Shane and David are back in the fourth episode of their Watergate at 50 series for a look at the Greatest Show on Earth: the 1973 Senate Watergate Committee Hearings.

Meet the Simple Country Lawyer chosen to head the Senate's inquiry into the Nixon White House, an incredible jurist and orator (and a staunch segregationist) whose daily hearings ended up in the homes of nearly 85% of Americans during the spring and summer of 1973. Plus, John Dean goes on the attack after accepting he was to be the scapegoat; Republicans plot against him with the help of Nixon's team; but a Bob Haldeman aide reveals what Dean had by then believed for months - that he was being secretly taped in the White House.

Really enjoying this series which is surprisingly because I didn't know Watergate was a thing also don't follow politics I only listened to the first episode to broaden my horizons and I'm glad I did keep up the good work information with a dash of comedy

PR__92

You could use informational with a dash of comedy for a review on your posters if you ever made a documentary 😂

Shane

We're just a simple Rangers podcast, doing our best to entertain the audience with the story of the biggest political scandal ever.

Jimmy Price

This series is brilliant guys, well done 👍🏻 👏👏 I’ve now bought the Charles Ferguson documentary Watergate. Looking forward to watching it.

Shane

Yeah, I can't do those sorts of docs. There was some WW1 one I started the other day that does that shit and I got about an episode in and bailed it.

Heart and Hand

The guy playing Nixon is a bit over the top. One of the things about the tapes is how matter-of-fact they are discussing these huge crimes!

Shane

I couldn't believe the news when we got done earlier that Caan had passed.

Adam

Bit of an aside, not actually dived into this yet. Who wins in a drinking contest, Shane or Nixon?

Heart and Hand

Shane would annihilate him. Nixon was a two can dan - couple drinks and he was absolutely steamboats.

Simon

Wow. Biggest revelation for me, Sesame Street was on in 1973. I had no idea. 1969 it started apparently. Who knew? Not me.

Mark Brown

Really enjoying these pods. Educational and entertaining at the same time. 👏👏

AGS

“Presbyterian ministers, at least they were on the right side”! 🤠🤠🤠

Shane

Just gonna leave a open comment here for anyone who's got any questions from the first four episodes. ❓❓

Colin Greenshields

I was a big fan of All The Presidents Men back in the day and this series has seriously rekindled my interest. Excellent work guys, much appreciated.

Shane

Just fyi: I did misspeak in here at one point where I back-referenced Dean's last two solo meetings with Nixon--I said "May" the second time when obviously I meant March. Also worth noting that while Nixon was trying to send Dean to Camp David to write his self-incriminating report, he was doing so full of the knowledge that CD also had the same automatic taping system installed in its working rooms.

Bill McCairns

Great series. It’s amazing how much I can recall listening to you talking. I have a memory of a southern accented man during the hearings talking about how much he loved his Country. This must have been Irvine I guess. Looking forward to the next episode.

Gary Brown

Another great episode, thanks David & Shane. Phenomenally interesting & intriguing. But at the same time its ridiculous that when stripped down to the facts the 'leader of the free world' and his office ran the same defence tactics as a 5yr old caught nicking sweets!! Loved the Cookie Monster clip BTW 🤣

Luca Brasi

Loving this show it’s clear from the enthusiasm in your voices when discussing this really is a passion for you both. It’s educational so thank you both.

Heart and Hand

It’s just great that people are kind enough to listen. My wife just rolls her eyes and leaves the room whenever I get out my flip-charts.

Craig Watson

The hunt for red October...I know I knew the name Fred Thomson

Craig Watson

Oh and by the way you both have ruined my YouTube feed.🤣

Shane

Should have it for ya sometime Wednesday. I got a little covered up at work the past week-plus.
