Adam and Ally return after a long hiatus to chat all things Rangers tactics.

Amongst the usual ramblings, we cover things like:

  • The last days of Clement

  • Was it really that difficult to change formation?

  • How impressive were the last three games and what can we expect moving forwards?

On next weeks show, we'll talk about different playing styles and what we think suits whatever Rangers might look like on and off the pitch next season.

Any questions - stick them in the thread!

Brilliant as always. Good to have you back.

Great analysis guys. I very much agree with the opinion on switching formations and why it’s done. Players are pretty switched on these days around this. We regularly switch between games and in game with our U18 team and the lads know immediately where to go and how to link in with teammates; in fact our midfielders are much better than us at spotting where to tweak as they are in amongst it and see it earlier. We only get an hour a week on the training pitch with them and we don’t spend a lot of time on shape. It’s a fairly simple equation of numbers and quality in areas and how you counter that. Quite often we come up against teams who use a “cheat” who moves all over the pitch way out of nominal position (usually the central forward) and they are usually effective enough that we place a man marker on them; follow them absolutely everywhere. That clearly disrupts our own shape but the boys manage to cope with it in areas where we might be short as a result. Regarding the comment about an explosive front 5 and functional back 5, do you think this is enough now in Scotland? We have seen teams like St Mirren now moving their press up the pitch and us really struggle with that as well as the low block. Is that a quality of players issue in the Rangers team? Or could the current squad be coached to provide that quality, speed of movement etc up front? What would we need to do in summer in terms of players to replace/keep to achieve that?

James McSween

Bit of a silly question but surely professional players have played every formation through their careers? Even the young guys like Barron and Igamane should know the basics of formations. Clements point on training on new formations was nonsense.

Those Ross County and Dundee games last season were a massive red flag for me. Sadly I blamed Lunny and wanted him gone this summer because he was dominated by their midfield, but looking back now it was Clement that left him in the firing line with incapable players beside him instead of changing shape

Great pod.....for the last few seasons we have been saying the players we have been buying seem to enjoy open attacking play like the euro games..but they collapse when they have to play against scottish teams who park the bus as they say...no space and they get worn down with these games...but now the so called smaller budget teams see us as prey and they now attack more and we panic....years ago only a few teams would hope to take any points from us.not now..we have lost that fear factor...and its going to take a while to get that back...but hopefully we will.
