Rangers 0-2 Hibernian Postmatch Reaction 5 Apr 2025

David reports from Ibrox after another dreadful Rangers display sees a fifth successive home loss.

Watch them play Bilbao off the park Thursday

Four clear chances missed by Dessers in the first half that we dominated throughout. It must be soul destroying for guys like Souttar who is an 7 or 8/10 every game. If Cerny is a £7m player then we forget him as we can get 2 players who would do more for us than that. Jefte is in the same boat as his defending is so weak. Barron is worth persevering with as a solid squad player. I doubt Dio will ever show his best football in this league so they should cash in on him. Raskin could also go if the price is right. Or alternatively, they bring in a new spine of GK CB CM and S for decent money and use what we have to build around that. I dunno! As usual, a very fair assessment, David.

John Jamieson

The thing for me is if we keep the back door shut the pressure isn’t on dessers as much to be perfect up front. The other issue is if not dessers who else was scoring today? Team shoots itself in the foot game after game and this result was coming

Robert White

Posers. Weak mentality. Tavs first 5 passes were back. Butland, under his body in middle of goals, thru his legs middle of goals. Dessers 5 good chances. None of them are Rangers class. Or is that it now. Just like any club. Defeat is ok. Big games are the attraction....its awful the devolution of the club by the current board.

Jim McCutcheon

Really bad poor poor squad David 🤷‍♂️

Vanb bryceter

I love your analysis David, however the comment about young Munn was a bit off the mark for me. I haven't seen a worse sequence of performances from a Rangers keeper in my lifetime going all the way back to Stewart fkn Kennedy. There is no chance I think that Mason Munn or any keeper in the SPL is capable of the level of shite that Butland is producing week on week. Spot on regarding Ferguson he is every bit as much to blame for sticking by him and a few others. How happy will auchenhowie be from now to season end I wonder?. It won't be as unhappy as I am with this shower of imposters

Craig Guthrie

Just so soft and no desire. Other teams know that and there is no fear coming to Ibrox

Andrew Hind

If they can't be bothered doing the basics right then let's just call it a season.

Mark Boyd

David, I have said this long and weary. We can talk about shape, tactics, player profile, sell on all we want. At rangers, if you don’t have character and live up to expectations you will fail. This is not football manager. You see it at United down south. We sign players by Y scout as if we have a clue how they will play. We desperately need a core of experience or we are fucked

Duncan

I’ve been saying it all season. Kelly isn’t the answer but he can’t possibly be any worse than Butland at the moment.

Rachel

It’s just too often with Butland now. He needs dropped and maybe it’ll give him a kick up the arse, maybe not but I’d just give Kelly/Munn their shot might not be the answer but the alternative is…

Andy MacArthur

Kelly was dropping the same ammount of clangers last season as Butland but for Motherwell. I’m not convinced he is the answer, however if you continue with Butland it’s a message that mediocrity is acceptable. The team look even more shapeless domestically now than under PC. The problems at this club are not the manager. Even with investors, FFP means we have to sell before we invest heavily. Good thing we have near a full team to sell

Rose Mcloughlin

Thanks David sorry you have to keep on coming on to talk after these games..best quote ever about the fans...I come with my friend who is nearly 85 and is partial sighted white stick aswell...we have to stop a few times for her to catch her breath...reach the club deck thank god for the lift...slunges her face in the toilet to cool down then climbs those high steps.the effort she makes to get to her seat is unbelievable...then she watches that shite...They should be ashamed of themselves.

Cunts

Robert White

Core of Scottish: we are being pumped by effort and competence. St Mirren, Motherwell, Hibs...Queens Park ffs. We need players who know in their bones that every game in Scotland is a cup tie. That winning is first.

Heart and Hand

I agree. Character isn’t occasionally coming back from behind and losing the next week. It’s doing it week in week out.

Vanb bryceter

Just had a chat with my missus about Butland. She made a very interesting point she asked me if Butland was a gambler and could he be involved in you know the unthinkable?

John leitch

That was terrible today Usual failings

Heart and Hand

No I think you misunderstand - I said if Munn comes in and is terrible it’s still only as bad as Butland. So there’s zero to lose playing him.

Gary Shaw

I thought I was hard done to having to stomach it on RTV so hats off to both you and your friend,Rose 👏 🩷💙

Vanb bryceter

Ah my bad thanks for taking the time to clarify 👍

Calum Downham

It would have been proactive dropping Butland before today, now Ferguson has a big call wether to start Kelly for the biggest game of the season Thats just a small speck in a river of shit though, all caused by people above Ferguson. As well as plenty of the players, Koppen should not be here next season given the state of the squad We’re going into next season optimistic for the new owners, but those who think this shadow of a club will be turned over in a quick fix need a reality check. We need the right people in the door and from that point it could take seasons

Rona Bluebell

Listen, today was inevitable. You can’t keep relying on a miraculous fight back. They don’t have what it takes, that’s the bottom line. The Europe run offsets the costs of paying off clement and meeting some other overly high wages. June and some soothing coming and goings over the summer beckons. Until then, we grind on.

