David would you take the Denmark manager at Rangers after his wc with them? Just on the face of it, I'm not pretending to know his career either.

Heart and Hand

To be honest I’m never keen on hiring international managers for club football based on that international experience. It’s so different.

Alan Cowan

David Rangers Store opening in Ayr High Street possibly tomorrow Are you guest of honor for the opening?

Simon H&H

I’m all fairness, Gio may have picked up 91 points in 38 games… However, he’s also overseen a now 20 + point swing in that same time. The board’s indecision is going to cost the club here by basically writing off the season 1/3 of the way through.

Russ

Aye that's fair enough, I just think they've been punching above their weight for awhile now. Wouldn't mind a brave appointment.

Paul

So the board plan on defending Gio at the AGM. The same board will then sack him a few weeks later. If you don't laugh and all that...

Simon H&H

Re the injuries. We had players admitting the fitness regime was downgraded. So the same intensity and ability to go long and deep into matches had dropped off. Then the manager turned round and dismissed what the player (Arfield) had said as untrue. It’s not bad luck it’s constantly happening, it’s bad management and I’d also say a lack of preparation domestically.

Alan Cowan

You're an Ayrshire lad, that's celebrity status. I didn't know we were getting a Rangers Store in the Ayrshire capital

Allan

Alex's comments are reasonable and well-reasoned. I initially took a similar view. However, upon further reflection, I'm coming around to the change is needed now camp. It's all well and good looking at Gio's record, in terms of points over a series of games, but the stark reality is Selic has and continues to dominate on the field of play and shows no signs of relenting. If that Selic form is the new reality, the benchmark so to speak, then it is quite obvious Gio's record is not good enough. Albeit there are injuries and when coupled with seemingly poor squad management there's a case to be made in support of giving him more time. IMHO that view only amounts to once again kicking the can down the road. The facts remain. We gave up a winning position last season. We are already 9 points adrift this season after barely 25% of the games and there's nothing in the way we are playing to suggest any of this is going to improve. It just seems inevitable to me this ends up with Gio losing his job. It's just a question of when and not if. Rangers is about winning titles not about games over a period of time. Remember that's the standard Gio must uphold. Anything else is just unimportant.

Gregg

Re the injuries - when you’re off the back of a season when we played so many games, it could be catching up. Similar thing has happened to Liverpool and way back when 93/94?

Alan Cowan

I know Absolute s****. Rangers Store will bring a bit of happiness to most. I'm sure the puddle drinkers will have the paint tins at the ready

David Clapperton

So we’re going with Gio. Ok, I may no agree with it but I can understand it and respect the decision has been made for the right reason. However the board must now back him. Properly!! Go out and get him HIS players and if the guy’s going to fail let him fail under his own steam because I’m certainly not convinced that’s what’s happened so far. I really hope this is the case and he turns it around. 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

Robbie McCarroll

Sorry off topic for todays pod but I don’t know if this has came up but is there a H&H WC fantasy football ?

Spoon

Great to hear the ‘voice of reason’ back on the update. Don’t leave it so long Alex 👍🏻

This has got to be a contributing factor, for some! It's a routine factor cited by many top coaches season after every WC or Euro, late sesson after Africa Cup of Nations. More games than they are conditioned for are an overload so must have an effect. Why is extra time in top level games littered with top level athletes cramping up or blowing out their butts? Because they're conditioned for optimum performance over 90 mins! This will likely be the cause of many of our niggling type injuries too.

Tamus

Hi Alex, GVB won't be like Artera. GVB a boring dud.

Greig Massie

David, one point on the various videos of 'fans' around the various metro stations, fan zones etc in Qatar. Not all is what certain media would like you to believe. If you think about it, why would any group of fans be in country 2 weeks before a month long tournament starts? Who has the time off work to be there that far in advance of the games starting? What has actually been happening is that Fifa/local security have been running simulations to test the stewards/volunteers/security etc responses and how to manage crowds and onlookers who are taking photos etc etc. Any other location would be congratulated for their approach to pre planning. The 'fan' groups are made up of Indians who live and work quite happily in a variety of ordinary jobs who are musicians in their own time and have been asked to help out with preparations for the world's biggest month long festival. Don't believe the hype.

There are several excellent homelessness charities and maybe not everyone is aware that Shelter has a very left wing agenda that goes far beyond their original purpose. They have a great name and do good work but no organisation is beyond criticism. Let's support them, but not unthinkingly. I hope commenting on a sacred cow is ok!

