John Cox

Alan, great show as always really enjoy on my Monday drive to work. Why was the Hampden capacity almost halved between the first two games?

Alan Bradley

Thanks John. A number of factors I suppose, opposition as Aberdeen didn’t take a large support, compared to Celtic. In general mid 70s to early 80s attendances for non Old firm finals tended to be late 50,000 - 60,000 being the 76 final v Hearts. Officially 85,000 but did look far busier. Through time unemployment was increasing and level of football violence also seemed to make an impact, even the 77 Old firm final was only 54,000 - possibly on live TV? I must admit, although a bit of a mess , being in Hampden with approx 100,000 was always fab, internationals v England and Czechoslovakia were fab.

Steffen McAndrew

This series of podcasts is superb. Highlight of the week! Would Rangers have won the 78-79 European Cup if Wallace had stayed on as manager?

Stuart Borland

Cheers Alan really enjoying these shows!

john cowden

I suspect not -but we would have won the treble and Scottish football would look v different in early 80’s. If Wallace stays would McNeill go to them at that stage , if not, fergie ends up down south.

77 final was first Scottish final live on tv from recollection. Think you are very right re money (or lack of) and violence, plus 73 we were on a real high going into it. The title charge that just came up short. So weirdly we seemed to enjoy the journey (on the way back 73-75) not the destination (second treble in three years in 78) I mean that hearts final in 76 we probably had 65k plus fans there.

Alan Bradley

Agree, as you say John would have been so much better domestically for us. Probably still challenges with the Board re funding whilst the stadium was being completed, but big Jock would definitely have got a better tune out of the players. His track record of bringing in and developing youth players would also have helped going forward.

Bob MacCallum

Greats shows that cheer us up right now. PS in 77/78, I'm sure DJ scored 39 goals plus 2 for Scotland ( remember that 16 yd bullet header at Hampden?) Yet Ally McClot didn't play him in Argentina when we needed a goal v Iran. Instead, he put on wee dumpy Joe Harper!!!! Suicide! Just because the manager was anti-Gers.

Mark Brown

Brilliant as always Alan. 👍👍

Alan Bradley

Thanks Bob, agree re McLeod, I honestly feel his anti-Rangers bias, impacted big time on our chances in Argentina. Big DJ had been absolutely flying all season and I really believe he could have made the difference. Case of cutting off nose to spite his face.

Ryan Macdonald

Could only have been Bowie for the first one! Anything else would be grounds for unsubscribing.

David Baillie

Good point Steffen but I can put an argument forward for us NOT winning the EC in 79 in 2 words. Billy Urquart. 🤯

David Baillie

Great show Alan. Outstanding tunes and the 73 cup final. One of my all time favourite games. Alex McDonald featuring prominently over that period. In my humble opinion the best pound for pound Rangers signing of all time. £55k from St Johnstone if I remember correctly. Some value for return that.

Alan Bradley

Definitely underrated, when you look at the current squad we have and especially in recent games v Celtic, my goodness what we would give for someone with his ability and application in midfield.

Angus Mackay

Superb show as always , 73 final I was a baby but both my teams won , 50 years already !!!!!

Alan Bradley

Time flies 😂, hopefully the next 50 years will be enjoyable with plenty more cup and league wins.

David adams

Great show Alan , keep them coming 💙
