On 11 March 2017 Rangers announced Pedro Caixinha as the club's new manager replacing Mark Warburton who had left the club the previous month. His turbulent reign wouldn't even last until Halloween of that year. In this first episode of a two-part miniseries Harvey Anderson and David Edgar set the context to that Rangers season, Pedro's appointment and the managerial selection process as well as Pedro's initial results at the end of the disappointing 16-17 campaign.

A victim of shocking xenophobia. The way he was treated on bt by Sutton was a disgrace, ally didn't cover himself in glory that day either. Not a good manager, big mistake to appoint him. I still cringe at some of our fans though"wee mad Pedro saying mad things, dugs n caravans"

Impressive away League record

The worst Rangers manager ever. The win at Pittodrie was the one solitary ‘good’ result he achieved in his whole tenure.

Did anyone else dance to the theme music?

Wrong man wrong time. Don’t blame him for taking the job but how on Earth did he get it ? No one one should get to be manager without due diligence being done and most importantly some input from a football man who knows the pressures and stresses of Scottish and European football. That appointment was totally down to the board.

Didn’t know which I would have preferred listening to this morning, Ally as manager in the third division or this 😅

Talk about a curve ball, expecting to talk about the disaster at the start of div 3 to then talk about what was even worse 😅

I managed to talk myself into thinking it might turn out to be a good appointment, and that there must have been some considered reason for appointing the guy. A few days later I was out on a stag do talking to a St Johnstone fan (good lad) who said "it's a punt, isn't it?" and I though, 'ah shit, he's right'. The lies you tell yourself as a football fan.

Think that transfer window really shows how far our scouting has come. Barton, senderos, karanjcar all signed based on the names, you'd never see anything like that now

My first ever experience of listening to H&H was the day that Warburton left and FF was obviously in uproar - and David posted his podcast thread in the Bear Pit. I was never a podcast person before and sort of thought that one required a special machine to listen (luddite alert). But a need for answers took me to H&H that night!

I think another way I rationalisd it at the time was that no big name would touch us, and none of the SPFL managers being linked were good enough, so we had to try something outside the box. I wonder if we would have taken such a big swing with Gerrard if 17/18 hadn't turned into such an emergency. If we'd appointed McInnes he no doubt would have got us into second place and limped on that little bit longer.
