Alan Stewart

I’m treating this pod as therapy. Shell shocked at the clusterfuck we paid through the nose to witness.

Tamus

Resign

Scott

Utterly embarrassing, where are we heading to with Gio? The answer is nowhere.

Kris

Humiliation after humiliation after humiliation. He must go and plenty others must follow.

Craig Armstrong

Shellshocked is one word for it. Others include Raging, livid, furious. I can see no way back for Gio, these results happen too often.

Leslie Hibbert

It's a great point, there isn't the same belief in Gio like there was for Gerrard. For whatever reason. But that could just be remembering the good times. And, we were still a little fanny dazzled imo

Steve Clark

Gio is done I am afraid,I agree with David and Martyn he won’t be sacked immediately but I don’t see a way back, tonight is one severe beating to many and it’s humiliating on top of it which rangers supporters don’t forgive easily or indeed forever.

Kenny Stewart

Wilson , Van Bronchorst, his backroom staff & a number of players Rangers careers finished tonight, inexcusable performance, humiliating result & a continually nasty habit of capitulation while shipping preposterous amount of goals embarrass each & every one of us. Time for huge change or an acceptance of 2nd best

John Smith

Not so much Gerrard but when Mick Beale left, our tactical strictness went completely out the window. Myself personally I’d be straight on that phone to QPR

Lea Thomsen

If that wasn’t the end for Gio it was certainly the begging of the end. How long the procession is is up for debate I guess.

Heart and Hand

We were very fannydazzled but the reason doesn’t matter, you just need that something to keep fans connected and he doesn’t.

Douglas Hannah

Gio knows he’s finished, he’s not got the stomach to turn this around, just a matter of when, not if. Would be glad if I woke up tomorrow to news he was offski, but I also don’t trust the current board to make that call.

David Campbell

Sadly I can see this running until we are completely out the title race and the season is a write off. The board will hide behind the run to the europa league final for as long as they can. Sometimes difficult decisions need made and sadly as Rangers manager his time should be over. These players aren't playing for him they don't believe in his tactics. Lundstram was having a go at him for not having a sub ready when Jack was down. Did anyone notice that

Steve23

Gio is finished, I agree it’s not now, but it’s in the post. I do feel for him to an extent, let down by the board, massively let down by the Director of Football and last bit not least, let down by that group of senior players. Ultimately though this is on him. I agree with everything you said however I was supported you didn’t focus more on Tav and Lundstrum in particular, both haven’t kicked their own arse this season and both let the club down massively tonight JL is living on his cult status formed last season, he gets credit for shouting at Mutondo to get up during the game at the weekend! Then tonight yet again, no leadership, no dig and no desire. He shit his pants in that 2nd half and Tav was the same. I stuck by him from day 1. Those same senior players let the fans down massively tonight, it’s humiliating, I hope they have enough professional pride to recognize that and step up from here on in. I highly doubt they will.

Martin Davies

Gio'a remit at the start of the season would be to qualify for the CL, win the title and maybe a domestic cup. He's achieved one, and only 2 pts behind in the other, and still both cups up for grabs. He's far from finished regardless of what us in the stands think, or how poorly we play.

Jim Milne

Ultimately those in the board room will be rubbing their hands at ticket sales, stadium revenue and Champions League TV and not giving a crap about the scoreline. There are many to lay blame. The board for failing to build from a position of strength and success of 55 and Europa Final, failure to buy players who go straight into improving starting 11 and playing Moneyball with every player we buy Colak aside. As well as letting huge assets run down their contracts but that's for another day. Gio for consistently playing players who don't perform and not giving other squad players their chance. Do we even practice set pieces in training? IMO many players in that team signed for the chance to play for Gerrard 1st and Rangers 2nd, and feel let down with the way he left. Gio is a slow car crash just like Advocaat was. He won't jump, and the board won't push as long as revenue keeps rolling in. As much as this is the beginning of the end for Gio I feel it'll take a complete capitulation of the league in order for the board to push Gio. Sadly as long as revenue keeps rolling in I fear the boards ambition will never match ours.

Graham Jones

I don’t think anyone could’ve made much with the squad we went into the Champions League with. The manager will take the flak and his sacking will protect a board who have shortchanged him after he made them a mountain of cash, a cup win and a European Final that we should’ve won. Too many of those players look like they want to be elsewhere, or are not good enough to wear the jersey. Our midfield you were talking about is currently being converted into a venue spot next to the stadium. A facility that’ll take the best part of a decade to return our investment in it. I’m not going to say anymore, because I don’t need to. We’re all feeling utter anger at the capitulation we witnessed in the second half, but especially the last 20 minutes. Full respect to Liverpool, because they were ruthless, and that’s what they need to be if they want to win it this year, but it’s not hard when the opposition are gutless. This was a hard one for us all.

