In those days EVERY player was an amateur. The SFA banned professionalism. Still amateur to this day, Queen's Park fought against the formation of the Scottish League in 1890 fearing it would lead to " professionalism". How right they were. Before that, some less scrupulous clubs ( like Celtic) paid players " under the counter" or created other ways like spurious jobs to get around the rules. As soon as the English league went professional, the writing was on the wall, as Sam Smith said.

Re international league games, in the early 60s, I went to games like Scottish League v English League or Irish or even Italian League. Some Scots playing in England played AGAINST us! And vice-versa. Think Joe Baker of Hibs, who was English, played for us v England.

Trev @JimmyBell_Loyal

Why oh why would they want that I wonder. I couldn’t think of the Scottish league being anything but professional these days.

Bob MacCallum

The fans didn't treat those games with the same respect as full internationals but they were something different, another chance to see players you would only see, infrequently, on tv, in those days with only 2 tv channels.

Bob MacCallum

Obviously England was the first to create a league system and then go professional. So Scotland had to follow otherwise our players would have gone south to earn money not available up here. The amazing thing is that despite all this, Queen's Park has stayed true to the Corinthian spirit of amateurism. That's why I hope they get promoted to the top tier this season.

Queens Park turned Professional in 2019. Staying true to their amateur status whilst admirable hampered their development as a club and cost them many great players. See 1946 when they had the likes of Bobby Brown and Ian Mccoll amongst their ranks

Bob MacCallum

Ta, Grant. Didn't know about the 2019 change. Other ex QP players: Alan Morton, RS McColl, Alex Ferguson...even Andy Robertson! You're correct about the club's development. Who knows what it might have achieved if it had turned pro, like the others, in the 1890s?

Grant Sneddon

IIRC Bob it was about the same time they sold Hampden. Absolutely, QP are a huge part of the early to middle history of Scottish Football where they arguably could have rivaled the OF at the time if managed correctly

Trev @JimmyBell_Loyal

Can someone explain how Queen’s Park ever ‘owned’ Hampden? Was it because it was their ground from way back in the day? Before they sold it I was amazed if they had ever put anything into the building of the current Hampden.

Bob MacCallum

Trevor, QP owned Hampden and paid for it to be built. At the time, start of 20th century, it was the biggest stadium in the world. Think the capacity it was designed to hold was 150,000. Very ambitious for an amateur club.

Scottish Cup oldest trophy still played for. FA Cup oldest cup competition - original FA Cup trophy was stolen. Sure as mentioned one year or so between both comps.
