Good questions about Davies.I would like to think he would get a start on Saturday.

Was the download feature that was missing for Android users rectified ? I deleted the Patreon App then reinstalled it and Download function reappeared ..... just in case it hasn't been mentioned

Another team in this city lost 0-3 last week and we're hailed as world beaters. If red card doesn't happen maybe he scores or McGregor saves. Who knows. I know we went toe to toe with Seria A leaders and were in the game longer than that mob last week. I'm beyond proud of the Union Bears last night, proud of the players and Gio last night. Saturday will come but last night we got the performance we all wanted. I'm still frustrated at the Board/Wilson. Sands needs to be taken out of defence although I understand Gio's reluctance to play Davies based on how much time Goldson has likely not played with Davies in training.

Love that song.😁

I just noticed it's back. Brilliant, I download and listen too later and don't always have data/wifi.

Great pod, isn’t the key difference in Scotland really just that we are reluctant to put guys in for the baptism of fire that they desperately need? We were happy to fire in a 19 year old Colombian but won’t do it with our own? Teams in EPL throw guys in, Billy Gilmour was too young for us but played for Chelsea etc. to me it’s not rocket science or a system failure it’s just we are unwilling to actually play youth.

Rona Bluebell

9 starts from early Gerrard? Jeez, that’s worrying. Mon the B team.

Roddy John Murray

Great pod as per usual. I hope that your back pain eases soon!

Furries on Heart and Hand. I can die happy.

Re the kids I think it's time we took a risk and started to blood 1 or 2 kids in each and every game. We all know the ceiling for guys like Borna, Jack, Wright, maybe even Kent, and really shouldn't be relying on the likes of Davis and Arfield. We don't know what the ceiling is for Tillman, Yilmaz, Lowry, McCann, King and Devine. Time to get them some serious game time and see if they can take us through the ceiling of the current incumbents. Players at 21-22 should be starting to establish themselves in the first team. We consider homegrown players at 23-24 to be kids. At this age, they should be fixtures in the first team with 70+ appearances under their belt.

Simon

Is that a Super Furries debut? Can’t remember another.

Dougie

Yaaaaassss Peterborough mentioned on the DU 🤣🤣😎😎🤣🤣

Pre game last night was spinetingling and all credit to the UB and everyone in the stadium. I would however like to see the end of the "no surrender" add on. We have a perfectly good song that encapsulates that phrase, there is no need to shoehorn it into the National Anthem too.

Heart and Hand

Yes it is, they annoy me generally but that’s a tune. Wife adores them which probably puts me off a bit 😀

Lewis Wardrope

As to your point David around the next step needed for our youngsters so they don’t tail off at 20/21 year old, is promotion/relegation for the B teams. Look at Holland, Spain, Germany etc. Ajax, PSV, Utrecht have B teams in the second tier. Dortmund have their B team in the third tier and I’m sure Bayern did at some point too. Our B teams are playing in the equivalent of the 5th tier. The jump from playing in that league to the top flight and European football is too much

Heart and Hand

That’s a good shout. Also in these countries, if the youngsters don’t make it into the first teams in those countries, they go to other clubs with that experience and thus strengthen the league.

Simon

What you been listening to recently? I stumbled on to Half Mile Harvest, by The Teskey Brothers and can’t stop listening to it. That’s not a recommendation by the way. You 100% shouldn’t listen to it.

Heart and Hand

That’s exactly the way to get me yes 😂 Listening to a lot of chamber pop recently - new Stars album, Jens Lekman, Beirut etc.

Billy Brotherston

Regarding how we promote youth players in Scotland, should the fact the manager gave a young 18 year old centre half a chance on merit last night before a new signing no be applauded?

Gary Brown

Thanks for the update David. As for the youngsters, it may be a combination of not getting the opportunities to progress at bigger 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 clubs plus the 'made it' attitude if on decent enough money for a decent lifestyle in 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿, so no need to move for better opportunities.

Heart and Hand

Shouldn’t we question why then if we had King ready to go we spent 25% of our budget on a player for that position rather than midfield?

