The thing is if Helander did not have the injury history or "need to be managed" it's unlikely he is at Rangers, to begin with. He'd be at a lower EPL team or have stayed in Italy. The reality of life now is that we cannot compete for the finished article or top-level players these days.

David Campbell

Helander when fit is the best CB in Scotland. Will be sad to see him gone but it's for the best. As for lowry the guy should be minimum in the match day squads. Personally I'd have him ahead of signing players like Cantwell. I won't be happy if lowry needs to leave our club to get first team football.

The filth were always going to rebel against the laws of the game . I just hope their var propaganda works against them. It indicates that they are getting twitchy about Bealemania. On the subject of Gerrard managing Polska. Perhaps he is a heart and hand subscriber . Has noted the staunch polish loyal on here😜🇬🇧

Craig Watson

It's a pity, but I think Lowry has to go. He hasn't nailed his place despite us having an ageing midfield.

Andrew Hind

Probably for the best Helander heads off, such a shame as he was great for us when fit

Sandy

I’m a Lowry fan, I think he has ‘stuff’ in his locker no one else in Scotland has, he just needs a run of games. I bet Mr. Edgar was raging at the CCS goal direct fro a corner last night? Imagine no one at the post!!

Douglas Innes

Thats a very good point about him not nailing down more starts given out injury woes this season

Ian Cartledge

What a tune….great movie as well! Think its best for all parties if Helander departs, good player that he is….made of glass.

Gregg

Extraordinary, absolutely extraordinary comments from O’Neill. The definition of a greeting faced wee bastard - glad it’s still hurting. His only saving grace is he can’t stand Chris Sutton either.

Scott Tolmie

If hagi comes back and we sign cantwell then for me that’s the end of lowry, head scratcher for me

Mark

Wild if we ditch Lowry. Some other club will benefit instead.

Graeme McLeod

Give him a haircut and tell the management staff he's actually a lad we've signed from some random English academy's team. That'll improve his chances of getting opportunities.

Scott Tolmie

This is spot on, he has not even been given a chance and we are away looking for another no 10, madness, give this the rest of the season

John Smith

Now that is what I call a tune. Watch Drive if you haven’t seen it

Gary Brown

Thanks for the update David 👍😊 Ah St Martin, as delusional today as he's always been! Well done Big Eck for showing that up for what it was. Lowry is something a bit different and hopefully will progress much much further with us, until the point we just can't keep hold of him anymore like Bassey. Our Manager's ethos is all about developing talent, if that talent wants to be developed! The only thing I'd raise is the similarity to the Phil Foden situation, and the Jack Wilshere one! On the great name debate - anyone else notice how since Beale arrived we've all been mis-pronouncing Kolak as Cholak?😉😄

Graeme McLeod

The league is gone - no matter what nonsense Beale will come out with next week, it's gone - and we absolutely should be looking to give Lowry and McCann playing time. And not "here's one game and unless you're amazing, you're out" - they need to get a run in the team. We've seen last season that Lowry can perform against top flight opposition. It makes more sense to see what Lowry and McCann can do on a regular basis than just persisting with the old guard. Ryan Jack has missed over 70 games in three seasons, and he shouldn't be counted on going forward as a nailed on starter. Don't expect we will. We're back to looking to loan young players from other big clubs, and targeting young players from down south who haven't yet lived up to the hype. If a prospect like Lowry can't really get chances then I don't see any other academy lad getting them either.

Adam

You kind of have to ask yourself, how many goals would Tillman score against Civil Service Strollers? Cause that's who Lowry should be competing with in the squad at the moment. I don't think it's a coincidence that two managers have assessed Lowry and decided he isn't quite first team quality yet. Lowry needs to go on loan. It's that simple.

Bob Goldie

O’Neil was on a couple of pods recently , talked about septic getting a favourable refereeing decision when they won 6-2 , in fact they were 3-1 up at halftime taking the lead with an offside goal & we’d had a perfectly good goal chopped off , VAR would have that game 2-2 at halftime , but their paranoia must be topped up I suppose

Graeme McLeod

"Our Manager's ethos is all about developing talent, if that talent wants to be developed!" Is it? He started out as a youth coach as that's what most coaches who don't already have a high profile from a playing career have to do. As a manager he's had a few months at QPR - we don't know what his "ethos" really is. His old pal Gerrard got a chance as a youngster at Liverpool, started out his coaching career in their youth ranks and absolutely was not someone who developed players from our youth ranks, nor had any interest in doing so. It's far too soon to declare him as a manager who wants to develop youngsters.

