with that. Purely my own opinion.

Greig Wilson

It's about time someone spoke about the standard of Scottish refereeing, especially Nick Walsh. How he gets rewarded with a cup final is beyond me. His booking of Butland at St Mirren away a few weeks ago was nothing short of a disgrace. The booking for Sterling on Saturday for winning the ball is another perfect example as to why he should not be anywhere near the top of the ladder of refereeing in Scotland. He must've been the only person in the stadium to see it as a foul, let alone a bookable offence.

Scott Duncan

Made me smile David quoting Souness almost word for word from the 86-87 "That Championship Season". Must have watched it as many times as I have!

Heart and Hand

I honestly don’t know what you’re seeing with Dessers. His hold up play is really poor, he can’t hold off defenders, he’s too slow to press effectively. He does his best and he can occasionally finish really well but we aren’t going where we need to go with him as a 9. Go watch Shankland’s hold-up play by comparison.

Rose Mcloughlin

Thanks for a season of great pods david..enjoy your break..

Fraser Black

The one I still can’t get over that kind of got missed due to how the game ended, was the Dessers goal chopped off at Ibrox in the 3-3 game. I have never seen VAR intervene for a foul that happened at the other end of the pitch in the build up to a goal. There was another couple of phases of play after that. There was something similar in an Arsenal game a few weeks later, and was deemed to not be relevant in the eventual outcome to the goal. All they should be looking at is to see if there was any reason not to allow the goal to stand within that phase of play, not to go back & re-referee for an incident that happened at the other end. For me, that was the one that was beyond farce & should have been highlighted in greater detail.

Spoon

I would say exactly the same to his detractors, I dont think his hold up is poor at all and I think it’s improvied significantly as his fitness improved. I think he can hold off defenders and the idea he can occasionally finish well is compared to what ? Guys from the EPL who cost 20 times more than him ? Not many are finishing better than him in our league. The guys in the SPFL or in our market arent going to give what people seem to expect from them, they dont in this very league, the other side of the cities strikers arent miles better than him and they are complained about by their own fans. I have watched Shanklands hold up he’s a different style of striker and my point is I would compliment Dessers with a guy like him not empty the guy who is actually contributing. Half our fan base will with glee tell you Shankland isnt worth £4m and is a flawed striker where I would have the guy in a heartbeat, Colak was similar slated. I dont think the support have realistic expectations at all any more and I dont get the relish to play Dessers down at all. I dont believe people are willing to look beyond their already established view of Dessers, I dont believe the standards he is held to are fair or honest and I absolutely dont believe that the striker people think is out that in our market will exceed what he has brought this season. You dont and thats fine but it’s not the indisputable fact that is made out. The biggest issue for me is the insistence in this league of playing one guy up with wingers into set defences with huge guys who enjoy that type of defending, put a more nimble striker next to him in a pair and I think it works miles better. Respect your view David but dont agree with it, quite often dont agree with huge sections of the support on players both in terms of them being slated or lauded in equal measure, I think online there is a real desire to be on the bandwagon with some views from fans but this is just one I dont agree with. I like hard workers and grafters who are no frills no nonsense, it’s a view and nothing else.

Martin Davies

Dessers plays like the injured guy you instruct to stand upfront because you've used all yoir subs. He was a man down at the weekend.

Heart and Hand

We all decide we rate/don’t rate a player and confirmation bias kicks in. I think if you’re happy with Dessers hold-up, pressing or reliability in front of goal, that’s great. But it simply isn’t good enough for a team who aim to be champions. Celtic have far better forwards than us and didn’t spend 40/50m to get them.

Allan Osborne

More than 72 hours after the cup final and still the club has said nothing about what went down. It's no wonder they take us as an easy touch, we're a shambles when it comes to driving the narrative. If what happened to us on Saturday had happened to them you can bet we'd be on day 3 of a meltdown. At least we have Ally McCoist to say it like it is because the club seems to not be interested.