LAURENCE MACRAE

I know there’s a gulf between the champions league and the Europa league but there’s not that level of gulf , if we played like we did last season against Dortmund home and away , Braga , Leipzig , Red Star at home then that doesn’t happen , we might lose but nothing like that. The only thing I can compare that to in my lifetime of watching Rangers (I’m 51) is the 5-0 at the piggery under Murty , where it was like watching school football and every time the opposition came forward they and we expected them to score. Apparently the easiest thing to do in the world is to park the bus and be tight , how often do we hear it when the diddy teams of Scottish football come to Ibrox and we struggle to break them down ? Well we showed tonight in the second half what can happen if a team basically chucks it , at times this Rangers team seems to complain we can’t live with the Liverpools of this world because of finances while at the same time not putting the foot on the neck of teams where the gulf in finances between us and them is no different to Liverpool and us , Tav and Kent over both games for me summed up how weak willed we are , where two players who lit up the europa league last season essentially shat the bed and couldn’t do the basics right, a very disappointing night and one I’m not sure we will recover from any time soon.

Craig Hart

It's not worked out with Gio. The manner of that second half capitulation alone is grounds to sack the Rangers manager. Otherwise, we have lost the standards by which the club has upheld our entire history. I feel for Gio, I'm gutted for him. But he has to go. I don't trust him to lead us into big games and get the results we need for success. The buck doesn't stop with Gio. Big questions for the club. A couple of 4-0 wins over Hearts and St Mirren have been paper over the cracks of an extremely inconsistent team all season long. He changes the goalie and failed. He plays Sands and fails. He plays the captain, Ryan Kent, Lundstram consistently in bad form. He plays the captain in an old firm game when he's not fit. He plays Ryan Jack and he's clearly struggling. Connor Goldson has been a bombscare despite a good first half and a couple of decent games this season. He can't decide on the strikers. He can't decide on the wingers. There's so many red flags for Gio culminating in a humiliating CL campaign. It's over. It's not worked. Sir Alex Ferguson could come out of retirement and no get a turn out this aging squad in desperate need of a refresh. But Gio has added to his own problems with poor decision making and utterly horrendous unforgivable results. The look on his face suggested he's walking. Either way, he's gone for me.

David Gardner

GVB must go! You can’t have this many embarrassing results in the space of one year and survive. He was the manager which lost the league last year in a 12 point swing, too many battering, team don’t look as fit as they do under him. We as the fans can’t trust him or his approach the Europa league run papered over the cracks. We have good players who are not performing and that is his responsibility, even tho I do think there are still issues with recruitment. Ross Wilson and his position is something that we need to discuss as well but the manager needs to go.

Gary Brown

👏👏👏👏Exactly! Plenty of turgid awful performances but wins under Smith won league titles. Revisionism has them now glorified as silky wonderful Brazil '70 style world class romps to the title.

CJT

Thanks gents. Much more realistic summary than the car pod tonight. Capitulation again with more to come is my take away. Inevitability now about the manger.

Doug Young

My daughter's bf is a Liverpool fan. He'll be too embarrassed to talk to me about this game. Yes, levels, but I have never been so disappointed in my team and that is saying something after some recent performances. Utter tripe. Tav looks unfit. The car ponders blamed Greegsy for letting the corner out but Tav just gave the ball away in the first place. Never seen a team treat the ball like an infectious disease like that. I watched on TV and Steve Mac kept saying incredulously "Why so slow? Where's the pace? Get it forward!" Welcome to Gio-ball. The World of Turgid. Lost it.

