Alan and Andy join Martyn this week for a difficult episode where a hero's dark side is exposed. The reaction to Gascoigne's domestic violence is reassessed 25 years on as well as Gough's departure, the farce that was Kenny Dalglish: International Super Scout, Center Parcs on the strip, a worrying loss of form before two of the most pivotal Parkhead victories of the entire series.

Outstanding episode guys. Listening right now and you've really done well regarding the Gascoigne assault. Definitely agree that the club did not deal with this properly at the time but also that this was sadly a reflection of wider society in the 90s.

I wonder if the failure to support Gascoigne, particularly with his drinking, is in part because doing so would have shone an uncomfortable light on a number of individuals at the club as far as their own drinking was concerned.

My wee brother was the mascot for that Motherwell game and got nutmegged by Gascoigne during the warmup.

That's an excellent first half hour with relation to the Gascoigne chat. I think that's part of the reason, I never loved him the way others do. I was always a Laudrup fan but when the conversation comes up now about "the best ever" between them, there's no contest for a number of reasons. Gazza's star might have shone brighter for that 8IAR season but other than a few months beyond that, his time here was a shambles. We barely got 18 months out of him. For all the "Laudrup chucked it in 1997" chat that will be to come, if everyone else had only "chucked it" to his levels, I reckon it'd all have been different. The club did handle it really badly and it's not even with 25 years hingsight we can say that. I'm with Alan's view on it all.

In terms of coping with that Old Firm game - I was only 11 and didn't. I can't remember the exact moment (possibly after Gascoigne's penalty miss) but the tension got too much for me and I played Super Nintendo for 20 minutes or so until I dared turn back over to see what the final score was. So I missed the late drama! 🤣

An example of the times. We went to a fancy dress party around that time and a couple won the prize dressed as Gazza with a full strip & bleached hair, and Sheryl with blond wig, black eye & arm in a sling. 🫤

Russ

I agree with Ross, some of the Gazza love is baffling and probably comes from a place where we love to put our troubled geniuses on a pedestal. Except battering your missus isn't troubled, it's c**tish.

Fraser Martin

Donald Findlay, eh. His contempt for the support has only deepened since then. What an thoroughly ridiculous, risible and unpleasant man. We may have moved on, he's very much still stuck in the 90s, and not the 1990's.

Same age as Andy, and my views on the incident are identical (I'm ashamed to say). I actually bet Gascoigne for 1st goal vs Aberdeen because I just knew he'd respond, and can remember his no-show for the warmup. Looking back, we should have binned him, ripped up the contract and set a standard that we expect of Rangers players. Maybe it could have been so different for young Charlie Miller if he had a better role model. And maybe, just maybe, our players would have been in a better condition and frame of mind to push for 10.

I can only assume Laudrup's back injury in 1997/98 was the result of carrying the entire club on his back in 96/97. The 95/96 shows, particularly re-living the Aberdeen game on my 11th birthday made me re-evaluate whether I was wrong to not have Gascoigne in my all time Rangers XI - this show and I'm assuming the remaining 6 shows will probably convince me I'm not just being contrary for the sake of it and hopefully puts the myth that selling Gascoigne cost us 10 to bed.

I've combined this episode with a listen to the Time Capsule episode on the 4-3 cup final against Hearts - in that Martyn asks if he thinks we should have gone for McCann earlier - were there ever any rumours of interest on our end or would signing a Scottish player have simply been seen as beneath us, particularly now we were free of the foreigner rule? I think McCann (and Rangers) were probably best served by him developing over his time at Hearts, I don't think McCann would have been the player he was if he'd come to Ibrox straight from Dundee.

Nothing in the papers or fanzine, no. Definitely a feeling that we had to fill our boots on the continent after the years of limitations and yes, I think he came at the right time.

Martyn Ramsay

I don’t disagree at all Fraser but - unless I missed thousands with their arms folded when he turned that cup final on its head - he was right on that occasion. Vast majority buried whatever discomfort they had.

I think that we know by now that ‘phoning it in’ is the ultimate sin at this club. Rightly or wrongly that’s why Laudrup became a bit of a scapegoat that season. One of many reasons - none of them the final answer - as to why we threw that title away.

Re Gascoigne’s place in the pantheon. Those who thought he should have been sacked has grown a great deal since the reality of Oct 96. There have been countless better professionals and Rangers players who have given the club better service. But in outright talent, I honestly don’t think it comes close and certainly in terms of one man’s impact on a season, 95/96 is as good as I’ve seen. I’d also argue that 8 was more important and more difficult to win than 9. It broke them just when they were gaining momentum with the cup win and the better head-to-head record. I think Gazza’s arrival delayed the inevitable dip by 18 months. How fans reconcile that behavioural stuff with what players do on the park is fascinating and is something, alongside the celebrity culture of the time, that I’ll write about separately.

Scott Christian

That was a really excellent discussion around Gascoigne, well done all three of you; I think you captured well the many nuanced feelings. Whilst in my mind there’s no argument about Gascoigne’s immeasurable talent I will say I’ve always felt a little uneasy about his time at the club. Aberdeen (& other) fans chanting “Gascoigne beats his wife” relentlessly was always the one chant you felt you had no come back to, one that could be dismissed, even within Andy’s perfect observation of family members letting you down yet you stay loyal, there was plenty of shame. Am I a hypocrite for celebrating his goals? Perhaps, but it’s never as straightforward as it seems. Interestingly the swap of STV to cover Man Utd was a direct flip of the previous season when ITV chose Rangers down south instead of Blackburn (maybe 2 seasons before) for the 4th or 5th round of fixtures. Looking forward to the remaining episodes, the whole series really is correcting many of my recollections of the time!!

Gary Brown

Thanks as ever for this truly magnificent series Martyn. Superbly assisted by Alan & Andy.

Twenty-year old me felt that what PG did to Sheryl was terrible - but there was no part of me that wanted him sanctioned or punted from the club. He was far too important to the team. Forty-six year-old, happily married me looks at the situation completely differently. We should have given Paul all the help and support that was at our disposal - but he should never have played for the club again. I can't help but feel that this incident pushed Paul past the tipping point. I don't think he was ever the same player or person after that incident - and how could one be? Living with something like that would surely only amplify the desire to self-medicate.
