Kev and Stevie sit down with Jon Darch from safestandingroadshow.co.uk to discuss safe standing at football.

What’s changed in the last 30 years? What’s so great about standing and how would this work in Ibrox?

Looking forward to this, as a BC member Im very much looking forward to the Newcastle game in CF3.

Graeme Burns

I don’t know how this is done without negatively impact those in CF2, 3 and 4, some who’ve held tickets there for decades and don’t want to spend the entire match standing up. If you do safe standing it needs to be the whole front of a stand, and those displaced need to be taken care of as they’ve just as much right as any other group of rangers season ticket holder to enjoy the game. It’s fair to run a trial, gauge demand. Would be worth canvassing the support to see who would want transferred into the CF and what degree of settlement existing users have.

Craig Mitchell

That was superb. What an excellent guest Jon was. Thanks for getting him.

David Baillie

Great show. Fascinating insight as to the options and possibilities. I’m all for having the UB in CF but realise there will need to be some cross support dialogue and concessions made. I’ve made the point here before of the positive impact a big vocal support behind the traditional home end can have. Think Stretford end, Holte end, the Kop, Gladys St, the Gallowgate not to mention the Yellow Wall. I’m old enough to have been at Ibrox with 80,000 attending and the impact of The Derry choir in the Copland Rd end was spine tingling.

Russ

Brilliant lads.

Mark Harvey

Really interesting discussion. I think if the club were to ask existing season ticket holders if they were willing to move to an all standing copland front they would easily get the required few thousand to sign up to it. Thus leaving lots of seat choice for those in the copland front who don't want to stay. 1 thought though. If they make the whole copland front safe standing what do they do with the north east corner at the Ibrox suite? Those situated there will surely have their view impeded?

KMS

Those fans don't matter to the club or the UB, the former are weak, the latter petulant, the fans in those areas are not even considered as worthy enough to be engaged by the club for their thoughts on it

Greg

The club are doing the right thing at last, those fans in the Copland don't own the seats and will be offered alternatives.

Graeme Burns

For transparency I ‘rent’ my seat in the club deck and have done for many years. As a neutral observer on the issue it would be a basic courtesy from the club to discuss with those in CF their thoughts and feelings; whether this is something they would welcome being part of and if not then what could be done in redress? I don’t recall there being many complaints on the intensity of the support from the CF during our run to Seville and would go as far as to say that our supporter showing in Seville would have benefitted from a few thousand more Copland roaders present.

Greg

Times change, no one in the broomloan gets to discuss with the club if they want to get moved for European games or cup games, we are just moved, now the club is thankfully moving forward with improving the atmosphere some in CF will be impacted to make room for fans from elsewhere in the ground.

Graeme Burns

False equivalency. It’s well understood that for many fans in the Broomloan road end - traditionally where away fans would be located - that seat moves would be part and parcel of a ST in that area. This is perhaps the crux of your argument; you’re subject to conditions not apparent elsewhere in the stadium. Why not just apply for a transfer without those conditions? I don’t agree with the assertion that the atmosphere will be improved; it’s an unknown at best. It could also create a schism in the support if its pursued badly. Fan communities built up over decades in the CF would be tore asunder. This is demonstrable in any environment where a community has been broken up by a third party with scant regard for effective engagement - think about civic regeneration where communities of renters were cleared to make way for new developments. Change is hard. Unfathomably so at times. I’d encourage you to take a wider view of the issue; alternate perspectives.

Greg

I'm.in the broomloan because I want to stand,. When the standing section is fully operational in the Copland I will be standing in that section. The atmosphere will be better because we will have more fans who want the away day experience moved to the one area instead of being spread across the ground where standing up is nearly as bad as singing, absolutely no one involved in any active fan group thinks this will get the whole stadium.singing, that's a rare occurrence and always will be. I won't be taking the wider view,.the likes of me have been waiting years for this, hearing the same people with the same reasons for not doing it but now the club have seen sense some people cant handle it.

Graeme

Superb stuff lads.

Great episode guys and very informative. I was already on board with it before but after this episode i hope it arrives at Ibrox asap.

John Hammond

Season ticket holders who rent their seat in the Copland get moved to the opposite side at the Broomloan. It's not hard.

Graeme Burns

Why move? Why not just stay in the Broomloan given there is already an established group there? Anyone who wants to stand can apply to transfer their ST in there in full knowledge that’s the deal. Why the desire / obsession to get into the Copland? As a previous guy stated times change and the distinction between home and away ‘ends’ has become moot, with the majority of matches having away support confined to Govan West.

John Hammond

Because there cannot be a scenario whereby our most vociferous support and 'ultras' group have to be moved out of a safe standing section to make way for away fans. That would be likely for certain European games and cup ties.

Graeme Burns

That scenario is improbable. All SPFL (bar one) are fine with Govan West allocation and I’m in no mood to accommodate the other. So league and league cup games are fine. UEFA rules state up to 5% of stadium to away ticket allocation; we saw that with Liverpool - who took Govan West and BF/R block 5 only. Those who sit there know it’s a possibility. For SC games, it’s up to 20% capacity BUT can be limited by safety certificate, again confining an opposing support to no more than is given for the UEFA. This is used - Aberdeen did it to us a few years back. So is a valid rule. In European ties and big cup ties the stadium comes alive all over anyway, so comments about atmosphere are disingenuous at best. My suggestion would be to trial in BF1-4, where there is already a sizeable contingent who want to stand, and to leave the Copland Road end alone. I’d suggest that the desire to move to the Copland is driven by two things; greater prestige within the stadium and to create the possibility of giving over the entire Broomloan to an away support. Financially that is counter-productive and ethically I’d prefer we limit interaction as much as possible with the most likely beneficiary of that policy. I also find it hypocritical that some people who complain about ST holders being moved from ‘their’ seat in the Broomloan (remember, it’s rented) are quite happy to foist this upon ST holders in the Copland. There’s something quite puerile about the whole agenda.

Heart and Hand

The police won’t allow the safe standing section to be in the Broomloan. It has to be the other end due to proximity to away fans so if it ever happens it will be the Copland.

Gregg

Would like to see it in the Copland with those moved given equivalent seats on the broomy. Can see how people are sentimental to their seats - as someone who moved from the Copland front to the club deck - it’s just a seat in the end as long as you have a good view of the game it’s not a big issue