Brian Moore

They say “there’s levels to this” I didn’t realise those levels are light years. I hear “Gio has to go” a part of me agrees, the worry is, who replaces him with these players? I think the common denominator is the “Senior pros” they’ve been the ones who have been in this situation more than once. Our “leaders” have a habit of going into there shells when it gets tough. 😫

Gary Brown

Thanks for taking the time and putting in the effort to bring us this David & Martyn. All great, valid, considered honest opinions raised, as ever lads 👏👍 but very commendable in these unique circumstances. I couldn't agree more with 99.9% of what Martyn said - only thing, re mental strength. The most vital question Martyn 👏 but WTF is he meant to say? Yes and it'll be a stick to beat him and the players with every single time anything goes wrong - anything! No and and his next words can only be 'and I'm done with them, bye'. Gio's biggest problem from day one is simply he ISN'T Gerrard - too many fans 'fannydazzled' (cracking phrase BTW🤣, first time hearing that!) by SG and like the jilted lover now mistrusting of next partner, Gio is the rebound. But in a show us your medals comp, Gio wins. If Gio wins the league this year he easily eclipses SGs achievements in half the time. This defeat will cause carnage of opinions & attitudes on social media and in the stands, pubs, etc. Too often our support is quick to judge, quick to anger, slow to understand. How many will watch this game back? Actually look at what went wrong & why? Was it simply 'chucked it'? Or was it the nitro boost of absolute elite level players being introduced? Likely #2 and its impact caused #1, not the other way round.

Spoon

Great measured pod gents at a time others are deciding to set fire to everything like that’s a solution. Football doesn’t stop and there seems to be a huge number of people who despite recent history don’t realise how destructive regime change at a club is especially financially, to change now would most likely write off the season simply as there is no way to really change personnel. I hope Gio shows some Dutch detachment and is ruthless with the has been a that we have had hanging around since 55. Yes there are players there who have done a job for us but we are far too clingy to guys who have done things for us but simply aren’t doing it consistently or haven’t done anything recently. We are clinging to a team identity that should have been dismantled and reformed long ago. If we chop this management team there will be even less money for transfers and even less opportunity for changing the team.

Andrew

The reason we - and I mean the support by and large - never turned on Gerrard en masse was because he and his teams were never humiliated in the way GVB and this side have been in big games. Gerrard had bad patches but I never felt we were ever on course for a result like this tonight under his management. Gio is a decent guy but 7-1 at home - regardless of who you are playing - is a disaster for any Rangers manager. In the way that happened with Pedro, once you cross that humiliation threshold repeatedly it is very difficult to come back from it

Paul fitzpatrick

I'm no Kent apologist but he always shows for the ball and tries to make things happen. He must be shagged out making numerous runs only for Borna to take the easy option instead, and he still has to track back to try and protect Borna who is permanently in reverse. Not sure how Shagger escapes any criticism after that performance it was as bad if not worse than McLaughlin's at the piggery and look how much stick he got for that. The ball went through McGregor for at least 3 of the goals, his angles were out for at least one and any keeper with a bit of agility would have prevented the corner for the equaliser. Now we know why Walter played 4 centre half's in the Champions League!

Ross Matheson

Not a lot to disagree with from the guys there. Only thing I might add is that 7-1 scores in the CL are very much a thing these days (Martyn said they shouldn't be in the opening comments) and it's more and more regular as teams like the Elite 10 or so move further away from everyone else. Doesn't excuse a lot of what we did that made it very easy for them but it's definitely a thing now. Just look at the Napoli score in Amsterdam. We've probably got similar coming when we head to Italy ourselves. The support just hasn't recovered from the Parkhead game...nor the players actually.

Doug Young

Can't agree. Kent has been awful for months. Barisic gets the pelters for Kent's lack of movement and his decision-making and shooting are embarrassing for a professional. Much of what we do breaks down with him. He's not alone but the last few months he has been standout terrible.

Fraser Dobbie

Good pod. Couldn’t agree more re Barisic. He’s been ok this season, but he’s very limited in what he can do and he really struggles to defend against pace. The Ridvan situation is criminal in that either he’s mince and a total waste of money, or, more likely, management haven’t been willing to give him a few games to bed in, accepting that he’ll maybe take a bit to get up to speed. The game was lost in the transfer market really though. The only better options available to Gio were arguably Ridvan, Lawrence ahead of Arfield and a fully fit Morelos (see Ridvan above). Kamara is also a much better option on his day than any other midfielder we have, but management can’t motivate him / have misused him so much he’s regressed. Our GK situation is a joke. Our midfield is so awfully underinvested. Lundstram, Arfield aren’t near good enough vs. top players. Davis os completely done. Jack did ok, but that’s it. Don’t have too much criticism for the forwards after that. I know we want more from Kent but he had no chance of catching up to Gomes for the 2nd. That one was lost by Barisic flying out of position for a ball he couldn’t win and King leaving Firmino in the box.

