St Mirren 2-1 Rangers Postmatch Reaction 26 Dec 2024

A dreadful Rangers display in Paisley leaves David not feeling any Christmas cheer.

Comments

Mark Rennie

He has to go. Can we talk about just how bad Bajrami is?

Bryan Watson

2 strikers was working and can understand the need for rotation however performance was abject. In hindsight you keep Kelly in, don't imagine Butland has had much rest last few days with a newborn + 2 young kids at Christmas. Bad result but I've always said that I would rather young players like Sterling, Jefte, Igamane, Diomande, Barron were playing because they'll improve even though they will have stinkers. Today for me is one of those days. Have to get 2 CBs and a striker in Jan. Feel we are 5 players away from being a good team, 2 CB, ST, LW, DM. Beyond anger because this is just where we are at. Onto the next one

Alastair Thomson Mills

It’s over. No Rangers manager can survive being 12 pts behind. Get new manager in for January transfer window.

Graham Ross

If we keep the manager then the Board are accepting 2nd best.

Brian Fisher

We need a sacrificial lamb to take the rest of the season because it's going to get a lot worse before it gets better. If that's Alex Rae then so be it. Line up Muscat to come in the summer and we go from there.

Alan Baxter

Has he had a good game yet where you would give him at least a 8 or 9 out of 10. In baffled at whoever thought he was better than average and worth bringing in

Gary B

Back to square one.

Billy McCormack

Butland needs dropped, and Kelly given a run, cause Butland has had abject performance all season especially against the puddle drinkers

Fraser86

I think proper is awful, he the managers buy and he's stinking, raskin plays forward big difference defo need new cbs possible managers also

8luenose1872

Theres no justification for resting danilo, hes hardly played and he got subbed early v dundee. This clueless manager was desperate for the leeway to go back to his pathetic system and tactics and the obvious happened. U cant legislate for those 2 goals but if we started our most important players in danilo and raskin we probably would at the very least not lost that game and imo would have won. He really needs to go, its fkn criminal to go back to what didn't work one fkn time all season in the league, especially away from home, and that's even in the games we scraped a win in.

8luenose1872

Barron is nowhere near the level of raskin and they are about the same age. Barron has been decent this season in a bad team but the drop off from raskin is a stark one mate.

Bryan Watson

Raskin is 100% a much better player than Barron is right now. However, lets not forget when Barron was the only sliver of positivity at the start of the season. Is he a world beater? Absolutely not, clear flaws and inconsistencies. However has he shown potential and qualities that will grow with time? Aye. Its frustrating but thats what will happen with younger players. Raskin came in and was brilliant, then last season was a total non-event and now seems back to his best. Inconsistency is par for the course for young players.

Fraser86

Sorry someone wrote in the comments we need to line up muscat my reply why muscat?

Rona Bluebell

Back under the duvet I go. 2025 has got to be better.

8luenose1872

You could see he had quality early on but this managers system and tactics is ruining a good few players imo. He couldn't wait to go back to his one up front long ball shit and it cost us today. Yes there were 2 howlers but it comes from us being shite all 1st half due to his tactics and the players being under pressure because of it imo. He found a formula that worked and scrapped it at the 1st sign he had some leeway.

Fraser86

I agree with Butland being dropped, just had a kid maybe a good excuse to rest him

Graham Jones

We don’t need a new manager, we need a new board. That’s always been the case. Their incompetence is the genesis of all the issues we are facing right now, and that’s been the case for the past two years or more. They sealed their fate when Gilligan ruled out King returning for a period, so now the only way forward is for him to launch a hostile takeover. I just don’t know if he is willing to put himself through that again. The board aren’t being malicious with intention, but through their own inabilities to run the club well. That is why they need to be encouraged to move on when the right backer makes themselves known. And no, I don’t know anything. It’s just me saying what I’m thinking after watching that crap.

Scott Corral

The Raskin resting was valid with the suspension hanging over him, at least we learned that Barron isn’t the answer to step in at least not now. Another thing that causes huge frustration I’ve got is with the 2 left backs on the books.

