It's a reality check for Rangers in their return to the Champions League with humiliation at home and abroad, injuries and controversy over ticket prices. The more things change... Andy and John join Martyn to reassess this campaign and revisit mounting pressure on Gazza, a costly treble chance and one of the greatest Old Firm games of all time.

The first part of that bio. 👀 The more things change, the more they stay the same. 😂

The two results against Dortmund are a bit under appreciated largely because of the two doings we take from Juventus, who were an incredible team at the time. Is it this season or early 96/97 where they go to the San Siro and give AC Milan a 6-1 doing, which basically ends Baresi's career?

Martyn Ramsay

The following season. Milan won the league quite comfortably in 95/96. Think Juve’s full attention was on Europe.

Mark

Goram definitely played the first half at home to Juve

I always thought that year's European performance wasn't as bad as the following year in the Champions League and in years previous. Agree about Stephen Wright. He would have been a good player for us.

The Juventus games are the ones we all remember, simply because we got such beatings. But for me, the campaign is seen as a poor one mainly down to taking 1 point from 6 against the Romanians. They were a decent team, but we really should have at least beat them at Ibrox. I well remember all the empty seats in the stadium, who knows if we would have beaten them with a full house. The pricing was ridiculous given we weren't yet in the age of wall-to-wall TV coverage of Scottish games and it was free to watch the Champions League on STV.

Wee bit surprised that the departure of such a key player in Hateley has passed without much comment? Does the fact he comes back in March 1997 mean we've got that to look forward to?

Agree with some of the comments above, in hindsight is this campaign really dictated by the Juve drubbings? Now looking back, we were up against the winners of the competition & a team that made 3 finals in a row (the only team to ever have done so I think? 🤔) who were the champions of the strongest league in Europe. Then a BVB team that had half of the Germany squad who won Euro 96 in it & players like Sammer, Moller etc. I know this is against the backdrop of you guys saying this was an entirely different era of Rangers team, but do we owe them some slack all those years later? I agree with the above post re the next season . . . We 100% should have got out of that group & was a much greater chastising experience given we spent even more on Albertz, Bjorkland etc

Callum Dinnen

AC Milan had made the previous 3 finals in 1993-95. Ajax and Bayern Munich each won 3 in a row from 1971-73 and 1974-76 respectively. Real Madrid won the first 5.

Also, am I right in thinking McCoist's equaliser in the 3-3 game is his final Old Firm goal at Ibrox?

Martyn Ramsay

In the context of the noise of this season, it was a quiet and understated departure but yes, we’ll have a chance to discuss him again. We talked about him a lot tbf

Thanks again Martyn, ably assisted by Andy & John, for bringing us the latest episode of this epic & awesome series. Well if 'the penny dropped' way back then re the reality of Rangers actual status amongst Europe's elite it's bounced back up since, cracking heads and causing amnesia given the arrogance, then disbelief of this season's UCL campaign! Yes in retrospect the results v Dortmund aren't given the credit they deserve, overshadowed by the hefty humbling by Juve. But they in turn mask the actual problem of the campaign - not being able to cope with Steaua, 1 point when 3, 4 or even 6pts was required. The schadenfreude of the non-Rangers in this nation was easily their biggest joy in a decade. Gazza! The epitome of a flawed genius and the fine line between genius & insanity. Got to admire his bravery / lunacy for diving into the goldfish bowl of Scottish football. As ever, looking forward to the next episode. Keep up the great work guys. Thanks to all.

What a great episode Martyn, John and Andy. All the emotions! I do agree that time has perhaps shifted the gloom around that UCL campaign, though personally at the time I do recall trying to explain to people that the 4-0 home reverse wasn’t as bad as the 4-1 loss in Turin! And I’ve always maintained that a sizeable chunk of the crowd at Ibrox applauded Juve off the pitch- can anyone corroborate?? The home game v Dortmund was a really good occasion, but the Steau home match was pretty dire in terms of atmosphere as I recall. I took my then girlfriend to Hampden for that semi final. Turgid. And even worse that she lost my 1st Rangers scarf that my granny bought me as a kid 😩 I was living in a flat beside the Park Bar on PRW at this time. When I returned home from the 3-3 match my 3 flat mates couldn’t shut up about the game (none supported either of the OF), it really was that great advert as you say. The Save will live with us all forever!

"Tosh McKinlay, who doesn't get a lot of praise on this show"......buckled!
