Hope some fans stop agrandising Dave King as a viable option it appears his ego being hurt has cost rangers millions of pounds in litigation and court and lawyer fees.

Miguel Sanchez

Also Jon Moss is the Willie Collum of England I'll wait to be proven wrong but the guys a clown

It’s a damming indicavtive that our youth system needs a overhaul there is not enough players coming through the pathway to first team which means we haven’t the right coaches in place and coaching to the managers coaching philosophy then players can make the transition into first team faster we want all the best young players in Scotland to be at our academy

David Innes

As far as I can see all the youth set up is achieving at the moment is producing a steady stream of players for jobber sides in the Scottish lower leagues

adam

Hard to coach young players to the managers style when there's a new manager every year !

Sandy

Thought Alex Lowry might have been a real star for us, disappointed

Leslie White

Ah yes, just what we need another blooming Mid Fielder, to feed passes to imaginable wingers, and forwards, DOH!

C. J

The idea of a youth academy is massively overrated by the way. Most youth systems poach elite players at a moderately young age like Benfica etc, they very rarely bring these players up from early ages. No youth academy in the world regularly churns out truly homegrown, national team level players outside of the absolutely elite clubs like Barcelona, Real, Dortmund, Stuttgart & arguably Arsenal or Real Sociedad at times. Most of those players are bought at 14 or 15.

Graham Jones

Lowry has been unlucky, because he was progressing under Gio, Beale didn’t want him and then he returned from hearts injured. It’s heartbreaking for the boy, especially after having lost his mother, and maybe the club needs to take that into consideration. He’s still a young man and he’s going to be feeling that for a while. His career has been disrupted mostly by changing managers when you look at it, and we’ve seen that several times at Rangers.

Spoon

Lowry one of the most over hyped guys of recent years, never been impressed by him on or off the field from the limited stuff I have seen. The romanticising of players isn’t helpful, this is a brutal business and nobody is owed. Wider issue is given the shambles that is youth / reserve football what is the function of the academy and is there really any point to it. Unless we commit to developing players the guys in our academy are going to constantly be viewed as ‘kids’ while we import foreign guys at the same age then play them.

David Campbell

I don't see the point in castledine if it's not for purchase next summer the only club it benefits it's Chelsea

Stewart Campbell

Lowry was one of the highest paid players at hearts so can’t see him going to a team up here unless we pay him off

Colin Carstairs

Re the Elite :Please employ a professional PR company to advise us on how to control any negativity to allow us to get ahead of any as we are well aware of how it operates up here in Scotland with our esteemed Smsm…

Ian Rutherford

Disappointed Lowry couldn't kick on boy's got talent Another great tune David 👌

Craig

Are the stories about Lowry's attitude something that people keep hearing persistently, or is it just something that someone said once that's been passed round the houses online for the last 3 years?

Andy sawers

What's the craic with lovelace?

Heart and Hand

Radical solution: scrap the academy (it costs 3m a year), use that money to buy the top young talent in the league each year. Loan them back to their clubs for a year. (It won’t happen but it’s an idea 😀)

Graeme McLeod

He also lost his mum during that period - and his & his girlfriend's dog burned to death in a fire while they were on holiday - which is difficult to deal with. Doing so while your boss is gossiping to the media about you makes it even more difficult. He might not have panned out under Gio, but having a manager who actually believed in him and wanted to develop him would have helped.

Graeme McLeod

Why buy the top young talent in the league when we can buy Africans and South Americans from leagues even worse than ours though? Pesky UEFA rules are the only thing forcing Rangers to have any domestic talent at this point.

Graeme McLeod

It's something that seemed to start a few months after Beale returned. Not so coincidentally around the time his mum was dying.

Scott Watson

Is there a possibility that the needle we need to thread - players who look potentially good enough to play for us but not so good that they'll be poached by the EPL before they can play a full season - is now so narrow that it's a fool's errand?

Spoon

Blows my mind the academy chat from club, it’s either a proper path or a waste of energy and money. Your spot on bud, and being more radical in our thinking is what’s required, why pretend we really give local youth a chance. The number of times we have swooped for “top talent” only to see them rot on the vine in the academy must make anyone think twice about joining us.

KennyY

Having lost my mum 3 weeks ago I have a huge amount of sympathy for Alex Lowry. A big part of you dies too when a parent ,who was a huge influence on your life, passes away. It’s not easy just to pick up the pieces. I wish him peace to allow him to have a good career in his next move.

Heart and Hand

Oh right. In that case, yes he is training with first team but hasn’t been selected for Matchday squads so far. 👍

Davie Brand

I really hope Alex moves on David and it comes to pass where we are saying "why the &£!? did we let him go" because he will have properly made it. Good luck Alex. 👏🇬🇧🟥⬜🟦

Alan Stewart

Tune 👍🏻 Already fearing what shite Colin will serve up tomorrow.

Spoon

Scott for me it’s a lack of vision, we should be using the loan system far better. We need to stop seeing loaning out players as the death knell for younger guys and more about it getting them game time, matches in the legs and battle ready. If our trading model was even to buy and loan back we could build up players and relationships with other teams. I get we are all sore about how we were treated in the past but, we can’t get back to being the most influential club in Scotland by keeping all the other teams are arms length. Buy guys with talent and own them back if needed to secure them, see it as investment and a bit of medium term thinking.