Graeme Smith

Don’t agree that we collectively take the foot off the gas. We simply lack the quality to capitalise on the pressure we create and kill games off, allowing teams to creep back into matches. Shite either way.

Jim Milne

Whilst I do agree, I don't see it changing. Clement will get the rest of the season IMO. The board won't pull the trigger yet, even Patrick Stewart's comments confirmed he thought Clement wasn't being supported fully. I do agree mate. Merry Christmas.

Paul Kerr

They said on RTV that any points accumulated today wouldn't kick in till after the New Year game. Something about a 2 week gap? I have no clue on what the current rules are on it. Seems a lame excuse to me anyway, Raskin shouldn't be getting rested unless the result is in the bag. If he keeps tinkering how the fuck are they meant to get these 'automatisms' he goes on about. He's not consistent, so it reflects in his team.

David Campbell

Sadly this is where we are these days. We've got players that simply don't have the mentality to play for a club of our size. I've no idea how you sort that without a sizable investment in the club.

Heart and Hand

I just have no faith he’ll turn it around. Maybe I’m wrong, wouldn’t be the first time, but I just don’t see it.

Spoon

To me it’s double edged, we have players who are bang average that get overhyped, couple that with manager who is clueless when it comes to the Scottish game and it’s a recipe for continual disappointments. The cup final showed they don’t have to be very good to beat us, despite all the effort we got the craft and quality gap was still there. Being able to peak (in effort if not result) for one game might give us a punchers chance in a cup but it won’t ever win the league. While we continue with guys who can turn up only in perfect conditions but can’t battle for a win we willl struggle. Too many passengers, too many guys we pretend are good enough but for one reason or another spend half the match minutes we need then out or unavailable. Then the tactics, just terribly poor. Igamane looked like Dessers from the early season isolated striker not making any impact phase we had. At one point he was trying (in a Deja vu way) to shut down three defenders who just passed around him. The 9 up alone just doesn’t work in Scotland why doesn’t he learn. Today what was more worrying was how exposed we are against any kind of determined physical striker. Nothing cunning about St Mirren did but it caused us problems all day. Sterling will get the flak for losing the ball but rewatch the winner and you can see Danilo jogging back as the boy who strikes it is lining up for the shot. We just aren’t good enough, but fundamentally this group of players aren’t able to understand or execute what he is trying to do, coupled with his plan being a poor match for Scottish football. Something has to change, the upturn now looks like a blip rather than the abject crap we watched for months and seems to be back.

Robert Atkinson

In a summer with limited funds, we spaffed £7m on Cortes and Bajrami. What have we got to show for it?

Andy McNeill

Why start Butland after being out for parental leave? We rotate like that? Play the first 70 then rotate FFS.

Alastair McGeoch

It’s not a matter of “If” anymore, it’s “When”. It’s almost 12 months of this dross/inconsistency from Clement. Even he looked a bit resigned to it at the end tonight I thought. You could also see the frustration in Cerny and Hagi tonight. Lost count of the amount of times they were imploring the players around them to move/make runs/give them options.

Andy McNeill

He is just here as a plae marker. 2nd tier pro and technically good but what is he here for beyond money and the lifestyle won't suit him compared to Italy or Switzerland.

Adam Copeland

Clement won't be gone after this. We will probably bounce back and beat Motherwell. But then we will get beat off them. If he goes 7 (or 8?) Games against them without a win then he just cannot remain.

Derek Stevenson

The keeper is poor at the moment. Pröpper will never do. Ridvan should be touted to any Turkish club. Bajrami is doing nothing much, Hagi slowed it down terribly tonight. Bastion & Dio played in the same six yard zone all 1sr half!!

Al-WATP

I honestly agree 100% mate as I regularly do with your posts, everything you said is what I’m thinking, nothing to add, you’re spot on 👌🏻👏🏻👍🏻

Spoon

Wish I was wrong tbh, preferred when he came in and was a breath of fresh air. Just seen the project coaches come here and fail too often as they can’t adapt their vision to our league. Depressing really.

