It's back to league business and a first meeting this season with Aberdeen at Ibrox on Saturday.

We need a reaction and fast with form and confidence low as the team look to turn the tide as we seek a minimum of maximum points.

Alex, Steven and Kevin present The Preview.

I liked the LA Lakers comment. They have Russell Westbrook and in the last year his legs have just gone and he has just turned 33. I firmly believe this is where we are with James Tavernier.

Michael Gray

Really sensible Alex. COVID impact has had a massive impact. And meant our ability to sell players for top dollar was undermined

James McKenzie

Well done guys, that was about 3 pods for the price of 1. I think Scottish managers have fallen behind because the role has become more technical and we tend to be more skilled in terms of motivating and man management. We're also culturally behind in terms of the marginal gains regarding diet, lifestyle, practice routines etc. We always have been, but now it just matters more. As for modernising Ibrox, that's incredibly difficult and that can probably needs to be kicked down the road as far as possible. How football looks in 20 years, in terms of the constant expansion of European football, will also be significant for determining how that can play out.

Gregg McKee

Come on Alex mate. No one expected a straight line improvement overall however did anyone see this significant regression that we are witnessing. I watched PSV play Arsenal off the pitch last night. What has happened to us. This isn’t “little steps back”. It’s a serious and significant regression across the board.

Pondo Sinatra

Surprised there was no mention of Tam Courts as an up & coming Scottish manager. Early days for him but he made Dundee Utd look half decent & gave us problems. 🇬🇧

John Smith

What about Derek McInnes with David Martindale as co-mangers ? McInnes as the more traditional managerial role with Martindale providing the coaching aspect

Gregg

Good to see humour is alive in well in this dark and troubling time

chris smith

Rangers should be serious challengers for the league ever season. Period. If our model is to ‘buy projects’ and ‘take steps back’, its the wrong model. Moreover, its all very well selling Alfie and Kamara for 30+ million but the reality is that we currently do not have the scouting infrastructure or the youth level infrastructure to realistically replace sales and remain competitive.

John Smith

I know it’s a bit bonkers Gregg but I definitely think it would be an improvement on what we have right now

ANDREW CUNNINGHAM

Oh Kevin you jammy so and so you got a Mars bar as well for standing outside the pub

Martin Boyd

No it really wouldn’t, Gio is getting pelters for the style of football being played , McInnes isn’t an improvement if anything his football is a lot worse.

Alex Downie

Could you imagine the response if we sold, Alfie, Kent and Kamara as well as Patterson or at the same time as Bassey and Aribo? To me one major player per year is ok, but to allow players contracts to run down at the same time is a major issue. Will McCann Lowery and Lovelace make the step up soon?

John Smith

Could it not be argued though that that’s because he’s had to play that way due the players he’s been limited to ? I remember at Bristol City and early on at Aberdeen he was a lot more expansive. Martindale I personally think is a great football mind who would be able to adapt his style with better players

Mark

Imagine how HJK must be feeling, watching the decay of Alfredo's form and application as his contract winds down.

jamey Carruthers

Alex we can afford players that improve us. We've spent the money we have badly and mismanagement of the squad has hampered us. Two things that can't be denied.

Graeme Dempster

Agreed we are far to small as a team and nowhere near physical enough however this mindset that Scottish football is so physical is absolute nonsense! Just ask any player that left Scotland for England. Imo the main reason we are struggling in the league at the minute is all down to tempo. We play at walking pace and that's why we've been destroyed in Europe time and time again.

Christopher pollock

Alex look across the city they bring in players that take them forward and they don’t spend amounts that we can’t so it can be done, great show as always lads best on the platform

Gregg

We’ve got someone on another thread talking about Robbie Neilson and Souness Barry and Dunc were mentioned too. Ross Wilson is having a tough time but some of these are just wild. If we want a British manager we’d be better looking down south

Martin Davies

Good show gents Regards the running stats - I watched their players run full pelt to win the ball back and we struggled to retain possession. On the other hand, Kent and Wright are culpable at the first 2 goals for failing to close the wide man down. Don't make excuses for them.

Pedro

Agreed. The implication that how hard a team works from running is irreversible is peak excuse making. Alex needs to get onto guys like Ten Hag and tell him it is normal that attacking teams like Brentford run more. 🤣

Brian Rae

If we're unable to afford improvements to replace Steve Davis, Arfield, Jack , then we're in bigger trouble than I thought. We're 6 months away from that reality and the rebuild needed will require better than we currently have.

Blair

Steven harrigan .. great content

Lee

I always end up listening when we have bad results to talk me down. I want to bite while raging. But it makes me realise it's no THAT bad.

Scott Watson

"If someone's wanting to say Robbie Neilson, go and take a fuck to yerself" Amazing 😂

Alan Ryder

I don’t remember Alex McLeish being received that positively. Wasn’t negative as most just wanted Advocaat gone, but I thought it was more “really? Ok let’s see what he can do”

Alan Ryder

And keep it going lads. One of the best things about this pod is the range of views. Best show on the network

Scott Watson

That's exactly Strider's point - the context matters Man U had 66.7% possession in that game We had 38% possession against Napoli The less you have the ball, the more you will be staying in your defensive shape - staying compact and not covering much ground. Tav isn't going to be shuttling up and down the touchline in the opponent's half if we're stuck in our own third. Does that mean he isn't working hard?

Martin Davies

It's the eye test Scott I see Napoli players lose the ball and burst a gut to chase back and win it quickly, whilst watching our players amble around. We may have wanted a solid defensive shape that stays compact and therefore doesn't cover the miles, but why we're Kent and Wright not bursting a gut to close those players down? And I'm only highlighting those instances because it resulted in goals, there were many other examples of players in dangerous areas being given far too much time and space because of our lack of desire (across the entire team). And it applies equally in an attacking context too.

Scott Watson

Cracking show gentlemen Strider, sorry to see that you're copping a bit of stick. People can ultimately say what they want but I think that's very poor form. The Preview has the most detailed and nuanced discussions on the network and having all three of your different points of view is essential to that This pod's discussion on mortgaging the future for 55 was fascinating. I think there is definitely a level of truth in that - we bought Roofe, Itten and Hagi with money we really didn't have and although injuries have made Roofe and Hagi virtually irrelevant over the last year, those two were absolutely crucial in 55. We also played real hardball with bids for Morelos that we may well have accepted if there wasn't an emotional component to the decision making

James McConnachie

Stevie had a belter there. 'Peanuts in dung', 'cling-ons' and 'the final solution'. 🤣 Seriously though - the midfield is old. Good management looks at the turnover of players. Lewis Ferguson and Lowry would have enhanced the team. Don't buy the 55 chat. The players are out there in the market to enhance us. Bottom line is , it is up to the manager to manage.

James McConnachie

Managers: 1) Malky Mackay - okay he's a total racist but should be at a higher level. Will probably sign black guys. Maybe. 2) Alex Neil - he's from Airdrie. Nuff said. 3) Martindale - capable. His past is the past. Would likely get the best out of Morelos. Will definitely get him playing for Columbia.

Jamie Gourlay

Loved the show again guys, great discussion. Always listen on the way to match and if some left over on the drive home. Enjoyed the stadium discussion... it would be good to keep doing topics like this away from the team or manager from time to time. Cheers

Alan Ryder

Latest comment after the game. Alex you were correct, Sands as the sitter in midfield allowed Lundstrum to bomb up and down the pitch. 👏
