David Campbell

Can't wait for the season to end troops roll on may 😂😂😂 seriously tho sat down to watch with a bit of excitement new season new dreams and all that. Then remembered bar one or two it's the core starting 11 that failed last year. Then you throw in a injury and it's like we've never been away.

Glyn Davies

The more things change the more things stay the same......

Russ

I thought there was a fair bit of needle in that game, especially for a friendly. I think I've come to the conclusion that the manager needs first team signings - if he goes into the season with Goldson/Davies/Souttar/Balogun as his CB's then the blokes on a hiding to nothing, he won't see November and it won't really be his fault.

Scott Tolmie

I’ll start the season how I ended last season, diomande, sorry not for me

Colin Campbell

Won’t win fuck all with this board !! Time for change, needs massive investment!! 🔴⚪️🔵

Mr J K Murray

be another manager elected and another rebuild, like non league football la,SG at least bought a defense & midfiield of a sort,

Graeme Burns

Completely underwhelmed so far - stadium debacle has really upset me - and am trying to focus on other things and not RFC until August - still watched RTV though, too old to not die hard. It’s a curse, it’s a blessing, the highest highs and lowest lows. Here we go again. Please Rangers - dae sumhin’ gid

Ronald Fraser

There’s an issue with formation Dessers v 4 Ajax defenders just won’t work. He was on a hiding to nothing

Brian Rae

Poor pitch and Referee, playing against an overly aggressive opponent. You could easily mistake that for an SPFL away game. Until last summer, I never judged pre season friendlies as anything more than preparation for the season ahead but the Beale shit show of last year changed my mind as you could see the inevitable car crash a mile off and unfortunately, I'm getting that same feeling with more or less all of the same players that finished last season still here. It must be said that Ajax are further into their pre season and it showed but what is clear is that we cannot go into this season with Goldson as our main CB, it just can't happen. He's done. It's now vital that new 1st team ready players are brought in ASAP, IMO, minimum of 6 is needed. Anything less and we'll probably be looking for another new manager with an apoplectic fanbase that's had enough. I've seen it mentioned a lot that Koppen "needs to get rid of players" but isn't he just responsible for scouting and recruitment? Can you clarify if that's the case, David?

Scott Tolmie

I genuinely don’t know what he contributes, Barron done more in 5 minutes, a massive season for diomande as there’s plenty on the fence

Russ

Surprising that, he's the only midfielder we have who will be proactive and look to turn and play forward under pressure imo.

Jim Milne

Off topic, but I see Kamara is leaving Leeds for €10m. Do we have a sell on clause?

Ryan Stewart

Pretty standard pre season match. Never learned anything we didn’t already know. Positives were the new players and the youngsters who came on but on the whole the squad is still well short of where we need to be. Tynecastle in 3 weeks then into European qualifiers, a LOT of work to be done on this squad

Alan Weir

Is this the same Rangers v Ajax game covered on the FF match thread? On there, just about everyone and everything was shite, and we will be handing over the title to Celtic in the morning. Thanks for a rather more nuanced, and frankly interesting, coverage. I’ll predict a good Lowry season - I think he has something that could really improve and, ultimately, change games.

Alan Weir

The sadness is if he doesn’t get off to a flying (and probably unrealistic) start to the season we’ll have the usual “bad attitude”, “bad haircut” mob wanting him chased from the club. I think our struggle in the transfer market underlines the need to nurture our own youngsters, and that means giving them more than a dozen games or so.

Scott Tolmie

See in the first 15 minutes he never touched the ball once, I thought last season he was extremely poor and this season would be massive for him, needs to improve big time, I think he’s another dessers, some like him and some don’t, for me he contributes nothing going forward and the same defensively , I really hope he turns it around,

Gregg

Need some rich foreign man to come in, circumvent FFP and pay for our hobby. If that’s what our aspiration is - no wonder every fucker seems in a perma rage

Doug Young

I only saw second half, but thought it was a decent turnout against very high quality opponents. Need a couple of first-teamers, yes. Impressed with Barron and Lowry.

David

Great to have post match pods back. Cheers Alan and Davie.