Christopher paterson

It’s all a bit same old same Old - earlier post said something has to change totally agree progress is taking care of a game like tonight it’s like we get close and the bottle crashes again - different group of players same thing happens - need a someone to instill a new mentality at the club

Christopher paterson

Used to love boxing day game - now the nightmare after Christmas 😡

CJT

Poor first half . No other word for it. Better 2nd but tbh fed up saying we ’deserved’ better, just individual errors/on another day those that hit the woodwork go in etc. A team in transition will be inconsistent but we drop from ordinary to poor too often and are good far too infrequently. Almost never in the hurly burly of places like Paisley. How desperate we are to see signs of something better is evident from a home Europa league draw and a cup final defeat where there were ‘positives’ aplenty trotted out. Most I’ve spoken to and what most podders seem to be seeing is signs of hope in the last weeks . However every poor result seems to trigger a clamour for managerial change. It makes it an inevitability imo. I guess I’m just in the place where we should just get it done now. It really feels like it needs a fresh start. We can’t waste the next transfer window. Need to maximise them all. If there is any view within the club PC isn’t the long term option then they need to bite the bullet now. The facts are we are further behind them than a feckin Michael Beale team was more than a year into the PC era. We’ve already dropped points to half the league sides this season and missed out on a very winnable trophy (that seems to be ok because we didn’t get hammered like a few weeks before we thought we might). A defeat at Ibrox next week will make it at least 15 points behind with the worst OF managerial start for any Rangers manager in our history. He can’t survive that surely. Even with a win the new CE needs to be cold and calculating when considering how to approach the rest of the 24/25 season and beyond. Pains me to say but for me that means making a change regardless of the OF result. PC was very much worth a try. I was very much of the view that he needed time. I’m now very much of the view he’s had it and the better performances can now be clearly viewed as outliers. The type of performance we seen today is the norm. Time to change that narrative.

Scott Stewart

Just as I was starting to feel optimistic again, it’s really Hard to take positives from performance , our away form is pish poor . Raskin and Danilo done well and made a difference second half . However Yet gain we shoot ourselves in the foot. Hard to take , hard to watch and murder when your facing that mob in a weeks time , all was shaping up well to set the game up nicely , but that’s another major setback! Sickener !

Al-WATP

It is mate - we all want these guys to be a success but over the course your comments sum up where I’m at and are spot on

Spoon

Respect that view but simply put the board don’t put the team out in that formation and don’t ‘coach’ them. We have by far the second largest budget and talent pool in Scotland. To go up against St Mirren with our embarrassment of riches and lose is criminal. It’s doubly so when we revert to a tactic and setup that the manger should know by now doesn’t work. The board had their own battles to fight and largely put the club back onto a decent footing. They could have backed some managers more or others less but let’s not pretend as a club we haven’t wasted a hell of a lot of resources to get here. To me what we see come kick off isn’t on the board, you can’t watch us in Europe and see the potential to then watch us domestically to see something in this set up is broken. Same players, same facilities yet wildly different results, this is a guy who signed on for Euro Rangers forgetting that trebles are won with domestic success. Clement isn’t talking about financial gaps today….

Jim Milne

When Danilo equalised in the cup final before it went to penalties I was feeling regret for the things I had said and calling for his head. Okay, any team can lose on penalties it's a coin flip. Then the var debacle and I was feeling like I'd ran my mouth too soon. Yet once again everytime I feel we are turning a corner we go into reverse and back up the corner. It's exhausting. Since 55 & Seville all it has been is "highs" that have brought 2 cups from 9, and constant lows. We only seen to perform when the pressure is off and as soon as any sign of progress looks to come players shit the bed or Clement messes with successful tactics or both. I hate the thought of firing another manager but we can't continue. If this was one away blip then fine I can live with that but it's not. It's 14pts from 39pts. We will probably best them in the Ner'day game, he will get a stay of execution we will feel elation and think "okay, he's won a meaningful game against them" only to lose against Hibs or Dundee in the next two games. If we lose January 2nd Ibrox will be half empty for the rest of the season.

