A bit early to draw any conclusions from the side, especially in Europe, where we are facing better sides that are several levels up from what we face in Scotland. That’s always been the3 challenge of European football, since the day it started. I never thought I’d see anywhere near a European final after the seasons that preceded the 92/92 season, which were disasters. I’ve now seen us in two finals, and also make the last sixteen of the Champions League under McLeish. Us reaching the final in Seville lit a beacon of hope for football, because UEFA have constantly set up the competition for that not to happen. I think we’ll come again in Europe, but I think this lot are going to have to learn lessons fast if we’re to do something this season. When you can;t buy quality, then you need to try and buy the time for potential to grow. That’s where we are.

Fair comment on the striking options and team in general. Cant help but feel though we have compound problems across lots of positions due to personnel and set up. Football is about relationships and we have a team with constant churn, players being used out with their optimal position and skill set all too often for me. It must be soul destroying for some guys to look around them and see different guys every week and often playing a role they weren’t signed for. Up front is where we see it most acutely, your comment on Dessers is fair and sadly that’s what £4m gets your hear days, an average striker. The plus points of Dessers are work rate and fitness, his down sides are his clinical finishing., if he wa the full package with his pedigree he would be a £10m plus striker and elsewhere. What we could do to support and amplify the good he brings is put him into a pair, for some reason though we elect to just run him into the ground, asking and expecting him to get 40 goals. It’s madness. Personally I think you see with Igmane coming in, albeit in short spells, that he didn’t really look any better and the frontline wasn’t more slick or cohesive, he looked isolated and a bit of a cart horse chasing folk about. Again, not really his fault more a symptom of a system that for me at least doesn’t work domestically. Add in that your whole game hinges on output from the one position on the park that’s notoriously flighty, the wingers, and it’s not a recipe for steady output either in goals or supply to the strikers. If you look at the stability in defence and how much better that’s looking just by playing the same guys, asking them to do the simple things and it’s no surprise we are seeing the benefits. I always liked Souttar and was a bit scriptural of Propper but cuts clear they are building understanding and definitely compliment each other. It has also alllwed Jefte to settle in and bloom with even Tav looking a bit more like himself. Middle to front doesn’t work to my eye, Barron is papering over a lot of cracks in there by sheer energy and no shortage of drive, but I’m not convinced it’s been to the benefit of Diomande who is looking a bit jaded, might just be he is really young but the balance in midfield isn’t quite there. Bajrami looks excellent but for me he needs to be in the 10 to see his best. The wingers however just don’t work for me, none of them are particular good in terms of delivery or goal output and the one who might have something about him can’t stay fit in Cortes. I disagree that Cerny played well, bar the goals I think he offered little going forward or covering. He overplays and as has been mentioned looks every inch a one trick pony, but more than that I don’t see him getting the space to do his thing domestically against packed defences and his crossing isn’t that much cop. Too many managers now are obsessed with being gurus, they want fancy tactics and methods where to be a true pioneer in the modern game in more industrial leagues for me the focus should be on being compact, energetic and drilled. I despair at our coaching currently as I can see little evidence, despite hundreds of international breaks, that much is being worked on in training. I don’t see weakness in guys games or the teams set up being addressed it seems to be cookie cutter stuff where a guy is bought and plugged into the machine as opposed to skills identified and direction or skills imparted to enhance what we have. I think with every one setting out Christmas trees and inverted positions or false 9s we would do well in our league to return to being a solid 442 or 433. It might be unfashionable but it would give our opponents something different to think about. It would at least reduce reliance on wingers being on it constantly and give our strikers some support. Looking at Igmane and Dessers to me there’s a pair there that could do damage and we aren’t helping them help us using them as we do in this set up. Despite the group think I disagree that Dessers can’t hold or link up well, as I see it he doesn’t have anyone around him most of the time to link up with as they are all miles back or away out wide. You guys made the out or one of you did that we are just a bit burning and predictable, a bit meh to watch. That to me is the biggest indictment of Clements style, I struggle to see why he wants to play this way, it’s not entertaining and it’s not effective. I like the guy but I don’t see him bringing us on as the months past I see him getting bogged down and the team just isn’t enjoyable to watch. Not all his fault but he has to control or impact the elements he can, sadly for me anyway there’s a bit of fatigue to watching us now that hasn’t been there for me in the 50 years I have followed the team. We have had good times and bad, he have been down or up but there has always been something ahead to buy into, I have seen to many guys in recent years come in for the ‘rebuild’ only to see little change or the proposed vision fall short for me. Just not seeing much to get excited about in this current managers plan or the boards squad building. Feels more like a duty when watching a game than a pleasure.

