News tonight that a deal has been agreed with Ajax.

I’m reliably informed it’s €22m, €5m in add-ons and a 10% sell-on.

That latter part will, I think, be worth a fair chunk.

He’ll be a big miss but for a guy signed for £230,000 and who only became a regular midway through last season, it’s a big deal.

Paul Graham

Great deal for everyone involved, Good luck Calvin

Alan Coleman

Great deal for all concerned. Are the add ons guaranteed or dependent on appearances?

Steven L

Just can’t turn that down, shame really enjoyed watching the big man last season.

Grant Sneddon

Going to miss the big man, however what a class act he has been. More importantly crucial for our next stage of development that we got this sort of fee and the sell on clause is brilliant.

Steven McGall

Gutted to see him go but cracking bit of business from the club!

Neil Fox

Personally I thought the fee would be higher, especially if you've got a number if teams involved But it's how the "player trading model" should work at its best. Also possibly a lower fee as clubs are also feeling the pinch after covid Before covid the fee would have probably been higher

Luke

Huge profit but big loss to the playing squad. So much power and pace, ajax will be a great place for him to develop. Good luck to the big guy. Feel pleased to have witnessed his last 2 games in a rangers shirt, both tremendous performances.

David Young

Incredible bit of business.

Dale Johnstone

Are add ons in addition to €22mil or included within?

Ross

Thanks for the update David. Gutted to see him go, but what a deal. Race against the clock for CL qualifiers so I am happy we got a good deal and equally happy for Calvin, busy week ahead

Alan Shaw

A shame to see him go. But its the way things are. Wish him all the best , let's sign a new left back

Jordan McKay

To sell a player for 100 times more than you got him is ridiculous business.

Cary Grayson

The best is yet to come, Ajax are getting a real talent. Thanks big man, for all you’ve done. Go get ‘em Calvin

William Black

Will follow his career wherever he goes. He has the potential to be one of European football’s best defenders and is a massively likeable guy. The type that’s in football for football, wish him nothing but the absolute best career he can make for himself.

David adams

Fantastic bit of business by the club , of course we will miss the big man .

Ross Matheson

Shame to see him go. For us, it's right to sell at this point. Wish him all the best. Hope to see him in the Champions League at Ibrox this season.

Graeme McLeod

Hope we actually sign someone to replace him rather than another youth loanee or journeyman. Bassey was excellent last season at both centre back and left back, and we'll be lucky to get 30 games out of Souttar, Helander is constantly injured and even if he reproduces his best form we need more than Borna.

Brian Moore

Nothing about the kid, from the day he walked in the door can I fault. He’s a credit to his family. A wonderful human and a great role model. All the best Calvin we will be watching closely. ❤️🤍💙

David Clapperton

Great deal and best wishes to the kid. As well as being brilliant on the pitch last season, Patterson and him have now smashed through a ceiling for sales that will change our transfer dealings, in and out, for years to come. Glad he chose Ajax and excited to see what he becomes. He’ll go even bigger yit. 👍🏻

Scott Watson

Do we know if that's 10% of the next sale price or 10% of any profit?

aldo adens

Great deal for the club but apart from guaranteed champions league i dont think the move to the eredivise is really much of a step up. Still see him in a few years going to the epl or bundesliga for a fair few quid.

Alastair Woodford

He played with a lot of heart. They’re getting a top athlete with potential to improve. Great to see us making a profit that will help with financial stability. All the best big man!

Rona Bluebell

Noooo. Sad to see him go. Understand it’s business but would rather he stayed.

Martin Davies

Always sad to see a good player move but this is brilliant for both club and player. Best of luck to Calvin, he'll always be welcomed back with open arms.

stephen

Another player I will genuinely miss and that speaks volumes for the lad himself. Great business, to be fair spectacular business.

Ross

Ridiculous. In my opinion the board have cheaped out on this deal. I feel really let down that they didn't hold out for a scottish record fee.