Allan

Until the people building the squad are changed and/or the spec of the type of player we buy is changed nothing will change. I'm sick and tired of watching this shite. Sell every non-Scot in the summer. Build a new team with some Scottish spine and sprinkle some fairy dust in and around them.

David Innes

Without Souttar it was always going to be a massive ask for us to get a result. Fearing the worse now

CJT

End of days stuff. Everyone knows there is no permanence at board level, in the training ground, in the dug out or in the pitch and waiting to go or see what comes next. Put that on top of the absolutely infuriating lack of consistency we’ve seen since we’ve been back in the top league (one season aside) and it has become an absolute shit show. Club, top to bottom, has needed gutted since 55. At that point those who’d saved the club had done what they came for, sat back, had a breather and recouped some of their investment. Meantime that lot upped it while we regressed. Assuming the takeover goes through the work to do is massive. I keep hearing the gap isn’t that big because of recent OF games but the truth is they only count if you can beat the rest. We can’t. The long term evidence for that assertion is overwhelming. Needs new sporting director, new head coach, new talent spotting and recruitment structure and, to make a competitive squad, more than a dozen players. Can’t see that all fitting together quickly. We need to get our heads round that we don’t need a transition, we need a complete transformation. These are not short-term. Getting a group that show the right attitude to every game will be key to how patient we (well me at least) will be during that period. As for the next few weeks, I have no emotional attachment to this group and for the first time I’m not sure I’ll attend all the games that are left. God I even think I’ll be more angry that happy if they show up on Thursday. Thoughts I would have considered sacrilege for the past 50 odd years.

Stephen

Not as easy as that. Not sure what Scottish players we would sign. Even then are they wanting to play for Rangers? We need good players regardless of nationality and we need a manager who can get the better of the smaller teams tactically.

G Calder

Is there a manager in the world that could do any better with this group of players ? Maybe sacking Phil wasn’t the solution 🤯🤯

Jim Milne

Clement should have kept Kelly in for the Man Utd game after Butland had been having howlers all season. He had the perfect scenario to keep him out and let him refocus. Butland was injured, Kelly had been performing well and deserved his chance at Old Trafford. That IMO is when this should have been dealt with. Now Barry is going to have to bring Kelly in for the biggest game of his career and our season. Maybe Colin Stewart wasn't the issue afterall, and that the issue was Butland. I had hoped Barry was going to make these big calls early on after he was hired, not weeks after more howlers. Also, Butland needs to go in the summer for his sake and ours. We can't have one of our highest earners performing like this.

Alastair McGeoch

We are not getting much of a bounce from Ferguson because this time the players know most of them will be leaving at end of the season as well - and they are playing like they are on gardening leave. All that’s really left to Ferguson is to change the captain, stop playing players who are out of contract in the summer and start playing youth team players. I think that’s the only way he keeps an amount of fans engaged. Also, make it absolutely crystal clear to whichever players are doing pre match press - do not talk about the players knowing it’s not good enough and we need to sort it out. Just don’t. Sick and tired of hearing players talk and then chuck it at first whistle. This is as worse I can remember it (well maybe PLG and Pedro were worse…)

Alan Riddell

That wad a horrible watch again yesterday. Even in the ground the fans seemed to me to be unsurprised by what unfolded. I don’t think there’s one player in that team that is devoid of criticism for yesterday, and most of the performances this season. I include Souttar, Raskin and Diamonde in that too. Shocking yet again.

Gregg

Agreed Stephen - we won titles under Walter with a core of Scots 15 years ago so lets do that seems to be the call. If they’re good enough - go for it. Not a huge amount about sadly.

Stephen

Yeah. The difference between the two era’s is huge. In the 90’s Scotland were qualifying for World Cups and we were paying EPL level wages to players. I also have a small concern that we are getting to a point in time where current young Scottish players started watching football when we were in the lower leagues and following Rangers might not have been as attractive for them as it once was. There might not be quite as many ‘rangers men’ to pick from in this generation.

Scott Corral

Totally agree David. I absolutely hate the players deciding when they want to earn their vast wages. Don’t get me wrong some are not the level required but the efforts of many when they can’t be arsed is sickening.

Derek Robertson

Aye, because the current crop of Scottish players we have are really seeking the heather on fire

Gary Shaw

I’m not going to lie ,I am excited about the takeover but on the other hand I’m not exactly sure how it changes things……We’ve spent fortunes on players/managers the last few seasons anyway and we’re probably getting worse…..Am I missing something?
