After a short trip to A&E Martyn is back with his epic account of the greatest era in the history of Rangers FC. David and Alan join him this week and they have plenty to discuss. Rangers were taught two lessons by the Bayern Munich defeat but would only follow through with one, Souness agreed to be Manchester United manager before David Murray had other ideas, a lacklustre cup final, more indifferent league form before the goal that started a spiral and an emotional goodbye to wee Ray.

Memory from the Bayern tie.....standing in the Enclosure giving "Rambo" the expected banter pre match. "Rambo" walking off at HT giving us banter back....Like David European football for me as a kid was not fun!

That Johnston goal was the sweetest moment of madness I've ever experienced at Ibrox! The East Enclosure was absolute carnage! 😂🇬🇧

A fascinating discussion in the first half hour about the Euro performances through the entire period. We failed far too often and we can reason, or even make excuses, about how the game is played in Scotland, but other leagues with success like Sweden and Belgium found ways when competing with the top tier teams despite the issues they faced against weaker opposition. I don't imagine GIF Sundsvall or Västra Frölunda played a particular pleasant brand of football in the mid 80s against Gothenburg. Even with us having to win domestically as David points out, there were too many Euro failures, consistently, for it not to be a failing to address it year after year. Even in the good year of 92/93, the reason we didn't get to the final was three individual errors punished immediately - Gough missing a ridiculous header in the 1st half, the Pressley shambles which put them two up and Davie Robertson failing to be able to kick a ball 20 yards with his right foot in the away tie. It was the same story again and again. The style of Scottish football was an issue but it's not the reason we conceded those three goals as an example. Now, our battling qualities are to be lauded for how we got back in to both those games but not being able to win them came because of those mistakes and being behind initially.

The argument about teams from other smaller countries doing well in Europe is the same as the Dundee United 87 one and Souness’s counter to that is valid: they’re not under the same pressure week by week as Rangers were. To build a side in 1986 capable of winning those weekly battles was not conducive to a totally different approach on the odd Wednesday night. The question for me is when was that battle over and therefore when could and should we have started to move forward in a different way. I think there’s a fair shout that it should have been right then. Individual errors were costly throughout this period too - BM, Steaua and Cologne all had them - but in Souness’s defence, Rangers never went out to a poor side. This wasn’t the 90s. You always need a bit of luck in the draw and 89 and 90 were brutal.

Yeah, there's absolute merit in Dundee Utd having time to make their changes domestically to play. I'd put Mechelen in that bracket for sure. I'd need to check but did Gothenburg not win the league the year they won the Uefa too though? I'd imagine between them and Malmo there was a constant pressure to win their league too but they got the balance right twice to win tournaments and looking at their Euro exploints in general from 1980 to the late 90s, they far exceeded what we managed and still had a good run of league victories along with it. I guess they got that balance right and that's the point you're making about Souness not doing so. A certain "what if?" I do remember my old man groaning every time the draw was about to be made saying "we'll get a German team" We've had a right rotten set of draws going way back to the start of Euro football right enough. The number of times we'd draw the eventual winners must rival anyone else. Would have been nice to knock at least one of them out and go on to success ourselves though.

Dundee Utd might argue they were handicapped by Scottish Football as well; a 44 game league season and a run to the Scottish Cup final can't have helped when it came to their UEFA Cup final in 1987.

I wish we had signed Hans Gilhaus. What a player he was.

Love this series…it’s funny the wee things that stick in your head and MoJos curved run after he scored is one of those things for me….never forget as a budding young wannabe footballer myself that my Da would always tell me to study Johnstons movement…great player

First class as always gentlemen I'd never heard about the near miss with Man U, what a sliding doors moment

Souness has balls made of steel. Can you imagine the reaction if he had taken the Man Utd job? That he even considered it is mad enough - that it almost came to pass is just plain crackers.

As a more recent patron it's taken me a wee while to listen to all the earlier episodes. Its somewhat irrelevant to add a comment retrospectively in each episode but now I've caught up I just want to place one GREAT BIG MASSIVE THANK YOU to Martyn and all the other contributing podders involved for this and all the earlier episodes of this absoultely wonderful series. Such wonderful discussion & opinion guys. It is far more than simply talking about football history. My formative years follow following (1979-85) were obviously bleak on the football, results & trophy front. Quite frankly as a teenager then with mass unemployment, redundancies abound & traditional local industry in decline, the whole future looked bleak with no chance of improvement for me and a whole lot of others. This period in Rangers history gave escape, joy, hope & inspiration to thousands of fans. Thanks again for this series and looking forward to the upcoming episodes.
