The 85 Bears had the greatest defence the NFL has ever seen, but the very factors that made them so fearless, also brought them down.

Led by coach Mike Ditka, and Defensive coordinator Buddy Ryan it was a team that changed the course of the NFL landscape.

The reason I’m a Chicago Bears fan. Ditka is the Walter Smith of the NFL. Thanks for covering this Steven 👍

I’m not sure that your conclusion about the team pulling itself apart is correct. They remained the most dominant regular season team for the rest of the 80s. They got unlucky in 86 with injuries and then McCaskey decided to cash in by trading stars. But most of all, the seed of the downfall was in that one loss to Miami - it showed how to beat the 46. Ditka (and Ryan) stayed wedded to the 46 long after everyone worked it out.

The failure by Ditka to improve both the QB position and the offensive play calls were massive mistakes imo. Not winning or even reaching another SB with that talent to me is only caused by the teams flaws and the fact they did tear apart from the inside out.