Stuart Sheils

Sorry to geek out, but I’m pretty sure that’s worth more to us than if we sold to England- there won’t be VAT on international transfers whereas there is within the U.K. so in effect we’re no worse off than selling him for £22m up front to England. Still on the low side of what we were aiming for but 100% the right time to sell with contract and form etc.

M

It's either 12 v 18.5 or 16 v 23 if you are comparing like for like.

Zander West

Cracking business from the club, this is the model we are operating so we just have to get used to it,, big Bassey done us good,, and it only makes us stronger, good luck to the lad, will follow his career with intrest

Stuart Sheils

Yeah I’ve looked into it- no VAT on international deals 👍🏻

Craig Mcwhinnie

Great deal for the club, hope the add ons are achievable, sky really is the limit for him, gutted to see him go but we must reinvest a % of the money, a new LB is a must now

Andrew Hind

Will miss the big fella, but good business and he will go on to bigger and better things in future

Andrew Hind

Will miss the big fella, but good business and he will go on to bigger and better things in future

Ian McManus

Feels a little bit light in terms of the fee given his exposure… but his value is determined by what a club is willing to pay so it is what it is. It’s an incredible illustration of how the model can work. Well done to Ross Wilson and Stevie G for bringing him in and to Gio for making a raw left back a 20 million pound player.

Doug

Sad to see him go but it's an excellent return on investment. He'll be a miss as he was not just a great talent but a great lad too. We need to go out and reinvest in another LB now, be that a starter or someone who like Bassey, will really challenge Borna for the shirt (particularly given his inevitable dips in form). It may also give us a little extra for someone else too, though I'd also be ok with us absorbing some of the cash as COVID impact balance or future proofing the coffers should we decide we want to keep Tillman.

Glenn Butler

Wilson Out!! Sorry, wrong thread 🤷🏻‍♂️😜

Graham McCallum

Superb bit of business we’ve basically pulled in £40+ million for Bassey and Patterson for a total of 62 appearances. 😊

Ally Stewart

The boy deserves nothing but the best, he has been an absolute credit to our football club.

Gordon Masterton

Great bit of business He'll be a big miss both on the field and off it the big mans got a great attitude. But this is the model and there is no way we can turn money like that down

Stewart Marshall

Gutted the big man’s going to be on his way but wish him nothing but the best. Skys the limit with the level of talent he’s got.

Alan Russell

Bassey was a revelation in the Europa league run, but selling makes sense when the demand is high.

Alan Russell

So that’s £16.5mil for Patterson, £23mil for Bassey, Bisgrove said commercial contracts have beaten the target of £29mil, europa league run approx £34mil, Gerrard money £5mil. £107.5 mil in total. Waw

Rona Bluebell

I think the fee is quoted in euros so more like 19 million sterling.

Alan Bradley

Methinks the trading model has now been effectively implemented. Great piece of business.

Russell Jones

Incredible, and sad at the same time; what a pleasure it was watching him develop over the course of the last few years. It is an amazing bit of business for Ajax too though. Sell one centre half for £40million+; get in another multi talented replacement for half the cash. I felt he was worth more and might attract a bigger English team, but then I am biased! Good luck to Calvin; great player and a great lad. 🔴⚪️🔵

Graham Jones

It’s a bit low to be honest, but if that’s what the board are happy with then I guess we have to go along with it. We need them to step up now and start investing in the first team. We’ve offloaded a lot of talent so far, and maybe there will be more going this window. The first team has lost a bit of lustre, and while these new recruits to polish over several seasons are good and fine, they need some help with a bit of quality. Developing talent and making money is nice, but winning trophies is what we do, at the end of the day.

Craig Burrows

I love the lad and wish nothing but the best for him. I hope when we reach our next European final he is one of those ex players who randomly turns up in the main square to support. He seems that kind of lad. I feel ajax may take him to another level and if they do we make more cash. If they don't this was a great deal.