James Muir

YOU PLAY URE STRONGEST TEAM AVALIABLE BALOGUN IS OK BUT YOU CANT RELIE ON ANY PLAYER INJURY PRONE THAT INCLUDES SOUTTAR WE WILL NEED TO RELIE ON YOUNG DEFENDERS UNTIL WE BRING COVER IN EARLY JANUARY? IF WE CAN AFFORD TOO

JimM

Sorry but I can’t see what Rae offers now never mind in charge 🤷‍♂️

Glyn Davies

Spot on Robert.......Another example is spending money on Robin Propper.......he is not an upgrade on Ben Davies who we fired away on loan just to waste precious resources on another bombscare centre back! As for the other two you mention, one clearly isn't built for this league & the other is just another in a long line of over priced duds we splash out on because we have an absolutely brutal scouting network......Sure Bajrami shows the odd flash but i am adding him to the list of recent disasters such Desssers, Propper, Dowel, Lammers, Davies, Matondo, Sands etc etc.....

QB_72

One step forward, two steps back fs. Aberdeen getting beat gave us ever more of an incentive to move forward but naw. Pish poor right enough.

Glyn Davies

I don't really give a fuck if I upset the Tav fan club here because that shower of spinless charlatans led onto the park by Tav have ruined my Xmas once again! Tav set the tone for this disaster within the first few minutes when like a school boy failed to stop & control a pass that could of put us into a promosing attacking position but he just let the ball roll past his feet & out for a St Mirren throw & then proceeded to get roasted down his line by Declan John.....Ive said it since the summer & ill say it again! Until Tav is gone (& several other players) this vicious cycle will continue......Yes, Tav has been far from the worst player on the park in recent weeks but to me it's no coincidence that now he is back being a guaranteed starter after his little spell on the nauhty step & with the knowledge that Kasanwirjo is out for the season the standards have began to slip yet again....there was red flags a plenty vs Dundee & I called it out post match on Saturday on H&H that if we don't get the finger out, tonight & the weekend game have potential to be a serious banana skin! & why am I not surprised that Rangers proved me right once again! I had a bad feeling in my gut prior to KO once I saw the line up, shape & who was refereeing the game......for once the refereeing can't & shouldn't really be looked at because Butland could of seen red for his moment of madness! On Butland, why would Clement not allow him another game at home with his new born....Kelly is a perfectly reliable deputy & games vs the likes of St Mirren should be bread & butter to our no 2.......I dread to think what will happen to us on the 2nd with that back line! Tav will bottle it, Sterling will prob be due a injury as he has played 2 games on the bounce, Propper is a disaster & Jefte has been miles off it for past 3 games & I have zero faith in Leon King as a CB if he is to be incorporated to the back line......he's tidy on the ball but horrendous under pressure! God help us.........

Maca82

I watch a bit of St Mirren on a freebie with the wee fella and when I seen that side thought ffs this will be more of a slog than usual away to them and so it was. The fact Robinson felt confident enough the get fresh legs on to press our back line high late on suggests we stopped what was working after we equalised. I may be an eternal optimist but I still think this is fixable as proven by our euro results . Phil Clement can’t fix it though that’s certain but I reckon we have until the summer to suffer. Don’t start me on VAR and the WWE tactics David Dickinson endorsed, Celtic while a better team don’t have to cope with that added dimension.

Scott

Dreadful 1st 45 minutes. 15 minutes after the break that would win you this and many other leagues, then after the equaliser what seemed like sheer relief and foot back off the gas. Just dont get it.

Andy Fullen

He should rest Raskin against celtic to make sure he is available for Fraserburgh.

Adam Williamson

This isn’t Rangers anymore. We’ve completely lost every last vestige of our identity as a winning club. We are just a run of the mill shite SPL team, like Aberdeen. I think the damage done in the last three years may well prove irreversible.
