I was at the fight and the decision in the main event was up there with Burns vs. Beltrán as the most blatant robbery I've seen live in person. The fight itself was better than I'd expected to, and Catterall showed he's better than the British level fighter he looked on paper. The result just absolutely scunnered any positivity about any of that though. The best and worst of boxing within the space of an hour or so. On the plus side, saw a potentially great Cuban batter an Irishman.

John Smith

Tyson Fury’s one man presser was vintage Gypsy King 😎 Frillian Whyteknickers 🤣

Stephen Rankin

The worst part about the decision is that you weren’t the least bit surprised when it was announced. Hopefully this is the moment where boxing can change forever but I have my doubts. It would be great if they could get the lad Ramirez to fight in the UK again in the future because he’s the kind of boxer you’d want to pay money to see live. Thanks for listening to the pod as well😀

Stephen Rankin

Do you think Whyte should have turned up or is he within his rights to act how he pleases?

Stephen Rankin

Thanks to anybody that listens to my nonsense on the old boxing! If anyone has any suggestions on things they’d like covered then please let me know.

Lee Grant

I do think with the Taylor fight that the commentary was swaying a lot of people opinions (sky comms), I don’t think josh won the fight but listening to alternative comms you get a different perspective, it’s probably best to mute it like we do with Crocker and walker 😂. Having watched it back I have 4-2 to jack, with josh winning rounds 2 & 3. It was a close & really good fight, I was impressed with jacks style. I was going to say he will become world champion but he should already be world champion 😂

John Smith

I think it’s both a case of Hearn perhaps trying to spoil this event and losing the psychological battle. I think he knows he’ll get beat and is trying to get as much cash as he can

Lee Grant

Also, with regards to corruption; look no further than the Irish gangster that can’t leave Dubai & “owns” a management company by the of MTK.

John Smith

I’d personally love a show dedicated to the classic fighters. Jack Dempsey, Max Baer etc. that would be awesome

Stephen Rankin

Could be right John. I think him not turning up has actually put more attention on the fight!

Stephen Rankin

I know the USA side of the broadcast had it a lot closer than Sky did, I think Andre Ward actually had Taylor winning by 1 round. When I watched it back it was a bit closer than I originally thought but still felt that Catterall won it by a few. I suppose the problem is that there’s no clear way for a judge or fans to score a fight so it is subjective but there should be clearer rules so in theory we’re all scoring a fight in a similar way. Yeah I was impressed with the style of Catterall especially his defence and the way he tucked his chin behind the shoulder. Out of interest what did you score rounds 7-12?

Stephen Rankin

Absolutely, he’s the bogeyman of boxing. I haven’t seen the panorama documentary on him but will need to give it a watch.

Lee Grant

Had the back 6 as 2-2 with rounds 10 & 11 as draws due to points being deducted and round 8 being a 10-8 to jack with the knock down.

Lee Grant

I’ve not watched the panorama either, I listen to the fight disciples pod with Adam catterall & nick peet and they highlighted his influence being every boxers manager basically. Seen he’s going to be on James English in the coming weeks which might be an interesting listen.

David Taylor

I was at the Burns Beltran fight that night as well and I tweeted about the similarities with that night. It’s a disgrace that sees many casual fans turn away from the sport and you can understand why, what’s the point in watching a sport that appears to be rigged.

John Smith

The panorama doc is really disturbing. Clearly a powerful and dangerous guy. There’s a really bizarre recreation of his attempted assassination by MTK that you can find on YouTube

David Taylor

Watching fights and disagreeing with the decisions isn’t a new phenomenon, but usually after the fight when you analyse it and listen to differing opinions on how judges might score the rounds, you can see how they came to their decision, but with the fight on Saturday night, even the most kind analysis has Taylor losing the fight, Iain John-Lewis’s card was absolutely inexplicable, there is no possible justification of his score other than corruption or incompetence

David Taylor

Missed the Gill fight on Sunday and just watched it back there, incredible stuff! The ref could easily have stopped it, but what a shot.

David Taylor

I was watching it knowing what was coming and still didn’t think it was going to happen. As much as Saturday night was all that’s bad about boxing, this was the best of it!
