Treble cheers and European tears as the most famous season in Rangers history comes to an end. Tapie's interventions, the McCoist and Hateley partnership, the importance of the Treble and Andy getting punched by his dad are all on the table this week.

What a season, went to every home and away game( apart from Europe) and will live with me forever.

On Marseille, I've always thought the 6-0 stank. Was there not a suggestion that the CSKA players had been poisoned - it might be a false memory but I seem to remember us making a big deal about taking our own catering team to France to avoid the same thing happening to us? The Brugges goal they concede on match day 6 has always stunk to high heaven. On the balance of probabilities I would have no issue believing Marseille bought their way to the final; but obviously not enough concrete evidence has ever been found to take their title off them.

Lewis Wardrope

My old man told me a story about him and his pal faking an injury to go to the first aid room, in order to get out the Celtic end and get into the Rangers end at Hampden. They never punched each other on the nose though😂

I just watched the 18 mins highlights of the CSKA home game to refresh my memory, can I just say FF’S MCoist 😳😂 We didn’t take care of business against CSKA when we should have but there were points I think that stink in the league section, Bruges conceded a goal which I will never be convinced wasn’t a set up. As for Hateley he has a big mouth about a new striker but didn’t mention being approached at the time, don’t believe it. Marseille should have been shown the door after Tappie went into the referees room . It probably still goes on but a bit more subtly.

Callum Dinnen

Yeah I don't believe Hateley's claims for a second. Why wait 20 years to make that public?

Stephen Rankine

Never knew about Tapie going into refs room at ht when we played them away, that was a revelation alright. Such a shame we only had 1 of our best strike partnerships ever available for just under 2 1/2 games out of 6 in the section.

Callum Dinnen

It was skipped over but I'll always remember the sense of shock I felt when I flicked on Teletext and saw that Rangers were losing 3-0 to Partick Thistle, because as someone who came of age in terms of following Rangers in 91/92, and particularly 1992, I just wasn't used to the idea Rangers lost games; we certainly didn't lose games 3-0.

Graham Roy

Andy’s story is one of best I have heard! 😂

Callum Dinnen

I just kept refreshing the Teletext page because I was sure that there must have been some mistake!

Absolutely brilliant show. My 2nd season with an ST and what a journey it was. I thought the chances were slim after the match in Marseille and so it proved. I'll never forget the reaction of the fans after the CSKA match, not one person left Ibrox to salute the team on their efforts. Just a shame we never really built on the success during the summer. We needed to sign a player like Laudrup to bring us a better attacking edge. Instead we broke the British transfer record for a striker who wasn't as good as the player in possession of the jersey. Looking forward to next week's show.

I didn’t think Ferguson played enough games to qualify for a league championship medal in Advocaat’s first season?

Scott Christian

I might be getting confused with the following season right enough as double checked and he went to Dunfermline in 2000. I know the league only dished out a limited number back then though.

I recall a story that the CSKA team suffered mass food poisoning & there being some chat about their meals being tampered with. I’ve little doubt that Tapie would have tried it on in multiple games, but agree that it was absolutely on us that we didn’t qualify for the final. A good point made by John around the bad luck perhaps cancelling out the couple of flukey goals scored, didn’t really consider that previously (you make your own luck as the captain constantly said). Another excellent & thoroughly enjoyable discussion & great memories from the Greatest Season. McCoist’s injury perhaps the pivoting point in the entire 90s as well as the manifest demonstration of the side’s journey after this moment; he never really recovered to stay fit for more than handfuls of games in a row but kept popping up with great moments.

John McMillan

yeah - that food poisoning thing, and Rangers taking their own catering staff... no idea if it's true or not, but I certainly have the same memories about all of that.

Callum Dinnen

I'll be curious to hear the takes on the Duncan Ferguson transfer because it's easy to judge it with the benefit of knowing it doesn't work out. With the discussion in the first episode around Scotland's Euro 92 efforts I actually went back and looked at the squad to see if there were any players we'd missed out on that I'd forgotten about. There's 2 young players in the squad under the age of 23 - Alan McLaren and Duncan Ferguson, who we of course end up signing so we're still committing ourselves to the best young Scottish talent. With McCoist out injured and Hateley turning 32 there is a clear need for Ferguson IMO - we'd call it succession planning now.

Scott Christian

Should have read before posting my own comment! Definitely remember the taking own catering and lots of talk about dodgy goings on following the CSKA players being ill.

Martin Davies

I do agree that I'm looking back with the benefit of hindsight Callum. And it's maybe fair to say that Hateley upped his game to an even higher level after Dunc signed. Alan McLaren was just really unlucky with injury, and probably harmed his career by playing when he shouldn't during 9IAR. However, even if that team somehow remained fit and carried their form into 93/94, we were still lacking that bit of serious quality middle to front. And the signings of Dunc and McLaren were the long term successors to Hateley and Gough/Brown rather than upgrading the 11.

Thanks again Martyn for this wonderful episode ending to a wonderful season and thanks to Andy & John for their contributions. As good as it was and as historic as it was, for me whenever I think of this season it is not the successes I think of first it is 'Fkin cheating b@$tards Marseille' - not that I'm bitter 😆 Then I think of all the good that was done - it was very nice to reminiscence about this period again via your discussions. Thanks again guys. Brilliant show as usual.
