There are players that are so beloved by the Rangers support that there is a universal acceptance that they simply should be in the Hall of Fame.

Then there are those who are inducted that don't have that universal acceptance and their places are debated.

On todays episode, Grant is joined by Hoggy and Andy McGowan to discuss the subjective nature of the Hall of Fame and to share their opinions on players that are debatable inductees into a group that is meant to be elite.

And of course, Alfie Conn Jnr.

he's in but should be with an asterix noting *by default*

great show lads :)

Bob MacCallum

Russell not in HoF due to lack of medals, international caps yet most of you believe TAVERNIER will deserve to be in it? Unbelievable!

Greg

Novo should go in at some point

Bob MacCallum

Correct me if I'm wrong but did the Committee not elect the 1972 team on masse, without a vote? If not, no reason for Mathieson being in HoF. Mediocre player fitting NONE of the criteria.

Kyle Kutasi

Conn should definitely not be in there

David Baillie

Great show lads. Totally agree that Conn should not be included. I can understand some of Andy’s thoughts on Bobby Russell however I think if he had seen him play in the flesh his opinion would be different. He was an outstanding player and should definitely be included in the HoF.

Grant Sneddon

The team were inducted separately Bob, for example Alfie Conn was inducted in 2007 but Willie Johnston as 2002

I agree Conn shouldn't be in there but also agree it says a lot for the Rangers support he can still attend Ibrox and not be in any fear of coming to harm. I remember him being presented to the crowd at half time in a ceremony for the CWC team and he got some boos, but nothing vicious. Can you imagine Johnston appearing at the piggery? I'm pretty sure any time he's in Scotland he needs a bodyguard, which says it all. Great show btw lads, I really enjoyed it.

Does nobody know the reason why Conn chose Celtic..? Was it something to do with wages or past contracts at Ibrox? I remember someone telling me but can’t recall the detail. Might be off on one, right enough! 😂

John Smith

Alfie Conn signed for Celtic. But for me being a Barcelona Bear trumps that. I think it should be about what players did for Rangers and who cares what they done for other clubs

Taximan2002

Robert Russell should be in the HoF, no doubt about it in my mind. A fine player who at 20 years of age controlled matches in that first season, especially that cup final of 78, he was immense. Unfortunate with injuries throughout his time at Rangers, especially his final season. I’m in no doubt Souness would have used him a lot.

He was done. He wouldn’t have passed a medical for us . Look at number of games he played for spurs and them. I think his ankle or maybe his knee. It was Stein up to his old tricks and I guess they would be only ones in for him. Generally around that time there was an annual non signing of contracts by our players due to poor wage offers. An example I think 12 didn’t sign initially in summer of 1976 and most not until season starts/

john cowden

Agree John. I read he wanted to come back but his injury record was prohibitive. Think also under rated how much him and parlane took the fight to them with a much higher degree of success than Colin stein and bud did together . His new year winning goal in 1973 fires belief into a rangers team who were on a one win ij 12 games v them including losing the last six games.

I think we should judge who deserves to be in the Rangers Hall of Fame by what they do on the park, dugout or board room when representing Rangers. On that metric? Conn deserves his place (as does Kenny Miller in my humble opinion). Our Hall of Fame should not in any way be impacted or swayed by any other club - they simply don’t matter. If players make that mistake to represent them? It’s their own conscience they’ll need to live with, not our place to condemn them and forget what they achieved while fighting on the side of light. If we start making decisions and judgments based on what people do away from Ibrox then where does it end? Do we remove Gazza for the dark side of his life? Butcher for his comments since leaving? DJ for his lengthy spells on Radio Clyde and apparent lack of backbone at times? I don’t like any of these things in isolation, but I’d never call for or back any of these men having their history with us whitewashed and have them removed from the pantheon of our greats. It’s a slippery slope towards a form of piousness that goes against who we are as a club. But each to their own of course…

Grant Sneddon

All good examples to give Ritchie and some really good points as well. I think the subjective nature of the Hall of Fame will always lead to debates like this which are always good to have.

Mentioned the 3 names you gents questioned to my dad and he thinks all 3 deserve their place. I only remember the tail-end of Russell's Rangers career but my dad rated him highly. Souness and Wilkins were exceptional footballers. He also reckons Conn deserves his place. My own personal opinion is that Wilkins, Souness, Gascoigne, etc didn't play enough to merit a place. There should be a line at 100 games as a min regardless of impact and talent. And players should have retired from playing for 5 years before being considered to reduce the recency bias. However, if we consider impact and legacy as well as what they delivered on field, then Walters and Mo Johnston should be inducted.

Grant Sneddon

The retirement point is a really good debate point which will come up with some current squad members Martin. One of our last episodes I'll come back to it in detail

Alfie Conn was a great player for us and it would be rather churlish to omit him from the Barca 72 squad HOF just because he signed for them later on, especially when it was the only contract he was offered at that time.
