There is no time for the players to wallow in self-pity, we have a Europa League Quarter Final to play.

Thursday takes us back to Portugal and Braga, on a ground where happy memories are plenty as we strive to make the Semi-Finals of the competition.

Alex and Steven provide The Preview.

Just hit the pause button to say an excellent summation by Steven on the game and where this team is.

JM

Am hiding any sharp implements before listening…

Greg

This is where our run comes to an end I think, Morelos is a massive loss.

Iain Campbell

Steven spot on yet again regards the team mentality. And he is absolutely correct regards Aribo. He was a disgrace on Sunday. Yet GVB kept him in the park

Scott King

There’s happy clapping then there’s Striders defence of this group of players, it’s incredible, they have completely chucked it now, the believe they’ve achieved all they had to by getting 55, they think their job is done, strip this squad apart and start again, Steven pretty spot on in his assessment of this group of players

Jeffff96

morelos is the reason we won 55, without him there’s no european runs there’s less income to spend on players etc he’s a modern legend who was surrounded by shite for a couple years and dragged us through

Iain Campbell

Alex, the reality is that they are the yardstick that fans will always compare us to. They worked far harder than us on Sunday and executed a gameplan. That is where the frustration comes from. We reverted entirely to type. That's on the players and GVB. In truth 5-6 players should have been sold after last season

Graeme Craig

Can tell alex didnt see the game on sunday with his defence of the players efforts.

Robert

Great effort on the analysis from the guys. We will have cash to spend next season but will we have the pull to attract decent players?

Scott Watson

Strider has been big enough to stick his neck out and say stuff he knows people are going to give him flak for in the interest of discussion, so I'll do the same Not trying to start any argument amongst bears, just for discussion Did it look like the team had chucked it after 3 minutes? Did it look like the team had chucked it after 87 minutes against Dundee? Would a team that has chucked it have kept going so late to make it count against Dundee or have come out flying at the weekend? Is there a simpler explanation that we just gave away two absolutely dreadful goals? Was this game any worse in terms of performance than the New Year game last year? Remember we famously had zero shots on target that day... Is there an argument that the biggest single difference is just that McGregor saved us last year and cost us this year? (And also an argument that Gio hasn't been brave enough to cut his losses with him)

Harold mccartney

“ the players didn’t chuck it in on Sunday” by the way I never seen the game😂 agreed with everything Steven said and disagreed with almost everything Alex said.

Scott Watson

Gentlemen, you know I'm a massive fan of the show but even by that standard, I thought this was a fabulous discussion - easily the best I've heard on the network or anywhere else since the weekend I thought this was an absolute model of how we can have contrasting views but give them in a balanced and constructive way. The Preview is very much Heart and Hand's answer to The Academy 😀 To avoid splinters from the fence, I'm closer to Strider's position - I really don't think any professional footballer gets up in the morning and says "I'm not bothered about this one." To get to play for Rangers you have had to scrap all your life, and these days that means since the age of 5 or 6, to be better than the guys around you, to make the cut, to get the professional deal, to keep going. I really don't think there is anybody that gets to Ibrox and is just having a bit of a laugh. What I do think is there is mental fatigue, "burnout", whatever sports science term you like - they go to the well and there just isn't as much to draw as there used to be. I think (and obviously none of us really know) that's a far more likely explanation for all of the calamitous individual errors we've seen this season than anything else - and it's those that keep costing us I also thought the discussion of recruitment was much more clear-eyed than anything I've heard recently. There has been a lot of chat since results started going in the wrong direction that we should have been spending big in the last few windows. I've heard the phrase "we've got the money from the Patterson sale, the share issue and the Gerrard compensation" a large number of times and the caveat "which all adds up to LESS than the 23 million quid loss we posted last season" precisely zero times. As always, and as Strider said, the truth is in the middle somewhere - you can't take a 23 million hit and then spend every penny of income you get but neither should you use every penny of income to cover the loss, you have to bootstrap "the model" with a responsible amount of speculate to accumulate - but I think Steven hit the nail on the head, we already spent that money last year, and the years before, on Roofe/Itten/Kent/Helander/Goldson

Scott Watson

Hard to come up with any case that we're anything other than a much lesser team without him based on the available evidence... Opportunity for Gio to come up with a plan that doesn't rely on him and Roofe/Sakala/anyone to show they can offer something different...

Gary Shaw

Don’t believe a full team chucks it but definitely believe certain individuals just don’t fancy it(I’m looking at you,Aribo)……I used to think that it was silly to use the mentality excuse but it happens to often domestically for it to be a coincidence…the fact our best season out of the last 4 came in a year were no fans were allowed into the stadiums and our rivals capitulated beyond funny goes to prove there is definitely an issue mentally….I think both Steven and Stryder are correct to a degree

Mark

He has to win this tie, if only to consolidate his position for next season ahead of what is very likely coming over the next few weeks (losing the SC SF and humiliation #2 at the piggery).

Making Strides

I'd like to point out that my point there was a wider one rather than just one game, but I can see why that wouldn't have been very clear! 😀

Martin Davies

Strider, I agree to an extent that there are some players, in fact most players, who have very fragile confidence and its not a lack of effort. But just watch Joe Aribo's performance from Sunday and tell me he's giving 100%. He was going through the motions and never ran the length of himself. It's not confidence or inconsistency. Its a lack of effort. Played a must-win Old Firm game with the intensity of a guy having a kickabout on a beach with his mates. Unforgivable. I can accept that players make mistakes, have off days, lack confidence, etc. But a lack of effort is not on.

Harold mccartney

Your definitely an optimist and pretty upbeat as me on the other hand I’m naturally a pessimist. Fair play to you for sticking your neck out with your opinion that most fans would probably disagree with.👍

Bill Jones

I’m not as confident as a 2-1 defeat, thinking more like a 3-0 loss.

