Welcome to The Leading Men, a podcast series that focuses on the players who wore the armband for Rangers and led to club to many glorious triumphs and also a few heartbreaks along the way. Trevor and Ash are here to guide you through our onfield leaders.

An exclusive club of just over 30 players have been lucky enough to be appointed permanent captain of Rangers during our 150-year history, and this pod will take a deep-dive on each individual chartering their football journey before, during and after their time at Rangers.

Episode 1 focuses on two of these players: Richard Gough and Lee McCulloch. If Patrons enjoy this, the series will revert back to 1872 and take listeners on a chronological journey of Rangers captains up to the present day.

Can’t wait to give this a listen later on today. Sure sounds an en exciting idea if it was to be a permanent show!

Skippers Blog!

God I’m old!! Or maybe more of a historian than I think 😂😂🤔 looking forward to the rest of the series. As for the title - what’s wrong with “The leading men”?

Kyle Kutasi

Walter was assistant manager at Scumdee United when Gough was there.

Writing this ahead of the second half of this, as if I don’t write it now I’ll forget 🤣 Thoroughly enjoying it. Well done. Great idea and well executed. Looking forward to the rest of it and more hopefully. In terms of names, I couldn’t think of a serious/decent one. “F*ck Sake Tav” was all I could come up with 🤣

Trev @JimmyBell_Loyal

Thanks Damien. Yeah defo will get to Tav towards the end of the series. We may have to do an episode just on him 😂

Damien Stubbs

I also had a thought that it might be nice as a spin off/one off to take a look at the women’s captains since they’ve turned pro. Hill/Doc/Westrup/Gemmel, a few real blue noses, would be nice to hear more about them if it’s possible to dig any of it up! In any case keep up the great work, looking forward to the next episode!

I really hope this becomes a permanent series. It might even give me the answer on why the Rangers captaincy changed in the mid and late 1890s as not knowing bothers me! Davie Mitchell was skipper when we won our first title in 1891 and first Scottish Cup in 1894. But in 1897 when we next won the Cup, the captain was John McPherson despite Mitchell playing in the final. Then 2 years later when we won our incredible 1898/99 title not dropping a point, the captain was RC Hamilton even though McPherson (and Mitchell) both still played. Never found out why it got changed, other than in those days it was simply given to who the club thought was the best player at the time.

Dundee Utd has never won European title. Knocked out by Roma in semi of European Cup. Then, later, beaten by Gothenburg in 2 leg UEFA Cup final. That's best they managed.

Graham Ross

Excellent topic guys, looking forward to it.

Robert White

Jim McLean wouldn't sell Goughie to us so he came via Spurs. They badly wanted him to stay but his heart was set on us: that's why he's a legend too.

Jayson Moore

Really enjoyed this guys, hopefully you can make this a regular feature. Did Goughie not play up front for utd for some games? As for names: Those who have led us.

Steven L

Decent listen. Big jig is one of my favourite players, met him a few times very nice guy.

John Palmer

Trevor sounds like Tam Cowie 🤣🤣🤣

Scott Watson

Enjoyed this pod, hope it becomes a regular thing

John McMillan

Excellent first episode. Looking forward to more - good luck with the series.

Doug

Really hope this show gives Tavernier the credit he deserves for what he’s managed during arguably the toughest circumstances a Rangers captain has ever faced. There’s still a lot of unsubstantiated criticism that floats around (and some valid, supported arguments too) against him. Looking forward to seeing how the show pans out.

Gary Brown

Enjoyed that show, thanks guys. Really good & interesting subject field Ashley. Have you done other pods Trevor? Think I've heard you talking about Rangers before, maybe on another network. Good luck with the rest of the series guys, looking forward to it.

Vinnie

We’ll done Trevor and Ash! Really enjoyed this. Hope this helps it become a full series.
