Andy and Ross are joined by David Edgar to discuss a shock Scottish Cup result.

The Souness Revolution was well underway by January 1987, but it encountered a huge bump in the road at the hands of Hamilton in the cup. The boys discuss life as a Rangers fan at the time, the emotions during the game and the lingering regret of a missed treble.

As always, if you have a game that leaves you feeling blue that you would like to discuss on the pod, please feel free to leave a comment below.

My first Rangers game 😬 Birthday treat for my mate who lived across the road and had got me into Rangers… wisdom of the parents was that this was an easy win for Rangers and we would have a great time!

Without doubt, the oddest match day experience I can recall. Heavily hungover, I had a feeling we were never going to score right from kick-off. I was quietly praying for 0-0🤷‍♂️.

Scott Parker

This led to what was probably the worst week of my young life supporting Rangers at the time

John Davidson

This was my first encounter with bitter disappointment as a Rangers fan. I was 8 at the time and my pal, who was 9 or 10, took it even worse and broke all his dining room chairs!

We could have played all day and would never have scored. One of those horrible games. Another game which sticks in my memory came against the same opponents 2 weeks earlier at Ibrox. Quite possibly the worst refereeing performance I have ever seen. Dr Andrew Waddell sent off Roberts and Durrant. We won 2-0 with 9 men to go top of the league but I’ll never forget the reaction of the crowd towards Waddell. He was unbelievably bad that day but seemed to enjoy being the centre of attention.

Thanks Andy & Ross for the latest episode of Feeling Blue. Thanks David for going through your Feeling Blue moment - it's mine too!! For those not there, the year before this wouldn't have raised an eyebrow! It wouldn't have been acceptable then either, met with anger (probably more anger) but it would've been understood as it wasn't so unusual to have such defeats vs such teams - this tells its own story to the state of the club and our aspirations at the time. It is the utter SHOCK of this loss, suffered by THIS team, at Ibrox, which makes this Accies game resonate as such a huge moment. Post Souness this result was unthinkable, simply impossible to even consider. But it happened. And everyone with even the slightest awareness of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿⚽️ was waiting to ram it right up us - bring us back down to earth. It really is the epitome of a cup giant killing performance; total dominance, can't fault the our players or tactics, they get one chance & one goal. Even in other shocks we haven't really had any quite as blatant as this, which adds to the impact felt. A proper sore one!!

Their goalkeeper Davie McKellar played a blinder, then moved to Dunfermline and knocked us out again the next season! He ended up at Ibrox for a year as understudy to Andy Goram but never started a first team game. So many games that could get a show. There's obvious ones like the 1989, 1994, 1998 and 2016 Scottish Cup finals or the 1979 horror show at Parkhead that handed them the league. But I probably feel bluest about Steaua Bucharest knocking us out of the 1987/88 European Cup, as I genuinely think if we hadn't sold players, and lost players to injury, we had our best chance ever of winning it.

Cracking listen - enjoy the context of the match being set as well. Brings a lot of memories back of the day - my most vivid memories are of the colour of Ibrox on my first visit.. the blocks of colour of the seats, the most brilliant blue of the Rangers strip, the sunshine on the day. The slap in the face as the all-conquering Rangers I expect to see didn’t bloody win! Ironically enough, the first Rangers game I took my son to was a 2-1 home loss to Hibs. I think (hope?) these experiences build character 🤣 And yes, probably an opportunity lost for a Treble that season. Rangers got stronger as the season went on and other than an away trip at Parkhead, it’s difficult to imagine another tie causing significant problems. The league was the priority that year though.
