Can we bring in a new captain and still have Tavernier in the team/squad? He’s in the HoF and it would be quite a statement to take captaincy off of him yet he stays on? What’s your thoughts?

Scott

Great round table guys, well done 👏

Simon H&H

Cheers lads, few sound issues that I tried my best to iron out like a mad man this morning. Turned out well I felt

Bailed out when I heard the guy who hates Wright and Matondo claiming Lundstrum should possibly have got a new deal and we can take in a rehabilitation project or two. Lundstrum has been gash bar half a dozen games and one memorable goal. Would like to see a guy like Candeias are held in regard because I. Our current team he would be miles better than be was playing alongside dross, always amazed how people can deify bang average players like Morelos, Kent, Lundstrum etc forgetting vast swathes of seasons they were liabilities and slate the raw graft of guys like Candeias. Time to bin the experiments, the perma injured, the exotic imports and the Chanp Mamaber signings for me, but local, buy ambitious and buy proven 50 game a season guys who have the appetite and physicality to play the type of season we need them to. We have tried different markets and being a rehoming centre for prima Donna EPL big standard players with more instagram followers than skills, just for a laugh I want us to go back to scooping up local talent and focusing on the team ethic and attitude instead of long shots and high risk buys. A hefty dose of reality need around what market we are in and what we need, there’s still folk talking down players for ‘being ok domestically but not good enough for Europe’ as we missed out on a dozen titles and more cups.

Nice way to start the holiday listening to this with a refreshment. Great show and some good points made

Beale was thrown into the recruitment job when he wasn’t suited to it. He admitted as much, but was big enough to take it on when that is a practice clubs did away with about twenty years ago or more. The players he brought in weren’t;t all bad players, but some were the worn players for his style of play. They never fitted how he set the tram up, and he tried to make them fit. Recruit for how you want to play and you want go too far wrong. What we need this summer is a string central defender because there’s a gaping hole there. There is a need for a leader in the defence outwith the keeper. We do have to be careful to make sure there are enough experienced players, because there will be periods when younger players need to learn on players who have been through it before, and we need them in different areas of the pitch. I think Koppen is a god fit for what we need to build here, because he has a wider network than Wilson did, and he’s able to pivot onto other targets when one falls through the net. One thing he does need to be aware of is the fact we will get used in the market to drive interest, so he has to be good at playing his hand well. We’re a magnet for Championship sides to follow, because they do have more income for wages, even though most of them ate heavily in debt. I think players have a better chance of EPL playing for us.

Lundstram was arguably the best player in the league until the injuries piled up. Not saying he’s the answer, but my general point is I need the recruitment to earn my trust, so I’m not waving him out the door like others. In terms of rehabs, Butland was a rehab, I’m guessing we shouldn’t have signed him? I’m sure plenty would tune off if you came on to make that point. I liked Candeias but he was part of a squad with hard-working players, with a Scottish core & guess what happened? We won fuck all. Under Gerrard, we drew so often, he knew we needed more (match winners). I’m not disregarding the Scottish market, nor the English or the ‘rehab’ market (except injured players). I’m saying the recruitment should be diverse spread our bets. As for Wright & Matondo, Lundstram has had more good games this year, than they 2 have had their whole careers, they’re the pish that have to go 1st, the non-contributors/liabilities.

We can worry about bleeding in young players once we start winning consecutive league titles.

James McSween

Big shout out to Ryan ! Great balanced views and should definitely be on more pods going forward.

Delgers

Need to move Tav on. Personally think he's done for what we require. But even just symbolism for the end of this group of players

Gregg

The management team didn’t think candeas was good enough - end product wise. Suspect they were right