Robert

Interesting to hear you both think Shelter are one of the better charities. My experience of them was the exact opposite. Probably a different person now but their financial director of around 15 years ago thought nothing of squandering tens of thousands of pounds of the charity’s funds every year unnecessarily. Haven’t given them a penny since.

Mark

The irony of the injury crisis of 2000/01 and some players being able to play through injuries is ironic because our manager was one of them.

Craig Fryatt

Strider, the voice of reason

Roslyn Hutchison

I can understand the board keeping GVB up to a point. However it seems to me that some players are just not performing for him so how does he turn that around? If we are talking clear out, then our league season could be over, if it isn’t already.

Gary Brown

Thanks for the update David 👍😊. I always enjoy my Rangers Daily News courtesy of H&H. Nice to hear Alex back too. I'm unashamedly in the camp of give Gio more time, for many of the reasons Alex raised. Hagi - a truly wonderful and insightful player, not always as rightly said. Neither were Cooper, Gazza, DeBoer & Godrup, all had bad periods in games, bad days & bad spells. The discussion re Hagi & Lawrence (& Tillman) and the lack of spark / a key contributior is a 'case for the defence' for Gio. Quite expertly presented BTW Mr Edgar! (Same with a lot of the squad discussion on the flagship show on Monday 😉) Our big gap at advanced right / right wing - Gio put a truly creative mind & talent there to try and overcome that gap "Hagi's no' a winger" was the cry - he wasn't meant to be! Just had to look for assists, the odd goal - which he did. Aye he's better in mid / #10 but he's the only one really capable of something a bit different / game winning in our squad in that position. Re injuries and not fancying the fight - The flip side of the argument is ones playing with knocks when they shouldn't. With a full squad / team flying they'd dip out to recover. However with a threadbare squad they keep themselves in and do their best (which isnt truly up to scratch) to help the team and end up getting abuse for what they do. eg Tav at 75% or throw in a youngster barely graduated from the B team? Most managers (and fans!) would go with the former, the tried & tested option. The points 'swing', points dropped is totally & utterly undeniable but this is down to many, many variables; - our sheer volume of high level & intensity games (that mhob just didn't after the break) - 🤔'poor' (?!?) ref decisions VAR would overturn. Caused a 4 pt swing in 1 weekend, (Feb 20th). The headered off Morelos 'pen' away at the sheep, another 2pts dropped (plus more!) - howlers of our own making eg Ross County away, M'Well at home - which no manager can prevent or prepare for. There were plenty pre Gio too! We shuda been out of sight, 3 draws at home, 6 pts dropped last Oct - no calls for SG's head! - the 'transition' due to player trading (something very few fans seem to account for). Top performing regular starts going out and replaced by developing players. It's routinely a step back and a new way of life we must get used to. - club finances available, contracts, injuries and simply, that other mhob just gelling & getting better. How many of these does Gio have control over? But he's taking the blame for them. Most importantly he's shouldering it all, totally on his own, with no 'excuses' or mitigation. These are factors the board are also looking at.

Tom

Rest easy Howard Finkel, absent friends!🥃

Allan

There's been absolutely nothing to suggest we can look forward to an Arteta-style revival. Why do Rangers boards always appear to dither with these decisions, is it purely financial, or maybe just the egos of successful businessmen not able to admit they got it wrong?

Graham Jones

I’m now too exhausted by the current situation surrounding the manager. Should he stay or go? I almost don’t care anymore. What I do care about, is the long injury list our players were joining on a daily basis, and that the club strengthen the squad in January. We need defenders who can head the ball, we lack pace in the front line and we need serious work done in midfield. However, I’m also aware of the general rule that you only buy a player in January who is a target for the summer. That might be the trade off they make int he finances, but we’ll see what they do.

Graeme Robb

David and Alex, Great discussion. The point about the effect of bad luck on injuries is an interesting one. Statistics provide a mechanism for us to determine if a situation is caused by luck. What would happen is get a sample of data from other clubs, do the analysis and any difference from the norm would be deemed a statistically significant difference. Which scientists would agree confirms that it is not luck. This type of analysis could easily be done and I would expect that the club have the skills. My hypothesis would be that it is not luck and we can do something about this.

Pedro

Sadly if you get mauled by celtic and only take 1 point out of 12 against them in a 38 game season you're not doing good enough at Rangers.

Doug Young

Arteta put faith in young players. Gio's faith in youngsters has been shown to be driven by injuries and necessities.