Spoon

That’s your opinion. I said the same when people banged on about what Colak ‘couldn’t do’ according to them, I didn’t agree with it. I wanted him supported by the the team set up to maximise his output. With Dessers instead of moving him on and starting the experiment again or putting all our eggs in the recently injured Danillo basket I would rather have a guy who for most of his career delivers 15 - 20 goals partnered with others who can compliment him and chip in. The search for a moby dick striker with our budget and scouting hasn’t worked for about 20 years. Why are we thinking we get a guy next season who bangs in more than we have had from Dessers unless we pay for a guy like Shankland, again another guy the support seem desperate to find faults with. Dessers isn’t the problem for me, I think it’s fair to say if your impression is I am biased wouldn’t it be fair to say so are you the other way, unable to see that he is a decent player who has value and contributes rather than the joke many suggest. Is he enough on his own or in this set up possibly not but I would bank what he brings a try and get even more from him knowing what we have rather than start the experiment and roll the dice again on the off chance the next punt pays off. Play the percentage shot, build on a base would be my preference not start each season with a new front man.

Spoon

Totally disagree and that kind of rhetoric just isn’t borne out by his contributions. Again you might not like him but a man down? Worked the front line mostly alone, took the ball in at times, challenged for headers and had very little service or support is what I saw.

Heart and Hand

I think you like a certain type of forward who doesn’t work in 433. Maybe in a two it would work better but if we’re playing the front 3 the middle needs to be a pivot and he isn’t. Currently Hearts and Aberdeen have a better no 9 than us and that needs to change.

Spoon

Problem is we don’t develop guys now bud, it them in see if they fit, too many don’t then they are shuffled out or stuck on bench to fester. We haven’t properly invested in youth at any point over the last 50 years I have watched us. Always more interested in. Using a ready made than brining a guy on, any development we have done bar Paterson has been to an import. The young talent we bought from academies recently to never see any return e.g Lovelace is criminal. If we don’t actually play them we won’t ever change. It sure the fan base can handle a development player now anyway we have become desperados

Spoon

I like forwards who work and score and I am willing to cut a guy who grafts some slack. I hear what you’re saying but he’s just not the main problem for me, who’s around him and how we seem to be wedded to playing is. To obsess on wingers in a league where the teams are set up to deliberately combat balls in from wide seems short sighted and it’s time to change for me. I get 442 isn’t popular in world football but what we play week in week out domestically it would at least be a change up. Would I rather have Shankland as the main guy yes. Would I be happy with Dessers as a back up or playing the last 20, or even better coming on to add to an attack absolutely. The bit I just won’t accept is the comments like he’s useless or a man short etc he just isn’t he’s not everyone ideal or cup of tea, no issue with that. To demean the guy or suggest his return isn’t decent in a team devoid of creativity to me is just isn’t fair. I’m not saying you are demanding him bud but others seem desperate to. Without his goals in some games we wouldn’t have been in the race as long as we were and I don’t buy all the ‘ah but the goals he scored weren’t important’ rubbish. You don’t rate him I think. He’s done fine, don’t think either of us will convince the other to budge! And that’s ok!!

Colin Wieland

Imo we need 4 centre halves but never going to happen in one go, so can understand Balogun. We do need to sign 2 starting ones. Soutter is a bombscare and is never far away from a calamity.

Heart and Hand

I do like him as he's a cracking bloke, a worker and has a great attitude and I don't say that for many of them. I just think we need someone with a different skill set. And 442 is the best formation ever. That's just a fact :-)

Spoon

That’s more than fair David I just think there’s a pile on him sometimes, not saying your part of it, that ignores he is a net contributor where many others aren’t. Could he better, absolutely no argument but I’m not sure some of the expectation on the guy or indeed what we put on modern era strikers is realistic. The days of McCoist and his ilk sadly are long gone. We, football and our market position just aren’t at that level any more except for the real elite clubs, the goals must be spread more and having a guy who routinely bags 15 - 20 a season on board cannot be a bad thing. I’m not blind to Dessers faults but I think sometimes they are over played and his assets undervalued.

Heart and Hand

In an ideal world he’d do fine as an option but given we could very reasonably ask for our £4m back on him (would be more bar age) I think we can invest that better. The afore-mentioned Shankland for one. But there definitely is unfair criticism of him compared to others. At least he shows up for work.

