Martyn is joined by David and Laura alongside an expert , Dr Alex Oliver, for an introduction in the world of sports and performance psychology. What we mean by 'mentality', how players deal with pressure, penalties, when routines and superstition becomes OCD and the concept of form are all on the table this morning.

I heard a story years ago about a sports psychologist (might not be the right term - but a motivator of sorts, at least) who was brought in to help the Scottish rubgy team. They'd suffered a serious run of losses and were facing England at Twickenham. His entire plan had been to build the squad up telling them they're capable of anything they wanted to do. They're men. MEN! He went on and on building them up. "What are we?" "MEN!!!!!" "MENNNNNNNNNNNNN!!!!" The entire squad was absolutely pumped and brimming with confidence and looked like they'd run through the walls of the stadium to get on the pitch and smash England. Kit man knocked on the door and said "right 𝘣𝘰𝘺𝘴, five minutes to kick off...out we go..." and the entire squad sighed. All the motivational work done was ruined. They all realised it wasn't going to happen because they were 𝘣𝘰𝘺𝘴 and were promptly thoroughly pumped. A lot of it is in the mind.

Maybe I missed it but disappointed not to hear the cliche of “if I could bottle it I’d be a rich man” when talking about mentality. 😂 Loving the new show Martyn and good to hear some shout outs to the Spaniel Loyal. #bestdugs

Very good show folks. It had the right combination of podders who were able to ask thought provoking questions.

Would Graham Potter's football approach with his background in emotional intelligence (hope I've got that right) be a product of the 'mental models' and the shift towards sports psychology in the last few years? He's been panned by the media and pundits for his approach but maybe it's the future of modern coaching. Great listen.

Alex Oliver

That’s an excellent point, Russ. Emotional intelligence is something that great leaders have - it’ll also help him be aware of his emotions and control emotional response.

This must be the place. Looks like I have a new favorite show.

Gregg

Asked wee nacho about the Florence penalty and he confirmed he was absolutely shitting himself 😂😂

Steven L

Fascinating listen.

Another great show. I've been saying to anyone who'll listen that momentum is everything in sport. How often do you see a team come back from 2 or 3 down? It's almost like even the most average of players or teams are lifted to another level, both in terms of skills and physically, whilst for their opponents, everything is energy sapping and the simplest tasks are over thought and become hugely difficult.

Great new show - really enjoying it. Interesting chat about Potter at Chelsea being not very demonstrative - a charge thrown at Gio over the last 12mths. As football fans we do want it all at different times - we “need” to see a reaction for the manager at times and if we don’t get it then we become suspicious that they don’t care like we do. On the other hand you have managers who are all all emotion and we question their focus.

The reason we won 55 with no fans?
