And so, the greatest ever season begins. David and Alan are with Martyn to take the temperature of Scottish football in the summer of 1992 with the European Championships, the proposed breakaway Scottish Super League, the Paul McStay fiasco and a relatively quiet summer in the market. After a bad start Rangers were shaken out of their slumber by a dressing room fight...

I remember being underwhelmed with our pre season signings and thinking we were going backwards. How wrong was I.

John Palmer

The jersey from this Season is one of my All time faves, only issue is I don't have one 😔

Just to comment on the preamble to the season. I was in Sweden following Scotland in 1992. Hugely enjoyed it. Bittersweet to think about now as things are so much more politicised. Back then I recall mingling with Hibs and Hearts fans in particular, though overall club allegiances were an afterthought as it was all about Scotland. Never came across any of our friends in the east but of course they were much more aligned with the ROI. They have only recently climbed on the TA bandwagon.

Was Gary Stevens injured at this point?

Alan Bradley

Mostly, only played 9 league and 1 cup game that season. Pretty regular 93/94 season before his transfer to Tranmere Rovers in September 94.

Rob Shorthouse

The greatest of them all. The entire season is an absolute joy.

Martyn Ramsay

Was injured in that early league game against Airdrie. Tbh I don’t think he ever properly recovered

Callum Dinnen

Yeah I associate McCall with the number 2 jersey because of this season which I'm assuming is because McPherson wore 5 and played a lot at right back

Other thing I meant to ask was about the 44 game league season. Why was that introduced in 1986 and again in 1991? I seem to remember it getting lots of criticism as a format at the time and in hindsight it's surely a factor in Dundee Utd's defeat in the 87 UEFA Cup final (and I think we would be citing it as a factor if we'd made the final in 1993). It gets ditched fairly quickly in 1988 so who's bright idea was it to bring it back and surely this move wasn't popular?

Martyn Ramsay

More clubs wanted to milk the cash cow that the Rangers Revolution had generated really. It really wasn’t a factor in their defeat as it would have been ours as they were not troubling the title in any meaningful way. They could approach the grind of a long season in a different way than Rangers could.

Callum Dinnen

They weren't troubling the title but I doubt Dundee Utd had a big squad that could spread the burden of a 44 game season, a run to the UEFA Cup final and a run to the Scottish Cup final. Particularly when squad management and rotation isn't really a thing - did McLean not use a ridiculously small number of players the year they won the title?

Gary Brown

Thanks again Martyn, David & Alan. Just loving this series.

Paul Dunnachie

He was injured ahead of the Euros playing for England and I was surprised when I checked there to see he has a couple of runs of game this season - my memory was that he was out of the picture entirely. McPherson was brought in as some kind of cover for him for sure.