Lundstrum arguable the best player in the league? Couldn’t disagree more a guy who played at decent level for a handful of games and otherwise was bang average stage to my own mind. Slow, negative and utterly unimposing in the majority of games, he hid in the backline and contributed very little. I don’t rate him at all, personally opinion nothing more but the biggest dysfunctional element of the team for some years has been midfield control and chance creation and he offered very very little over his years. A flat track bully able to no look pass against the bottom of the league and put in a nights work in Europe when he wanted to but anonymous and slowing the team down for 95% of his time. Butland isn’t a rehab, he was a reserve goalkeeper wanting to be a number 1. He wasn’t broken, injured or had lost his way he wanted to play not even close to the likes of Cantwell, Ramsey, Roofe or others who have come and and shown exactly why their careers stall. Butland also isn’t as good as the bandwagon makes out, he is miles better than the standard of the rest of the team but given his pedigree and him taking a step down to be here you would expect that. Matondo is a decent young player who as a winger is inconsistent but he has had about the same level of contribution as Lundstum managed in many more. Gerrard who bought the guy preferred Jack when fit, think that speaks volumes. Matondos issue is he hasn’t had the run of game or been available but he is clearly the same profile as Cortes, young, raw and promising what we should be doing is developing and coaching him as opposed to writing him off. Scott Wright is just a classic Scottish whipping boy. A limited squad player who people focus on, with little he can do to change opinion on him as minds are already made up. A modern day Scot Wilson, the venom for the boy is as bad as some have for Tav and equally hard to justify. He’s ok, works hard but ultimately isn’t near good enough but the rhetoric around him would have you believe he’s single handedly responsible for the season collapse at times. Suspect a lot of folk might still be raging at him next season as he probably won’t move on unless Killie or similar come in for him. The hatred for the guy is OTT in my opinion and I switch off when I hear it, which I’m am sure many others do when they see me post and just don’t read anything I write. Candeias had all the attributes to be better with better players around him. If we had a guy with his talent currently we would be lapping it up, since then we have guys who as wingers didn’t contribute as much either forward or back and quite frankly he’s the type of player I like, a worker with a proper engine. Since then we have had guys who cost far more and delivered less while playing in ‘better’ teams, all ifs and buts however peak Candeias would have been more use to use than most guys we have tried since to my mind. Can’t think of many wingers that have come in since we came back up that have really delivered in terms of numbers or output, the perennial defenders of guys like Kent ignore his utter lack of any end product, he hasn’t gone onto better things, will be fascinating to see where he ends up having been on nobody’s radar down south and now being released, he wasn’t good enough for the management team when he left, suspect they were right.

Angus Mackay

Really good listen guys, thanks. I agree whole heartedly with Ryan about Bisgrove. He inherited a mess and sorted it out in an orderly an effective manner. A big loss I think.

Gregg

Butland had went from being in the England squad/ side to being really poor in the championship to then being second/ third choice for palace. His career had fallen off a cliff - he has turned it around now thankfully. I liked candieas to be honest - and him choosing to go to play regularly speaks volumes for him. But it was more endeavour > ability than endeared him

Spoon

If that’s your view that’s cool not mine, don’t see playing for Man Utd even as a back up or Crystal Palace as falling off a cliff, wouldn’t mind those wages for failure. There’s a huge difference from taking an outfield player who has sat on a bench for years or been injured every season to grabbing a decent goalkeeper who just isn’t the best at the club and giving him a starting slot. I take it by the same rationale McCrorie and McLaughlin have fallen off a cliff ? Not for me they just have been kept out by better. Agree to disagree as I’m not sure apples are being compared to apples, goal keepers and outfield players don’t equate when it comes to opportunity for me. We will have no idea how Candeias might have kicked on in a better set up or with better around him but I liked him and felt he was let go too soon. Gerrard delivered a title but not every signing was good or player released was automatically the right move. We had Flanagan in the team after all…..

Gregg

I don’t think McLaughlin recovered - in the eyes of the support or management after that drubbing at parkhead. The fact neither could oust McGregor when he was in serious decline is perhaps telling - I don’t think either were at the top of the cliff to fall off tbf 😘

Spoon

Our perception of them vs other teams may well be very different our fans love to hate a player, not sure any more that some in the support actually know where we are in the grand football food chain. European success has covered a multitude of issues for a few seasons.

Spoon

Point is bud they weren’t broken they just weren’t perceived to be as good as someone else, that’s where Butland was, he had peaked in terms of England having a look at him but he didn’t then have a meltdown or fall out at a team and get benched, they just had better. Same for our keepers, Cantwell for example moved on as he fell out with the manager / club.
