Good show, enjoyed the debate. I thought you went a little easy on McLaughlin. The word "levels" was mentioned along during the pod, and that's where we are with McLaughlin. He lacks presence, stature, aura. He carries himself like a no2, or a Hearts/Burton Albion keeper. He may be better with the ball at his feet than McGregor, but it counts for nothing if you can't keep the ball out the net. Foderingham was a decent keeper and I was pretty comfortable with him between the sticks. Until McGregor returned and there was such a step change in levels. He brought an immediate sense of control. He instantly had the trust of his teammates. We tend to talk about technical skills, but what separates good players from great players is confidence, self belief, strength of character. McGregor has this in abundance. I don't think McLaughlin does. Maybe I'm a dinosaur brought up with Woods, Goram, Klos, etc. when it comes to keepers. I look forward to the next debate on full backs - on this one I am definitely in Adam's camp with regards Tav.

Thanks for this goalies show lads, always like to hear your opinions. Bottom line - McGregor is 'then', McLauchlin is 'now'. We need a ball playing & mobile / expansive gk in this current era or we are at a disadvantage (particularly in Europe). No blame or criticism of AMcG in any way. He is a product of his era and an elite one. JMcL is the best gk in the league behind Greegs & Gordon. He's perfectly competent but standing in a mighty big shadow and has big boots to fill, with unrealistic comparisons consistently levelled at him by the fanbase. If he gets backing, which he fully deserves like every Rangers player (& manager!) his confidence & experience as a Rangers gk with those particular pressures & circumstances will develop. Lets be honest Goram took a wee while to settle & adapt to the unique peculiarities of our gk role. Thanks again lads, I always enjoy your tactics shows.

Love the shows, but can’t agree this time. The fact that there’s no absolutely clear winner between McGregor and McLaughlin is a clear indication that we don’t have any strong enough options. Allan McGregor has been a tremendous goalkeeper for us, but he’s not doing enough of the stuff that made him incredible (“wonder save reel”) to let him off with the failings on being glued to the line, which has got worse, and poorer distribution than we’d like. McLaughlin is a decent backup goalie, but he’s shown us in the tougher games he’s played in this season that he’s not of the required standard. Yes it’s one game, but not Rangers no1 should be capable of such a horrendous performance as what we saw at parkhead. The reason there’s no highlight reel of wondersaves is that he doesn’t make them. We need to aim higher, agree the whole situation was mismanaged, but not signing a new no1 in summer, and probably the summer before it, has been criminal.

The GK situation is just such a mess. We have had 3 GKs all sign new deals within the last year and ultimately i don’t think any of them are good enough to be Rangers no 1. McCrorie is still young enough but hasn’t exactly excelled in previous loans and going from 3rd choice behind McLaughlin and this current version of McGregor seems a pretty massive jump. McLaughlin is a fine GK and I was ok with him being given the gloves in the summer, agree that he has been harshly treated and right now is probably our best option. Just feel like as soon as McGregor stayed on he was destined to fail tbh, any mistakes were going to be over analysed and fans and McGregors pals in the media would be all over it. Some ex players in the media were all over McLaughlin even before the Celtic game and that is going to help shape fan opinion. Absolutely love McGregor but it’s painful to watch him now. He looks so stiff and his kicking is beyond awful at this point and teams know to target his weakness at crosses. Even his shot stopping has regressed in the last year or so, the odd game apart. Liverpool away as an example.