We have Mattondo, Cortes, Cerny and Macausland. Then Jefte and Bajrami who can also go wide if need be. That's 6 players for 2 spots, how many more are we needing? It's quality that's the issue and injuries, not numbers. We are stuck with crap like Mattondo because his gold plated contract. What's the solution?

Scott Dickson

Oscar Cortes was a mental deal to make permanent. Signed him on loan, played 4-5 games then was out for the rest of the season. We shat it when we kept missing out on signings to take the bait and agree to a loan with an obligation, he’s now been injured 3x times since pre-season and it’s barely October. Why do we keep doing this…

Derek Stevenson

Very good reflective pod. Clement has to make the right back decision soon as that is one of the very few areas where there is quality competition waiting. It feels like “maybe Tav still has a 2021/22 performance in him” from the coaching staff. Kasanwirjo deserves the shirt, good player on good form v good player on consistent poor form. That’s what a manager decides on, and Clement needs to do the correct thing.

Martin Boyd

Not too bothered by that game I’m 62 and have watched that game all my life under multiple managers. As for the standard of football Mr Marshal wouldn’t have enjoyed some of Walters teams grinding out these sort of results, functional is being kind.

Craig Murray

This was a great pod and 100 percent correct, the dutch full back immediately makes us far more solid and ou correct in pointing out he is now chapping on the door to start , as unfortunatly now Tav is our weak link and teams are targetting him. You are also bang on about a striker, we badly need one , ok Dessers scores goals but in this formation he has to do far more , hes just to nice a striker , we nee someone who will rough up the centre halfs , great pod tho guys.

Heart and Hand

That’s what we said. Two fit wingers, two regularly injured and then ‘guys who can play there’ which is rarely ideal. So if they are vital to the system, and in that system they are, is that likely to be successful? So the answer is bring in more or change to a system less reliant on output from wide.

Jim Milne

I feel that the longer Clement keeps Tav in the lineup without a rest or just letting the inform player play first that the noise from fans will only get louder.

Martin Sutherland

Most of our issues are the manager. Poor tactics, blind faith in under performers and fails to react to issues in game. We can talk about budgets and generational talents until the cows come home. The manager is the problem. Barron makes his first error for us and is dropped. Tav does stuff like that once a games and remains in the 11.

Craig

Concern that this run of narrow wins is quite reminiscent of the start of the season that saw Gio getting the sack. The manager won't be going anywhere, but it would only a couple of incidents going the wrong way for us to start spilling more points and letting the tims get out of sight.

Martin Sutherland

On Hagi, I think the reception was the fans sending a message to the board and manager. The situation, like many at Rangers, was handled poorly.

Calum McManus

At this point (save for Aberdeen & Celtic) is it not worth giving Mckinnon, Fraser, Lovelace, rice a go ? Baron proves that if you are good enough then you play! If they are not good enough then that shows a bigger and wider issue at the level of our academy! On Sundays game, Raskin was solid! Diomande was terrible, igmane showed flashes but I fear he lacks a strikers instinct (tavs wicked cross into the box shows that) & still too slow to do anything with the ball.

Nikky Cairney

Couldn’t disagree anymore with the start of the pod. The same gap was there with Dortmund, Leipzig, Porto and Benfica two to three years ago. We competed against the teams perfectly fine because we were well coached. Gerrard had his 433 where we sat in and could compete with anyone at Europa league level. GVB developed the high press man for man approach that led us to a final. The difference on Thursday is the manager. He’s an imposter who continually picks the wrong team and sticks to the same formation and tactics no matter who we play and it barely got us over the line against Hibs at home 3-4 days before hand when they could’ve scored 2 or 3 on another day. Sounds like an excuse for the manager blaming it on budgets. Let’s see how Lyon get on against other European sides this season. They are 8th in Ligue 1 btw with a -2 goal difference and 10 points from 7 games.

Martin Boyd

Second time round it was understandable first time when were outspending the league it was turgid. Hopefully we can be entertained like in Malmo more often as players come back and options are increased.

