Pep Guardiola, the man who revolutionised English football or killed it? Not a fan of his style of football but can appreciate it's effectiveness, Arsenal needed them buried in February really.

Yeah I can understand that but generally I find it very repetitive and methodical, quite dull actually. There's something to be said with the lulls in atmospheres with his style and teams emulating it, even last night when they're smashing Madrid there's periods where the crowd are quiet.

I agree and I remember feeling the same about Pep’s Barcelona - generally just find it boring watching a game when there’s a 90% chance you know who’s going to win before kick off (unless it’s Rangers!). That said I’m not exactly a football purist - was flicking between Luton v Boro and Airdrie v Hamilton last night

You’re analysis of Manchester City the team is as good as ever. However, when talking about the club, fans and ownership you appear to be regurgitating tired old tropes and myths which are by and large wrong. And Kalvin Phillips is toast at City, he has no future there at all.

Phillips reminds me of Delph, a bit part player who couldn’t quite make the transition. Sadly don’t hold much hope for him, but as the lads said you can never say never with Pep signings. Always had faith in Grealish, he’s a very intelligent footballer. Trying not to come over as hyper-sensitive due to my City leanings, but the fan snobbery across this platform and others has reached new heights. Was more than disappointed to hear Hoggy say City fans don’t deserve this team. There are major conflations here with actual fans and tourists. The “hardcore” fanbase of City is simply not big enough for the stadium and it’s supplemented by a really large number of tourist half/half scarf fans particularly on these European nights - most City fans will tell you the league game atmosphere is better. Telling any set of fans they don’t deserve something is pretty shitty and elitist (dare I say extremely non-Calvinist!). Secondly for context and following on from Martyn’s observation that the first two goals were celebrated in a more wild fashion- they were in front of the East Stand where the “legacy” fans use the safe standing area. The 2 second half goals were in front of the family stand, it is mostly families in that section. Additionally, the front half dozen rows or so at pitch side are where a lot of the tourist fans are allocated tickets for these European ties. The club messed up with the sales in making it open after season ticket allocation. I’ve never seen such a negative response from fans to this; thousands of tickets for this match ended up with agencies and touts, it was a shambles and left many genuine fans without a hope of actually getting to the game. I also think there’s a change afoot. The owners have always been pretty good towards the fans but of late it does feel like the situation Kieran Maguire explained in The Forum of fans are just getting in the way and how much money can be made is more important than things like atmosphere. Final point; Rangers fans have a benchmark in Ibrox on big occasions that is unachievable for most other clubs in the world. I’ve been to Anfield, Maine Road, St James Park, the Eitihad, Old Trafford including derbies in the latter two, and the atmosphere at best has been very good. No more than that. Anfield is probably the closest any English club can get; when has any foreign player ever said any stadium in the UK outside Ibrox, the Piggery or Anfield is any good?

Well said on the tickets/fans issue, something that isn’t widely known outside of City fan circles and provides a fair context. I’ve seen it reported in the Spanish media that Real Madrid couldn’t cope with the Etihad atmosphere so it couldn’t have been all that bad, even the BT sport crew(full of reds) kept saying how great the atmosphere was. Somehow I suspect the Ibrox atmosphere for none Europe/old firm games isn’t quite what it could be, but you know stones and glass houses etc. Phillips doesn’t play and that’s why he’s done, Pep doesn’t trust him. Grealish/Rodri/Bernardo etc who all took time to develop under Pep all played a lot of games in their first season which isn’t happening at all with KP. I’d sell him and bring Lavia back.

Good to hear from a City fan. The club will just inherently be disliked due to ownership - be that fair or not or based on stereotypes, it’s just the way it is. I love the team and the football most of the time.

Yeah I get it Jack, it is what it is. We have the same issue as Rangers fans in terms of reasons why opposition fans dislike/hate us, like you say, sometimes justified and sometimes not. And when you look at Rangers fans slagging City fans for the reaction at Wembley v Sheffield Utd, it’s a bit rich when some Gers fans probably wouldn’t even stand up if the team scored at Hampden in a semi v a lower division side! I’ve seen that report too Eric, was nice to read. I was at the 1/4 final home game v Bayern and the atmosphere was very good, it’ll just never be Ibrox or anywhere near on a big night! I was always sceptical about Phillips, but you’d imagine Pep had some say in signing him. They can’t all work out I guess!

Scott Christian

Interesting to see the huge majority so far going for a Man Utd win at Bournemouth (me included!). Strange given their abject away form and questions over their resilience that so many are confident in them winning there.
