After one wet November evening, nothing was ever the same again. The Champions League had arrived and Rangers deservedly took their place at the top table. The World Soccer awards, the Scottish Super League, glory and tragedy for Scott Nisbet are all discussed by Martyn, Alan and David are all discussed as the ball kept on rolling...

The postponed Utd game was my 8th birthday and I was gutted it was called off, but the scarf I got as a present is still my game day scarf 30 years later!

Steve Clark

Davie Cooper was a pundit on the stv coverage and he said after the game “rangers name is on this trophy”

I think the stand out for all that feeling of this new shiny futuristic competition was the fact we felt as if we belonged right in amongst it. 18 years old, off to University, this was just the season of seasons to me & don’t think it will ever be topped. I had to get that out there as I also have a rather curmudgeonly outlook that we rode our luck hugely throughout the campaign on both fronts, which you’ve more than alluded to in this episode. But wow, it was just incredible!! I missed the Marseille match but went to the other 2 home games; the Bruges match being as bizarre as the Moscow match was rotten. I was in the Main Stand in line with the 6 yard box and I’ve never seen a ball change direction like that (notwithstanding the pitches at Livingston & Kilmarnock). I must admit I thought at that point we had as good a chance as any time!

Is there any reason why 91/92 isn’t referred to as the first champions league, as it had the same new format? Is it merely down to the livery?

Scott Christian

I watched The Football Years documentary last week which I hadn’t previously seen, worth a look as a good accompaniment to this chapter of the series. It’s on YouTube https://youtu.be/vMN4oC4HHXI

It was basically used as a trial so didn’t have all the branding. One other wee note on that, the 93 final wasn’t referred to as a CL final for a few years. The group stage was known as the Champions League in 92/93 but the final just the European Cup Final.

I was supposed to travel over from Northern Ireland for the brugge match at Ibrox but was ill so didn't get to go and my dad brought me back a goalkeepers shirt as compensation which as a 10 year old wannabe goalkeeper was brilliant but now as an adult I am raging I could have been there to witness that Nisbet goal

Excellent show, as usual. We are absolutely at the stage now where I'm fully aware of everything that's going on at Rangers due to the increased TV coverage down here, it's nice to be able to listen and fall back on my own memories of the time.

Words cannot express how much I love this show, so good. I remember my brother had the videotape for the Champions League Review, not sure if it’s available on YouTube now but was tremendous. Remember the adverts for Ford, Continental & Snickers at the start of it! Seeing a young Arthur Numan in the PSV side on the other half of the group & of course Van Basten’s overhead kick & hat trick against Gothenburg. I watched it so many times until the tape started melting! So jealous that you guys lived through this & experienced it. The commentary from Brian Moore for this run is so iconic as well I think.

A question whilst I'm listening to this. David mentions Abedi Peli and how good he was. How on earth do Marseille end up with such a good squad? It's Marseille!! Even then they weren't a sexy team. Now they probably get better players than they deserve because of this period but they're basically an average French mob who once had one of the best squads in Europe.

Great show. Fantastic to be a gers fan. I was in bochum. Great trip .

A little harsh on them as a club as only St Etienne were way ahead in France at the time. But yeah, not unlike us, charisma, money and stated ambition made them attractive in the second half of the 80s. Unlike us, they were based in the south of France, which didn’t hurt either!

Martyn Ramsay

Thank you for your kind appreciation. I hope you continue to enjoy it. It’s trivial but I’m so glad that this run was captured by Brian Moore as we really were the only British interest in European football by the time the CL started. In terms of British status, this is probably our highest point since Struth.

Mark

Outstanding, Gentlemen. Just for a short time, I felt like I was back there, living it again.

Gary Brown

Thanks again Martyn for this episode of your wonderful series, ably assisted by David & Alan, thanks lads. The Impossible Dream? Yes. But in the fans reality, at that point, we were LIVING the dream. Big Nizzy 🙂. A great servant to the club. Just LOVE this show. ps - as much as I love this iconic kit like so many of us do (even the younger bears) I was always kind of disappointed we didn't follow the adidas template like Marseille, Liverpool, etc. ⬜🟥⬜ stripes on the shoulder to chest and 🟦🟥🟦 on the shorts - the episode pic just reminded me of that, amongst the many, many wonderful memories this series evokes.

That game at Parkhead was my first ever Celtic away game, atmosphere aside which I thought was great despite the result my overriding memory of it was trying to exit up the terracing and the bottle neck at that green barrier before you went down the stairs, the crush there was incredible, I don’t know how many fans they said were in, but we had at least double what should have been in that stand, it was horrendous.

Lee Colvin

I think that was the first big flag day at Parkhead that was advertised on FF.

Andrew Lees

Wonderful series of shows and fantastic listening. The contributions from the guys are always fascinating. I think you may have missed an opportunity to describe the Marseille coach as "wily"...i don't think Goethals, or Guy Thys and Guy Roux were allowed to be named without that being added.

Martyn Ramsay

I’ve described him like that in the book because it’s a legal clause that I can’t get out of. Simply has to be done.

Allan Osborne

I loved the paper version of FF back in the day. The Govanhill Gub, The Diary of The Downhill Hack etc, essential reading along with The Rangers Historian and, to a lesser extent, Aye Ready and The Blues Brothers. Another great episode guys that I thoroughly enjoyed. It's weird, because I can remember almost every game you discuss in this series, even though it's 30 years ago and more, yet on the Ally show I can only recall a handful of them (which is probably just as well, I guess it's some kind of defence mechanism 😁). Looking forward to the next one.
