Thanks for another great show guys 👍 Is there a particular sporting director or even someone who could fill that role who you would like to see in the job ? You mentioned Joe Savage, who while I don’t know would fit our club I think has been more successful in his remit with Hearts than what Ross Wilson has IMO.

Stuart Sheils

2 hour pod?! Surely must be the record! That’s this afternoon sorted, cheers lads.

Iain Reid

I honestly don’t think you can criticise gio for not getting his message across and lay all the blame on him when you look at what he’s dealing with. We have a squad of players who more often than not have let us down, players who’ve openly questioned whether they’re mentally strong enough. I think he’s made mistakes yes but the lack of desire and effort the players have shown on a number of occasions this season aren’t down to him. We do t have leaders on the park and when they cross that white line it’s up to them, the manager can’t do it for them. Difficult to build a style of football when you’re changing your centre half partnership and midfield pairing every game👍🏻

Re Morelos playing to the right of Colak: I, and every Gers fan I know, would rather play Alfie there than the empty shirt that is the pointing, inanely-grinning Arfield who contributes nothing. But what do fans like me know? Well, I, and every Gers fan, knew after a couple of sightings that Simpson was an absolute DUD - but apparently Gerrard and Beale didn't see this!

James McKenzie

Thanks for another entertaining pod and for answering the question about the post UEFA/Europa final European seasons. An extra thanks for answering the question with me having put it in the wrong thread! I agree, it's better to suffer the prolonged public embarrassment of the CL group stages, while getting well paid for it, than an anonymous one off beating in the early rounds - both on the football and financial levels. I think the fans might have been able to be more balanced about the whole experience if they weren't fleeced for tickets. The 08-09 squad won the league with 86 points, unfortunately I don't think that would get anywhere near cutting it this season.

Pedro

Fingers crossed predictions are right and it's a comfy win tomorrow. We gave deals to 4 guys in their mid or late 30s this summer. Alarming if anyone thinks our recruitment strategy is based on developing young players. And we're on the verge of losing 2 of our highest value players who are in their mid 20s. Not sure I can get behind this as a successful approach or good in comparison to them. Success will be based on who is winning leagues. Spot on about the CL group being a step too far. A tough, tough group and I'm not surprised we have zero points sadly. The talk of finishing second, beating Ajax etc was delusional.

Steven Harrigan

Great point, thats what I mean in regards to the overall standard of our league. I think it's awful overall the now.

Scott King

Not even sure it’s up for debate anymore Steven, the league is the poorest it’s ever been, in my 50’s now and can’t think of a time where it’s been this poor (obvs taking into account us being down the leagues for a period of time) Sadly I don’t see how it improves anytime soon given idiots in charge and the fact most would rather see others suffer rather than bring in measures that could improve standard, feel the ship has sailed for the game up here now

Guys, never thought to write before but, having heard you were getting it tight for some your opinions (esp Alex) on the current situation, I just wanted to say that The Preview is imho the best Rangers football pod (along with the Daily Update) on the go. A podcast that treats fans as intelligent readers of the game and gives nuanced tactical breakdowns of the opposition is like a breath of fresh air compared to the bilge Radio Scotland and Clyde put out. I think it was Richard Gordon on the Beeb the other night who laughed about his son reading a book on XG and gloried in the fact that he'd never do anything like that. By contrast The Preview of the Livi game meant that I had a much better understanding of their stats and was consequently (rightly) bricking it when they went ahead....thanks for that, Stevie! I also really enjoy the fact that both of you can offer well thought out but often opposing takes on various aspects of the team and club. It's genuinely enjoyable to sit agreeing with Stevie and then have my view recalibrated by Alex's take. The pod has evolved and got better and better and obviously takes a lot of work but the results are pretty obvious to anyone who listens. A pretty sookie message but you guys deserve a pat on the back. Keep up the good work.

Pedro

Interesting point from Alex about how we look back on Gerrard's time. It's true that the performances were poor in his final season and that's what Gio took over from (and inititally got results). But crucially Gerrard had a wonderful season before that and also had us at the top of the league. Like it or not, that matters in Glasgow.

Angus Mackay

Great show, as always, guys. Thanks for taking the time to answer my question. The interesting thing about the Gerrard comparison is that at the time everyone was complaining that the patterns of play were too predictable and easy for opposition teams to plan for. Now that Gio takes a more fluid approach people say there's no pattern. The latest Tactics Talk is very good in respect to this.

Scott Watson

Thank you gentlemen, brilliant discussions Thanks for finding something to talk about in my sprawling mess of a question 😀 I agree with Strider that we're getting selective amnesia about some of Gerrard's time. For all we won 55 at a canter, I think people forget how many close games there were in that season - 6 draws and 11 games won by a single goal. There were some real slogs in there from January onward too and several games very similar to the draw we just had with Livi where we just resorted to lobbing crosses in over and over again. I can distinctly remember Kev (who I hope is feeling better!) commenting on the pod that we were the easiest team in Europe to prepare for because everyone knew how we'd set up and try to play I very much hope to be wrong but I think this might be one of those games where we're in no real danger but the breakthrough takes a while and finish up little bit of a hard work 2-0

Craig Skinner

How an earth anyone can criticise the gk for the 1st 2 goals is genuinely beyond me. I suspect that theory comes from a pre judged position. 1st goal complete mishit and doesn't even go where the scorer intends, then the 2nd is deflected on or near the 6 yard line.

Gregg

Correct - as with a lot of goals they look east after the fact/ in slow motion