Johnnie Mitchell

Many thanks for the Birthday shout out David. Appreciated

Michael Gray

A Goldson Helander partnership last would have won us the league, without question. A fit Roofe last season and we’d have won the league. The importance of availability seems to have been downplayed in our recruitment decision making. Needs to change, starting from this window

Gordon Robertson

When you're accustomed to privilege equality feels like oppression.

David Innes

I agree. Lowry is over-hyped based on a handful of promising appearances mainly against poor quality opposition. I’m all for giving our own youngsters a chance but they have to be good enough and I trust Michael Beale to make that judgement. Of all the youngsters who have been on the fringes but not able to nail down a first team place over the years how many have actually gone on to play for bigger clubs?

Adam

I think it mostly comes from a good place. People want to see a young guy who has been at the club since he was a wee boy, do well. However, I don't think it's a coincidence he's not playing. But that desire does seem to trump common sense among some fans. Some people, mostly meaning fans and not podders. Think he's better than he is at the moment and my general view is that, he'll get in the team when it's merited. We shouldn't be playing him if the manager doesnt think he's quite at the level yet. He looked like a B team player against Motherwell, he wasn't bad, he did fine in fact, but he needed to be better than that imo. He's at a point were he needs to show us something at a level higher than the B team, but he's not quite got that edge to play for our first team yet. He's in a weird spot. Tillman is only a year older and he's got detractors, Lowry isn't even close to as good or effective as Tillman is. With Hagi, Lawrence and hopefully/potentially Cantwell to compete with soon, he's going to either have to go up several levels, or go on loan.

Gregg

His injury was unfortunate timing for the lad. The only person that will stop Alex Lowry going to the top is the lad himself - paraphrasing Gerrard, be the best in training and move the others aside.

Gregg

It’s up to us to develop the kids and turn them into players - Lowry has bags of ability but there are loads of people playing park football with hard luck stories. All about attitude for him

Gregg

Gerrard did play Middleton and McRorie - ultimately neither took their chance primarily because they weren’t quite good enough. I get the impression our youth system was in a transitional stage from being an absolute shit show in the years preceding it. Now we have talented players - it’s up to them to take the chance to impress the manager every day and the coaching team to give them the chances if they do so

Alastair McGeoch

Celtic are now at cult level, on mass a group of people sharing in the same hysteria. Reason and balance doesn’t come into it with them anymore. Look at how Ange has changed his tune. Decisions in their favour “let’s talk about a great game of football mate” now it’s “Joe has one save to make, and so did Connor”…Ange is now fully assimilated! It’s also a nice distraction from the fact that in the second half of old firm we were doing what european teams were routinely doing to them, playing through the press or going long and then immediately attacking their ropey backline. Only once we got knackered and started dropping off them did they come back into it. Let the delusion continue, imagine the fireworks if we go and do them at Parkhead…😀

Graham Jones

I’ve no issue with letting Hellander go, IF the wages go to bringing in a replacement central defender who is actually fit. I have less confidence in the club doing so, as they tend to see it as a financial opportunity to cutting costs. That can’t happen if we need players,, and we really need players. There is not a lot left in the way of creativity and energy in our midfield, and while Davies and Goldson are looking the part, what happens when one or both are not fit. One thing that I do have an issue with, is that Malmo have never heard of a nominal fee, which everyone else tends to pay for early contractual releases. Don’t Swedish clubs understand the way football works? As for Lowry playing in the Lowland league, you’re bang on. It’s not only the level it is, but the fact we have young players playing there to learn about the game. We’re not putting players in for trophies, but to produce players for the first team. That’s the only point in us playing there.

David Kiltie

As Steven Harrigan often says on The Preview, the best form of ability is availability. The reality is that if Roofe didn’t have his persistent injury problems he would be a player totally out of our reach.