Leslie White

We still look like a team of defenders and midfielders, we just look sadly lacking with real attacking forwards. The highlights to me was Liam Kelly and the youngsters with Lowrie in particular.

Gregg

Sounds like you’ve made up your mind, you’re on the kid after first kick about and giving it I told you so. Just how it sounds

Paul

For me he has it all to prove. Neat and tidy on the ball but we need so much more. He's been okay but nothing spectacular. The middle of the park is crying out for creativity.

Spoon

As he was a lot of last season, mind boggles why we persist with a single striker as opposed to getting support around him.

Spoon

He had the opportunity to stake a claim with hearts and did very little, the way to change peoples opinion is by cutting the nonsense and focusing on doing it on the field, as one of those covered by the ‘bad attitude, bad haircut brigade’ label to me he is a junior Cantwell, bags of talent but too easily distracted with nonsense. He’s no longer a kid, he had a platform but didn’t seem to take it, if he was that good he would have been in the hearts team more in my mind.

Alan Weir

Fair enough. However, Lowry has had 9 appearances for Rangers and 12 for Hearts. Maybe, as you suggest, that tells its own story that he isn’t good enough. Perhaps though it could be a player who just needs a bit more time - 20 games is nothing in a football career - to get the right support and to be cut a bit more slack over traumatic personal issues. In our current situation, I’m not convinced we can let go of a 21 year old with “bags of talent”. We shall see.

Spoon

Usual early season game nothing to get excited about nothing to get too down about in terms of who played or how they did in my own view. Not concerned by the signings so far but where I do have concerns is in the timeframe we have to get a cohesive team on the park ready for the season starting. The early euro games can be a platform that builds confidence or a morale sapping short lived adventure, add in the stadium issues and the general air of desperation in some quarters and it doesn’t feel like we have a long time to get the bodies in and get them to gel or evolve from last year. There is every chance we go on and buy some decent players, I firmly believe Clement can get the best from a group of players and set us up properly if he gets the personnel. The question is will he get who he needs in time, will they be fit and ‘conditioned’ to the level he needs to contribute and last the season. The jury is probably out at the moment, one thing is for sure the urgency is led by the club and the football management team as this has been something they have used as a mitigating factor when managers have changed or signings from one regime haven’t been in favour by the next. If there is no rush this year, if the manager is content with the pace of signings and the timing then great he just has to clarify that and the sting is taken out of things. I am certainly not on a downer from the game but I am certainly not excited by the set up, same tactics as last year, same faces (same mistakes from some) and I think its reasonable to have hoped there might have been something different in how we went after the game. Still doesn’t look enough craft middle to front, not just in terms of individuals but in terms of patterns of play or what we are trying to do to work a defence. Time is on our side but its ticking away to make some real progress this season, lets hope we don’t just go for more of the same as that just wont work.

Gregg

The kid also lost a parent - hope he can kick on. Bags of ability

chris smith

I really, really dont want to see half of these players ever again

Gary Shaw

The boys a player and it’s mind blowing the people that don’t see it….if he had made the same amount of appearances as a Cantwell or Lawrence,I guarantee his numbers and impact would be better….as for the attitude thing that always gets thrown up.,absolute bullshit….Look no further than Cantwell if anyone wants to point fingers about players’ attitudes

Alan Weir

It’ll never happen, but some fans need to take reality check on where we are as a club. Without a successful youth system and a hell of a lot more patience with the youngsters we are doomed. “Not good enough” after less than a season is a recipe for repeated failure.

C. J

I’ll probably opt out of watching us this season if we can’t move most of the squad on. This isn’t Rangers. The majority of these players are not Rangers. They’re heartless, gutless mercenaries.

Spoon

Fair comment Alan, I just think if he was as good as the hype he would feature, perhaps more challenging at us but surely at hearts he could have broken in and made an impact ? The modern game requires laser focus at the elite level, there are lots of guys with talent, technical skills and physicality it’s the attitude to harness it all and deliver that separates the top guys from also fans. I think we need to be less sentimental and tolerant of guys who aren’t putting the graft in and more ruthless in cutting them loose. I do agree though that if we are going to invest in a younger player then they will need time to develop and build up, for their part they need to be all in.