Heart and Hand

Actually, this is a good example of what we were talking about. Firstly, we said the gap was getting bigger and will continue to. Rangers wage bill and transfer costs were higher 2-3 years ago. It’s gone down since because we can’t afford to run at that level. 2ndly You say ‘8th in Ligue 1’ - how is that relevant? Where do you think our squad would finish in that league?

Heart and Hand

Now, the counter isn’t to say ‘budgets are an excuse’ - they are facts and they make an enormous difference, it’s just silly to suggest a side with a 300m spend is unlikely to have better players than a 30m one - but that the budget discrepancy in Europe is reversed at home. So if we struggle in Europe due to it, we should be benefiting from it in Scotland. Just logical.

Nikky Cairney

My point about Lyon being 8th is to show they aren’t exactly flying domestically. They spent a bucket load on the summer but they were 4-1 up without any of them playing. My point is more that we can 100% compete with teams like Lyon in one off games especially at Ibrox if we are set up properly. And that’s why I’m pointing fingers at the manager. Everyone knew Lyon are dangerous in wide areas so why not take Tav out and play Nana. Bring Sterling in to a flat midfield 3 which would allow Sterling (right) and Dio (left) to help out in transitions which was our downfall a lot of the time.

Heart and Hand

Aye but we’re 3rd in Scotland! I don’t disagree we made it easier than we should have, but the point we were trying to make is a bigger one - long term, UEFA have deliberately designed football to be like this and the gap between the haves and have-nots will only increase.

Hendi

Gerrard never altered his approach. We also got our pants pulled down by Lyon when he led us against them and we never created half as many clear cut chances as we did the other night. Rangers getting pumped in Europe the first time we come up against a decent team really isn't that unusual over the last 30 odd years. We have just become accustomed to over performing in the last few years.

Adam

I don't think he was dropped, I think he was rested/rotated. We really need to stop viewing everything through a negative lens. When a player gets dropped, the manager rarely subs said player on at HT in the next game. It was pretty evident he was managing Barron and Diomande's minutes, after what was a tough run of fixtures with very little in the way of cover due Raskin's injury recovery.

Adam

The Tav stuff is a really difficult one for the manager to navigate, and it's one I think he's going to have to bite the bullet on in the coming weeks. Tav is very popular in the dressing room, despite what the fans feel and think about him. Both internally and externally, Clement has got to get it right. He can't afford to have it backfire on him. As much as there's a desire from a sizable section of the support, to see it happen. Like any football fan base, we've got an abundance of 'Captain Hindsights', who'll chastise Clement for doing it, despite demanding for it to happen. The media are also going to scrutinise the decision, the player that takes Tav's starting jersey is going to be under a microscope too. I like the look of Kasanwirjo, but he's only played a couple of games. We've seen plenty of players look brilliant in cameos, but then wilt when given the starting jersey every week. Sterling's form hasn't been good enough this season, to be fair to him, he's copped to that himself in recent interviews. It's made the 'drop Tav campaign' even more of a headache for the manager. Are Kasanwirjo and Sterling, going to stand up to everything that replacing Tav entails? I have a feeling we're going to find out either way.

Adam

He needs to go about it in the right way, though. Tav is the longest serving member of the current squad and plays a crucial role in running the dressing room. It's something the manager has to be a 100% on. Either Sterling or Kasanwirjo have to live up to the billing too. As impressed as I've been with Kasanwirjo, we've seen plenty of players look good and lively in cameos, it's all about consistently delivering. Can they do it? I get the current sentiment around Tav from the support at the moment, isn't great, but we shouldn't be flippant. Dropping the captain is a big deal, it will be a big deal in the stands, in the dressing room and among the media. Clement has got to weigh all of that up prior to taking the plunge.

Martin Sutherland

He didn’t really have any option but to bring him on. The squad is terrible. Whilst Clement is continuing to be stubborn and make mistake after mistake in big games, it’s very difficult to not view things negatively. My view on him has been consistent since April. We won’t go anywhere under him.

8luenose1872

Why does the much older tav not get rested/rotated when it could only benefit him and us considering kasanwirjo is a better player atm. These are the type of decisions that has me starting to think Clement isnt gonna get us up to speed and he has not one ounce of tactical nous which is an even bigger problem. I hope he proves me wrong.