David McCulloch

Sad to see him go! It was an absolute pleasure watching him charge down the wing and see him progress so much. All the best Calvin Bassey, what a player 👏

Danny Clark

A big loss to the team but great for both financially and to show others the potential pathway that Rangers can give them.

chris smith

Bailed to the first bid is a bit disappointing tbh …

bluedan1873

Don't get me wrong, that's a great deal but that came quickly. It's been widely reported there were several interested clubs and the ol 'bidding war' was about to start but it's over before it started really, or seems that way. I was hopeful of a lot more back and fourth between clubs to drive up the price.

Luke

Any news on replacements?

Kevin Blyth

I’ll be very sad to see him go. Think he’d have been even better this season. But it’s business like this that will let us go on to greater things. The model is working! And isn’t technology marvellous as I’m replying to this at 40,000 feet on the way to Singapore from Auckland! 😁

Heart and Hand

I don’t think a long-drawn out saga would be beneficial. All the other interested clubs would be notified of the price so they could have come in with more.

Andrew Hillis

Really disappointing fee in my opinion! What exactly are we doing with the money? We have significantly weakened the team today! Don’t get the enthusiasm for the deal! Just keep him and we make more money from progress in Europe. Underwhelming

Alan

You’re nuts pal 😂 guy who signed for 200k has been flipped for a fee reaching 27m Eur with a 10% sell on and you think we’d make more money keeping him and running into last year of his deal?

John Davidson

It's both humbling and simultaneously encouraging to lose a player to Ajax for such a large fee. Humbling, because it underlines our place in the food chain, where we can lose players not just to the big 5 leagues but to smaller European countries as well. Encouraging, ironically, because it shows that large, well-run clubs outside of the big 5 leagues can, despite the decks being stacked against us, compete by successfully implementing a different financial model, with youth development and player-trading at its heart. The blueprint we must follow. Best of luck Calvin and thanks for the memories.

Neil McWhirter

That is amazing business all the best bassey lad! And yes I will be buying a fake ajax top with bassey on the back for me and my sons.

Blairo

Great business but felt we could have squeezed a bit more out the deal. In any case hopefully get some of the funds for the war chest

Trev @JimmyBell_Loyal

Hmmm dunno about this. That’s only £18.7M instead of the 25M we were looking for. I know the whole package is worth over 25M but taking away the 10% sell on free it’s still short of that 25M up front

Andrew Hillis

Not nuts pal - just ambitious!😜 I am mostly raging as I just bought three Bassey Bucket Hat tee shirts from Club 22 merch site for me and my two sons! 🤣🤣

Steve Clark

It’s a outstanding bit of business by the club and don’t think young talented players in England won’t take notice of Calvin and Joe getting big moves after coming to Rangers and nailing down a first team place and where it can take you.i wish Calvin nothing but the best and when he’s playing at either psg,the big two in Spain or one of the top four in the epl.we will all say “that is our boy Calvin”

Douglas Hannah

Outstanding deal for Rangers, looking at 27mil with the add ons, that will be achieved, and we all know with Ajax past record they will flip him for over double that in two or three years max, earning us a tidy 10% sell on. Ross Wilson deserves credit for the business he’s done these last few weeks.

Rod

I don't think it's an exaggeration to say this deal following on from aribo and patterson puts the club in its strongest financial position in 25 years.

Stuart Harrison

Seeing some comments on how we should ‘spend’ the cash we have supposedly made in the last 6-12 months. As a long time supporter I look at this as a European ‘purple patch’ rather than a new normal - Defeats to Cologne ( 5-0 )was what I grew up with. I think I am in the majority when I suggest we should not be spending large sums on individual players. How about we use the cash to increase the wage structure at Ibrox which should allow us to keep our big players and attract others we previously couldn’t afford? Just think how this would have worked in the David Murray era.

stefan strzelecki

I thank Calvin for his contribution to our club that has led to these heady heights of finance for the club too. However, I reserve the right to say as a a supporter .I never want any Rangers player to stay if his aspirations or focus is elsewhere. How anyone can ever envisage a betterment that compliments their financial future and sporting desire to be a winner , is a genuine mystery to me. Rangers are everything to me. The fa t he wants to join Ajax is just plain weird to me.