Billy Brotherston

Oh I think we should question our whole recruitment strategy, I don’t think manager will open up on it in public though but his team selection last night sent a bit of a message on it. Just saying that for me, it’s good to see Gio trusting youth in a game of that importance.

Heart and Hand

I’m a square peg/square hole guy and would prefer to see Leon start ahead of midfielders at CB. I also think we lose a lot from middle when Lundstram drops back.

Andrew straiton

Couldn’t agree more we can’t complain about youth development if we then complain or question why our young players are used in the team. If they are good enough play them.

Alan Murdoch

As long as the new mic doesn't make you sound like Allan McInally...

Spoon

Manager gives King shot last Night and we are complaining a half fit guy isn’t in team. I get the question over signing a guy and not playing him, that’s valid but possibly like a few others who have come in it takes more than a month or two to get up to speed with pace of game or come back from injury. I also find the dichotomy of raving about how this is a unique club, the jersey is heavy, it’s a club unlike most in terms of pressure while simultaneously asking after a few months why guys aren’t up to speed and putting out their best! Fans are entitled to complain but sometimes I think we are a bit contrary.

Spoon

Which again I get annoys some people for me it’s more about playing out from the back and I see it as a more attacking form of 3-5-2. I would have been happier to see more youth starts and less signings this season but appreciate I’m in the minority. For what it’s worth I’m not at all having a go at those who want to know about why signed players can’t seem to get a game I’m just saying perhaps it’s more nuanced than Gios shite or Wilson’s shite or Board failed. Some or all of those things can be true but for me he’s a bit damned if he does damned if he doesn’t just now purely off an expectation and horrendous let down vs them. We quickly went from sugar to shite playing pretty much the same way with same people in a week or so. I just can’t relate to the bleakness felt by many.

Spoon

100% we look on with envy at guys in lesser euro teams who we early 20s and trusted to play it won’t get our homegrown guys involved in the same way. It will of course lead to some failing to make it or dips in some games but if we don’t try we will never know or we stunt them developing.

Heart and Hand

I agree with that, I think there’s been a really down feeling not totally warranted with where we are. I’ve also said for six months now it’s time for McCann and Lowry (when fit) to feature. However, we did lose quality players in summer and it’s not unreasonable to hope that some quality can be added across windows. The fact we’re still playing essentially the 2019 team most weeks is a concern.

Spoon

Absolutely as I say multiple things can be true to varying degrees. I would have liked a proper marquee attacking mid but we have collected a treatment room full of folk we need to shed and a large squad (especially if we include half a dozen youth prospects) so keeping all content would be an issue if we don’t clear a few out. I suspect if Alf and Kamara had gone the dynamic would have changed, purely a hunch but I think Gio would have been content to let Morles leave in good terms to get the cash in and avoid some of the attitude potential pitfalls. I do appreciate I’m in a minority and perhaps even hyper-Panglossian compared to you…enjoy the differing views, keeps you grounded to hear your deep held beliefs robustly challenged!

Gregg

Young players don’t get a chance to play - if we can’t play a young player and 10 ‘first picks’ vs some of the weaker teams at home then they are simply not good enough. Waiting until we are 3-0 up or clear in the league is kicking the can down the road. Also hear a lot “it might ruin them” - well it seems getting the opportunity is the lesser of two evils

Graham Jones

I don’t think it’s impossible for us to compete with Ajax or Napoli, but the manager needed the board and Football Director to step up and give him the players to handle these games. This is proving to be a sore learning curve we’re on as a club. These tow games have hurt us, but we need to learn from it and make it work until we can bring in someone who knows how to help the manager. Ancelotti couldn’t have done much better with the squad we have. We have good players, but we need a few more. The spirit was back, so that’s a step forward, and we were in a game until Sands got sent off. I’m not as downhearted despite the result. The truth is the performance was much better, but the result wasn’t what we needed, and in the Champions League it’s the points from the result that you need. Regarding Davies, I don’t think he was the managers signing. We saw this with Colin Hendry, and unless I’m overshooting here, it looks like the same thing again.