Gary Shaw

Get him in and let him flourish…..100% wouldn’t be worse than the big money players ie Raskin,Cantwell or Lawrence …technically,he’s better than the 3 of them…get him floating around the number 10 position and let him make mistakes….by god ,we’ve wasted years, time and money on the aforementioned and also dumplings like Hagi…Lowry technically better than all of them….we’ve failed time and again with the dross we keep hanging our hats on.

Alan Weir

I agree with a lot of what you say, Gary, but I just can’t see sections of our support tolerating “mistakes”, particularly when it leads to lost points. I think our current financial situation means we need to give the youngsters their heads, and that does mean a season, not twenty minutes here and there or cup games against the lower league teams. Lowry has been over-hyped, but that doesn’t stop him playing an important part over the next few seasons.

Robert White

I agree. But our support is fairly split on whether Rangers should have an identity and seem happy with us paying millions for bang average from anywhere whilst our youngsters and the best Scots go elsewhere.

Gary Shaw

Well the players I mention Alan, make them time and time again and it seems to be tolerated….As I keep alluding to,Lowry isn’t going to do anything monumentally worse than the dross that play in his position….When can we honestly say that we’ve watched these guys and thought “wow, what a performance “?

Alan Weir

Pretty much in agreement, Gary. The obvious thing to add is that Lowry has far more potential for improvement compared to those you mention. I have a feeling we will start the season with far more of last season’s team than is desirable. We can only hope we come together as a team and Celtic deteriorate, a long-shot I fear.

Gary Shaw

I agree,Alan….The only slight and I mean paper thin hope that I have is that Celtic aren’t great and in Scotland it’s a bit of a glass ceiling in terms of who they can buy…..A perfect example of this is if you look at Celtics transfers over the past 3 seasons then we could have afforded most if not all the same players….thats on the recruitment guys

Gary Shaw

Cifuentes,Dessers and Lammers cost the same as Abada,Kyogo and O’Reilly and I would hazard a guess that we’re probably paying more on wages…..when you look at what they’ve got for them compared to what we got for ours,it’s alarming.

Spoon

Get the passion for young Scottish guys Gary it not sure there is any real evidence he’s technically better than Raskin (just as an example) two different styles of players and while I agree to the general aspiration of playing our own guys we need to be carful not to pretend that they are better than they are. I still can’t get away from the fact a lot like Cantwell there’s a history of Lowry not showing or doing enough to have several managers put him in regularly. We need to stop falling into the trap that players in their early 20s are kids or for the future when other teams are using them in the now, we see it with Lennon Miller for instance. If you are good enough, if you have the talent and mentality but most importantly if you have the right attitude a manager will put you in. In a period we have been searching for a functional midfield I struggle to accept that if he was the answer, even if that needed a season to develop, then the manager wouldn’t have had him in the team. I think we would all love a team of young homegrown players smashing the league but if we had the players to do it I would hope we would have used them before now. Big season for Lowry, I can have my mind changed on him but I have to see him doing it regularly on the park and looking like he takes it seriously. I can live with mistakes, can’t live with what at times has seemed an immaturity from him. The concept is sound and it’s the perfect solution to where we are just not sure he’s as good as is made out, definitely haven’t seen it so far.

Gary Shaw

I know he’s a different position from Raskin but if you’re not sure if he’s better technically than Raskin then I’m sorry,I can’t help you.

Gary Shaw

And I’m not passionate for young Scottish players,I’m passionate for good footballers….if a foreigner is better than our Scottish boys then play him and vice versa

Gary Shaw

What about the immaturity from Cantwell or the constant bad decision making from him,Lawrence,Hagi etc?….Interested to be reminded when Lowry showed an immaturity when playing for the first team.

Spoon

Not sure your subjective opinion really makes it empirically true he’s technically better, to be quite honest technical ability without the other elements required to be a pro is irrelevant. Based on seeing a guy half a dozen times I wouldn’t say he is better than Raskin, and I don’t even think Raskin is that good.

Martin Sutherland

Probably a hangover from the end of the season but all Butland’s credit, for me, went when he set up that Celtic winner. Anyone staying on this year has work to do to convince me they are up being winners with us.
