Clement was working at a basket case of a club for the period he was here. He won a League Cup, he had a good record in Europe, and maybe had he been backed with the money thrown at Martin he would’ve done a lot better. So, I think we’re being very unfair on him. Sure, he had weaknesses, but so did Walter when you analyse his record. I think a DoF would’ve helped him enormously, because then you have a voice to counter your thoughts on a player or an idea you have, but it was a lack of quality in terms of personnel he was lacking to use on the pitch. I wish him well down at Norwich City because he’s a gentleman, and I thought he got used as a shield by the board to a large extent. It’s easy to hit the manager when the team are failing, but the under-lying causes were because of boardroom failures. Even when you go back to Beale’s time, those were largely based on boardroom failure, because he was left to run amok with club money without a DoF, so we have to check why someone really failed, because he wasn’t given enough support to succeed. The age of managers who can do everything, like Walter, Fergie, etc, they’ve all more or less disappeared. I think the last one left is possible David Moyes, who is again working magic for Everton. At some point Scotland broke the mould and stopped producing impressive managers, just liek we seem to have stopped doing so with footballers as well.