Paul fitzpatrick

Not suggesting Kent's recent form has been great Doug, and I understand that he's probably held to a higher standard due to his fee, past form, etc but he's became a bit of a whipping boy which is a shame because we simply have no one better in that position and we haven't, for the 5 years he's been here.

Gazza G

Goldson I apologise for taking you for granted and agonising over your 2 brain farts each match. You are obviously the real soul of this team. Get well very soon.

Andrew Meldrum

Still struggling to process last night. First half arguably better team, then the last half hour... Lots of people rightly talking about Goldson but Jack going off had a similar effect. Davis is done at this level. Sands might have been a better choice. And the subs show the problem. At 3-1, we were preparing subs to chase the game. Liverpool got the 4th, the game was done and we still swapped the front 3. Fairly sure most managers would have changed tack, and instead taken Borna and Arfield off (who should have been going off anyway as he couldn't run any more). But no. Lundstram getting stick is deserved. The problem with him is he plays on the edge, a missed challenge away from a booking. Last half hour he stopped taking risks, and vanished from the game. We won't do anything now, but it's difficult to see what Gio does to change things. If last night was our strongest line up, then all the alternatives are either lacking or injured. Tillman hasn't done anything since Lawrence was injured, Matondo has done nothing to suggest he can be better than a flying Kent (remember him), Ridvan looks way to small to be a player. We are left with the likes of King, McCann and I am not sure they're ready.

Doug Young

Fair point. I think Barisic gets it tight much more than others and feel Kent contributes to that. I just don't like players being a shoe-in for a shirt on matchday when they clearly are way way off form. Borna has arguably been one of our best players this season but gets pelters as soon as he puts a foot wrong, while others haven't put a foot right, yet get handed the shirt without question. Haha, sounds like I'm a Borna apologist now!

Gary Shaw

Being a successful manager at Rangers requires a character that instantly commands respect and has an aura about him….you can use all your wanky terms and came through as many “City Groups” as you want but if you don’t carry yourself like a Rangers manager then you’re done for….He instils no confidence in me whatsoever so I can’t imagine the players will feel any different

Steve23

I get that mate, it must be a nightmare doing these pods after a bad result. We will e picking over that performance for months if not years so it’s impossible for you boys to cover everything so soon after the game. On second thoughts, maybe it’s best just to lock it away somewhere and forget the details. It’s honestly so bad I don’t think there is anything from a tactical sense to learn. Hats off to you though for coming and doing a good job of capturing the main discussion points. I couldn’t so it.

David Conway

None of us expected to get out of this group, you’ll get some that are blinded with blue tinted glasses that thought we were gonna qualify for knock outs, but that being said there is a way to lose and we just surrender and that comes all the way from beyond Gio. Wilson surrendered in the transfer market, Gio surrendered in getting players in, the team ha surrendered in how many games now: Hibs Celtic x2 Ajax Liverpool x2 We could go on all day, the tactics are absolutely woeful, negative side to side, backwards passive negative rubbish. Gio has taken a team that was in your face and fight for every ball and absolutely destroyed it. I hate to say it but he should be relieved of his duties today not later, we can’t sit and wait until he destroys the team further, the confidence of the team, they look like shells of players they were under Gerrard. Tell me one player he has improved? I can’t think of any, they have all regressed. We keep him in charge and we stutter with a few draws and un inspiring wins and we get to the Celtic game and we go into not expecting them to start quick yet again and get pumped, by then it’s too late to sack him. Sack him now and give us a chance.

Dougie Jones

Very fair point about results like this increasing as the top teams go stratospheric.

Gregg

I think the point about the Gerrard team is a bit misty eyed tbh - the team was regressing badly in his final season and stunk the place out numerous times. For some balance I think the likes of Bassey and Lundstram to name two improved under Gio, whether the latter would have done so with games anyway is possible.

David Conway

I get your point but I’d say that Bassey and Lundstram had already started to improve under Gerrard that season before Gio arrived. If you look at Lundstram last night he’s a shadow of player he was last season and that’s under gios leadership and a pre season. I honestly think that Gio drove us on in Europe in the tails of gerrards team, his signings have been horrific Colak and Lawerence apart

Gregg

Disagree on Bassey - he was hopeless at points. On the signings Davies looks like he will be decent too. The others have questions marks but it’s pretty early.

David Conway

We don’t have the time to give him, all the signings etc aside we are dreadful, tactics are woeful and this is easily the worst style of football outwith the banter years I’ve ever witnessed rangers play.