Tommy

Are we not being optimistic that Goldson will be sold, conscious he’s got an injury that’ll keep him off the training ground well into pre-season? This is a potential barrier

Heart and Hand

The thing about Goldson is, the type of guy he is, he won’t sit on a bench IMO. If he’s not going to be 1st choice I don’t see him hanging about.

Gary Brown

Thanks for the update David. Don't remember any standout bombscare moments from Big Leon. He gets and appreciates the club, already demonstrated his leadership with young players and in particular young black players Bassey, Aribo, Kamara, and recently Diomande. Lads who face (and endure) aspects of the game not every player, no matter how experienced, can help them with. Squad is being revitalised with much younger men but still need a few older, wiser and more seasoned pros to guide them, even if only from the sidelines, training pitch or dressing room. Balogun always comes across enthusiastic and completely honestly in interviews. I find Tav squirms and is uncomfortable, Goldson seems contemptuous and considers it a chore. Only one of the three's attitudes displays good leadership and motivational qualities. See Dessers getting it tight again in the comments. Put someone better than Cantwell in there and he's not so isolated. Give him better service than Tav, Lundstrum & Borna provide and he should do better too. His hold up and link up play has been fine, often really good, since Nov. While bearing the load as the only fit striker too. Early in the season when subject to proper abuse there were times Lundstrum and Tav were literally playing him 'hospital' passes to drop him in the shit and shift blame from themselves when nothing much was on. But hey, keep kissing that picture of Morelos content that his career average of 13 league goals a season is far better! This rebuild will take more than one window to fix and right now from goal return, work rate and overall contribution to the team Dessers is way down the list of problems to fix.

Christopher Mcconnell

Leon is the perfect guy to have around when we could be trying to settle a lot of foreigners in a short space of time. I think this is a wise move tor us.

Craig

How many goals have been ruled out for clubs over the season? If we have had 5 against one club, what are the total figures? We must have the most ruled out over the season.

Alex Hood

That’s why they call him Super.

Scott

Can the club take Ally on as an ambassador or use his presence in the media to start pushing our agenda? I know he speaks his mind on talksport, but we should use him the way the dark side uses Sutton.

Spoon

I fear the notion of uncovering a cheap hot prospect from somewhere who breaks in and bangs 40 in his debut season Champ Manager style has ruined folks perspective. I would love to see Shankland in as the main man, I absolutely think he is worth the money and is as low risk as you get in a transfer knowing the league, the opponents, the expectations and he has the track record but you hear many fans making out he is also a limited striker who isn’t worth £4m and they proceed to play down his ability. I said it with Colak, I defend Dessers for it and I think if we don’t get Shankland this year its a dereliction of duty from the board, you can’t teach goal scoring and you can’t ever under estimate how hard it is to get numbers. Teams for me should be built around the forwards and getting goals the other stuff is the platform for that. Recent history shows that anyone getting 20+ is hard to get and expensive. My fear is we chuck Dessers out assuming we will get better, Danillo breaks down and the new guy isn’t up to it and we chucked away 20 goals that we don’t replace. This is not a prolific team, I campaigned to keep Colak last year on the same ticket. If it was easy to get the type of guy we want why haven’t we or another club in Scotland managed it semi regularly. Bar guys like Shankland there is nobody close to Dessers in the league and in raw stats Dessers out performs Shankland (or did until recently) he just seems to trigger folk as they don’t like how he runs or that every touch isn’t perfect. I do get the frustration but just not the venom or debasing of him as a decent mid level striker….and sadly we are a decent mid level team at best. It’s no coincidence Lammers is doing ok in a set up and league that suits him, fair enough we can’t change this league but recently to me we have had far too many managers obsessed with their vision but blind to the tools they have to deliver it. Enjoyed the chat, appreciate your point and position which is fair but the broader take on Dessers irks me, he’s not the dud that made out or at least for me half as limited a some folk portray. I would take Shankland for next season over anyone else that we could dig up abroad, time to shop local and time to go with percentage plays not long odds accumulators where everything needs to align or the wheels come off!