David Innes

That’s along the lines of what I’m thinking too. Lose an early goal and it could well be a long night

Jordan Grant

Could not agree more regarding Aribo. I was struggling to find the words to describe the lack of effort but you found it... shameful. I'm not ready to see him tomorrow night.

David_Davy_Dave

Thank God for some sanity strider! Really enjoyed that. I wouldn’t have started Aribo but perplexed by the pile on he has suffered since Sunday and generally haven’t got the energy for articles or pods that want to tear everything up and start again. Best show on the network. Balanced and informative

George Higgins

We lost on Sunday because of two defensive errors. That’s it. We were not run over the top of. Of course we could have played better and continually punting the ball in the box was pointless. I think we can play much better. GVB has to come up with a system without Morelos. If he does that we will get to semis in Europa and the final in Scotland.

John Davidson

Far too simple to say that the players have 'chucked it' but I can see why that is the conclusion that many fans have reached when they contrast our style of play with theirs. They may only be able to sustain the high intensity for 60 minutes but that's proved to be an effective strategy we don't appear to be able to counter effectively. The edge we had on fitness has also been reversed which, added to the contrast in approach to utilising the 5 subs and squad in general, also goes some way to explain the league table. I think these are more likely explanations than the somewhat vague effort levels.

Scott Watson

Completely agree with the errors but I'm not entirely sold that the cross bombardment WAS pointless - I think there's a bit of result bias going into (everyone's) analysis. Yes, MOST of the crosses were headed away quite easily but Roofe got on the end of three or four decent balls, at least one of which he should definitely have hit the target. If one or two of those had gone in, the story becomes "our full backs have the quality to hurt teams" A system without Morelos is the key for the rest of the season (and maybe beyond...). Gerrard seemed like he had done that with Defoe-Arfield towards the end of his first season, but the latter evidence suggests that when it came to games that mattered, he didn't have a solution GVB, for all the flak he is currently getting (some of which is deserved), has shown that he is much more willing to experiment both with shape and players (there's a popular myth going around at the moment that he always plays the same players - it's just not true, go back and check the line-ups since he took over if you don't believe me) than Gerrard ever was so I have a bit of hope that he can rotate the Rubiks cube more effectively and come up with something better That's the hope, the FEAR is that it's not rotating a Rubiks cube, it's re-arranging the deck chairs on the Hindenberg

Scott Watson

Forgot to say Steven, Scatman John reference is one of your best yet 😀

Gary Brown

100% right the 2 errors cost us the game, their only real efforts were those 2, and 1 in each half again from a slack pass by us in a dangerous area in midfield. We handled their possession based attacks with ease, took possession or they mucked it up with unforced errors.

Phileas Fogg 55

Great pod lads , different opinions that I found I was agreeing with both of you 😂. However ,Alex’s positively was very refreshing and I needed that after Sunday 💙

Phileas Fogg 55

Can’t seem to change my name on the App 🤪

Doug Maclean

Loved the discussion. I have a lot of respect for Steven’s research and analysis of the opposition and really learn a lot. That said I do not think this squad is as bad as he paints. We did need to freshen the side last summer with 2 major departures and 2 quality faces. Failure to qualify for CL killed that and I also think set the scene for Stevie G leaving I love McGregor but I’d play McLaughlin for Europa and SPFL games for the rest of the season. He has signed a 2.5 year extension and we really need to test him this season. We won’t learn anything more about McGregor and he can play his last 2 games winning the Sc Cup I’d put Aribo on the bench and start with a front 3 of Kent, Sakala and Ramsey

Gary Brown

Thanks lads. Absolutely great pod, lots of excellent viewpoints from both of you. Excellent run down on Braga, very informative. Steven is the first I've heard mention the change in attitude of the crowd (the 12th man eh!?) at the equaliser and lets just say 'reduced' support after. Spot on observation!! Alex - head in the sand? happy clappy? Not in my view. I agree with everything you said about the game, players and manager. 100%!! You have me for company at least. I was at the game (sober) and have watched it back, twice! And I'd recommend any/everyone watch it again without the live match / must win tension and view it objectively as how we played football. Barring the 2 ridiculously bad goals, we were clearly the better team throughout. They had 4 chances, 2 being our defensive disaster goals and 1 chance in each half again caused by a slack / misplaced pass by us. One being the McGregor save. In possession attacking they were not a threat, we either regained possession easily by tackling them, or our pressure led to their errors & turnovers. Add in yellows not given 1st half, a free hit allowing them 'proper' yellow card fouls late in the game to disrupt play and no 2nd yellow/red. Plus them all falling down with cramp at every opportunity meaning more disruption. Despite 5 subs they were blowing out their arse the last 30 mins. This shows they could drop points. We didn't just continuously throw aimless crosses in, also tried ground attack. But like with so many opponents, 10 men behind the ball is difficult to play through. The assessment / display of them all season has been 'weak in defence at centre half and suspect at crosses' - so a perfectly valid tactic. Their defence had a good / lucky day eg the 3 solid penalty claims. Roofe was generally doubled up on, however we have him (& Gio tactics) to thank for 4 pts gained v Aberdeen & Dundee instead of 2 - which would've put us in a worse position even if winning Sunday's game!! "Players chucked it" has been used a fair bit across all platforms & chat since Sun. I disagree. May not have been good enough but still trying at 90+ mins. Take the 2 howlers for the goals out and that was every bit as good a performance as the 1-0 last time at home. The skelp taken at Sharkhead is still fresh in people's minds, this game was not like that. Yes the result is like a critical injury, it is not over until it is over!