Gregg

I’m 50/50 on it to be honest but probably would still like to give him more time. I’ve seen worse tbh but all about opinions and get the frustration

David Kiltie

Looking back we missed the moment after 55 to rebuild. We could have raised serious money from Kent, Morelos, Kamara, Aribo. It is easy to forget that this time a year ago we were not exactly in great spirits- failed to qualify for the Champions League, scraped into Europa League group stages, lost our first 2 group games, defence leaking goals, 9 points dropped in 1st round of Premiership fixtures with the chance to put the “foot on the throat” of that lot squandered. Gerrard’s departure and that malaise were obviously linked - which drove which is the more interesting question. The last 2 CL games are dead rubbers but still important from the point of pride, finance and coefficient. A criticism of Gio’s teams is that they perform well when the pressure is off - note the great league form last season after the Old Firm defeat at Ibrox. How ironic if we perform really well in both games. I reckon the 4 weeks leading up to the World Cup will set the tone for this season.

Alastair McGeoch

It starts with Wilson, we built our footballing identity on Gerrards philosophy and Wilson is responsible for making sure players and managers fit the philosophy. Gio is the antithesis to front foot, pressing the opponent and I think the team are not comfortable playing the Gio way. Secondly, leadership on the park has always been lacking. Each capitulation has involved tavernier hiding on the pitch. Again, Gerrard and his personality on the sideline and off the pitch went some way to covering it. Gio appears to take the huff with the team in each capitulation and sits back letting it happen rather than getting off his arse, getting to the sideline demanding more from some players and coaching others. Gerrard held a lot of the club together, Gio isn’t that type and he looks clueless on how to change it as it is happening regularly now. Gio needs to go, Wilson needs to go and the squad needs an overhaul.

Craig Hart

I get the impression that the "young team" within the support don't want to see the manager go and lend much more sympathy based on us now playing against good teams. That's fine if you're Leceister or Tottenham Hotspur. We're Rangers. We don't settle for shite when we see it. That's what has made us who we are. Also seems the "old guard" bears are pretty unanimous in the reality that Gio should probably go. I'm in that camp. The young team are wonderful in their vocal backing of the team and I'm a bit of an optimist myself. But they've only watched good Rangers teams on video. So does that acceptance of mediocrity come with it? Just an observation. I'm sure there's many exceptions to it as Rangers are passed down generations for most if not all of us. But I don't know how anyone can defend the managers position at this point?

Craig Hart

I think that's a very one sided view of the situation. The reality is his tactics and decision making have been very questionable. There's no consistency which translates to no trust. He's been cuffed more times than any Rangers manager should be allowed. And that's within a year. The phrase "the writings on the wall" very much applies here. 2 points off the lead, yes. Should be more had Celtic not hit a speed bump. It's only October and the cracks have begun to appear. The writings on the wall lads.

Graeme Price

Liverpool ran up a cricket score when the game was done and congratulated themselves for it. If anything is pathetic it's them and their tricolour waving support that thought the last half hour of the game meant anything. Let's not let ourselves get dragged down into their delusion. They'll be lucky to reach the quarter finals of the CL and may be in the Europa league next year if we can hold them to 1-1 for sixty minutes. Calls for Gio to leave, get a grip on yourselves.

William Electricity

Finding it really hard not to take this as patronising, the views are scattered across all ages of fans. It’s not an aged-based debate I don’t think

Craig Hart

Not trying to be patronizing at all. It's merely an observation within my own network. I've been wrong before. But I find it interesting none the less. Respect all bears opinions. Doesn't mean I have to agree.

Paul Dunnachie

Regardless of what a manager is asking (or not asking) then to do, this set of players lacks a maturity, self-sufficiency and basic character that most of our support expect to see in a Rangers team. Plenty of players who have been here for year now and happy to receive the adulation when things go well are hiding when circumstances demand that they dig deep. Squad needs overhauled… but I wouldn’t trust Wilson to be anywhere near that exercise.

George Higgins

They are not stupid men and will realise that continuing bad results will affect fan and commercial revenue . Apart from that I agree with most of what you say.

David

One person that deserves to be sacked before Gio is Ross Wilson. No point getting rid of Gio to bring in someone else who has to work with the same shite being handed to him during transfer windows. RW is the root of all these issues. Gio has shown there is a tactical manager in there who knows what he is doing. He has lost Aribo and Bassey and not replaced him with quality. I think Gio has been hung out to dry. For me, Wilson should be gone tonight then we can review Gio at later