Heart and Hand

Like I say, it won’t happen but say we bought Lennon Miller this year. Get him on a slightly reduced fee because we offer him back to them for a year. He gets another 35-40 matches under his belt. Arrives at Rangers with 100 PL appearances and even though he’d only be 19 would be a first-team player immediately, none of this ‘bring him through’ stuff. Get Watson from Killie too, same deal.

Heart and Hand

Then next year you do the same with whoever has shown up well. Would it give us more or less first team talent in 5 years from that 15m spend than the academy?

Spoon

100% agree. Barron illustrates the difference in worth by having played top level (in Scotland) vs one of our academy starlets. The competitive, senior game time you get 16-20 is incredibly worthwhile and we need to get past the “kid” label sticking into their early 20s. They won’t be perfect at that age but if they have the talent and attitude then the injection of enthusiasm they can bring is infectious. I never buy into the fan chat about taking a young hungry player from a team who gives them game time and then expecting them to be happy as a bit part for us, back up or bench warming. You want guys who back themselves and want to play. I love how Barron came in staked a claim and now looks a key component, Dio is in same boat. They would benefit from Maclean or similar I think but their energy, dig and talent shines in a squad where so many are just ordinary. Thats my type of player whether it’s back, middle or front. A guy maximising whatever talent they have with the attitude and effort. I don’t mind a guy who isn’t the best technically or the fastest etc but they absolutely give it their all and squeeze every ounce out of what they have with determination. It’s why the guys with natural talent who don’t put the work in or have the attitude annoy me more! We can only live in hope.

Heart and Hand

For a young guy these days the role model should ve Cristiano Ronaldo. Like him or not he did have a God-given talent. But he worked incredibly hard every day to squeeze every last goal, medal etc he could. If a guy with his ability can work that hard - or Mo Salah or Kevin De Bruyne etc - anyone should aspire to.

Andy sawers

I see, was just wondering since he didn't even feature during pre season. Thanks for the update David 👍🏻

Paul

Great discussion, boys. I tend to agree with the points made—it’s baffling when we have a right-back now playing as a CM, LB, and RW, or a striker like Danilo who isn’t even fit enough to come off the bench, yet we still don’t give academy players a chance in their natural positions. What’s the point of having them in the academy if they’re being overlooked for someone not fully fit? The decision to overlook Lovelace in favour of a striker who can’t even come off the bench raises serious questions. He could surely give us 10 good minutes. £3 millon wasting away.

Spoon

Paul bigger issue is when we try and get the next Lovelace why would any kid want to come to us ? It’s one thing leaving the English set up to get game time, experience and exposure but if we need to give them chances. It was early but I liked the look of Lovelace. Seemed motivated had the physicality and a bit about him but he has only had a handful of games since joining us off the back of breaking into the Millwall team. It’s a balance and can’t be all kids all across the starting 11 but we need to put some faith in them for me. Especially when we seem to give anyone from outwith the UK opportunities and time. The pressure around the club to win doesn’t help the young guys either to be fair, but we should break the cycle and try and get some in or we just won’t be an attractive option for people we pitch soon.

Paul

I completely agree Spoon. We have the facilities and the name, but we lack a reputation for providing a clear pathway. We don't even play competitive matches with our B team. It genuinely astonishes me that we’d rather play senior players out of position than give an academy player a chance in his natural role. You’ve made an excellent point about how we still view our own young players as "kids", yet we don’t apply the same label to those we sign, like Cortes, who is already 20. We really need to change that mindset. Ultimately we need a manager that will give them a chance. I'm yet to be convinced we will sadly. Barcelona have no issue playing theirs. I'm sure ours would survive in the SPFL!

Graeme McLeod

Part of the argument against giving youngsters a chance years ago was that we'd need to leave out some proven international talent to develop them. That isn't the case now. Nor do the senior players we have show that they can cope with the demands of playing for the club - they're either not good enough, or don't have the mentality. I'd be more inclined to go along with this "the manager needs at least two years to challenge for the title" pleas if we actually were bedding in youngsters. As it stands most of the foreign players we bring in every season are subpar, and it makes the lack of opportunities given to youngsters more disheartening. There's always going to be excuses for not giving them chances, but they frankly ring hollow when you rarely win trophies and your first team is full of dross.

Spoon

Paul, Graeme couldn’t agree more with both of you. You have nailed the frustration I have with the rebuild / player trading line from the club. If we were seeing proper change and a path to a new model I think most would live with some short term volatility. We have been fed that vision for a good few years now but never actually seen it materialise. I think 75% of our business should be domestic or at least UK focused, a bit of flair is always good but our core should be the best local talent and youth. I have been concerned about signings like Igamane for exactly the reasons you highlight. It’s nothing against the boy at all and hopefully he is good but….he isn’t any more developed than our own guys who are at least acclimatised to our football, know the club and language etc and surely deserve a chance ? They would be far cheaper too! I’m not convinced our forays into the more exotic leagues has worked, at best it’s higher risk and we should be playing the safe bets in our current position. Spot on comment gents.

Colin Mathie

Can we stop with the project signings ffs, get 1st team starters in.
