With David in transit from Toronto, it is left to Martyn and Laura to take a breath and make sense of a quite brilliant few days of test match cricket. The tortoise defeated the hare in the end but how did it happen and where do both sides go from here?

Bazball is about intimidating the opposition. Australia werent intimidated and won a tight game - which could have gone either way - because England left far too many runs on the field and dropped too many catches … Bairstow cant be the ‘keeper going forward.

Steven L

Brilliant test, I said at the time the declaration was wrong. We like to be entertained and bazball certainly does that but we also like to win. England can’t come away from lords 2 down and they don’t have a fantastic record at lords vs Australia. Game on as they say.

William Mcdonald

I was about to tweet David and ask if there would a review after each test. Superb

Russ

Brilliant match. Bit of a smash and grab by Oz but they won't care, England were on top for most of it. Personally thought the declaration was the right thing for the game in the end, the selection might've been costly though - Mark Wood as a differential and they would've won with runs to spare methinks.

Graeme Dempster

Thought England's bowling attack would be the issue and last night amplified the issue even more.. not much between the sides but the session after the rain(England's 2nd innings. 2 wickets 1 run) was a huge moment for England's momentum! Play Wood at Lords and just use root imo

Heart and Hand

The frustration is that England lost a match they should have won. As Chris said in post one, too many errors.

Mr J K Murray

England and Australia have contested 335 Ashes Test matches since the inaugral series in 1887. Australia have the best of the head-to-head record in terms of Test wins, with 136 victories to England's 108. 91 of the 335 matches have ended as draws. Australia also hold the edge in Ashes series won, having lifted the urn on 33 occasions compared to England's 32. There have been six drawn series. (BT Sorts, excuse sports). A foreign power taking our field, media distracts how this genital life of plants game, hic, has made us constipated as a people, bigger things at play but should have taken those last wickets, the pathos of distance, trick of light aussie defense, yors querulous cross section silly mid on

Kyle Kutasi

I reckon England should stick with Bazball forever. Reverse sweeping fast bowlers on day 1 is exactly what is Aussies want to see! Keep it going

Russ

Heard a few Australians on the radio saying they really enjoyed it to be fair and praised England, not sure if you've got your tounge firmly in your cheek mind haha. Both teams were a credit on that last day I thought mate.

Kyle Kutasi

My tongue is definitely in cheek. You blokes threw it away with that ridiculous kamikaze batting on day 1. Please keep it going, I say!

Heart and Hand

It’s entertaining but I agree with Kyle’s point - England need to remember winning matters more than style.

Martyn Ramsay

The defeat was more to do with dropped catches and negative bowling at the very end than the declaration or the style of batting which produced the highest innings score in a time that moved the game on knowing bad weather would be around later. Again, for those at the back; England don’t have the batsmen to slowly build innings. They have explosive players so freeing them up is the only plan to take. Running into the best test side in the world is a big ask either way.

Scott Dickson

Bit concerned how Stokes in his interviews seems to keep mentioning entertaining the crowd, comes across Warburton-esqe, style over substance. Lose the next test and the series will be flat regardless of how much Bazball is played, because it’ll almost be a foregone conclusion. Bairstow over Foakes for WK was always a worry. Once you factor in the declaration, the numerous dropped catches and the refusal to take the new ball with 50+ runs left, it wasn’t a very good week at the office for the leadership

Russ

Think Martyn's got this one David, we saw what happened Down Under when they tried to defend the wicket. That first ball still sends shivers down my spine haha.

Russ

People will criticise 'Bazball' but when you consider England are current World champions in both t20 and ODI cricket then surely playing with that kind of verve is the best way to go? It's a tap in for McCullum if he's got natural big hitters and lads capable of 0.75+ strike rates - let them play that game, you'll win fans and win most games.

John Smith

This had all the makings of the 2005 ashes

Greg

Bazball wasn't the reason why we lost the test. Too many dropped catches, extras and no balls (one of them being Kawajha in the 1st innings who went on to make over 40 more runs) was the reason why we lost it. It's early days in the series and if we can cut out the mistakes then we still have a great chance in regaining the urn.

Grant MacLean

Test for the ages. It was a gutsy call to declare on day 1. Hindsight being wonderful but while Root is still batting it was bold to bring them in. However it may have meant this great test ended in a draw. I’d take the gloves off Bairstow next week and let him open with Crawley.

George Millar

Great Test match. A lot of thinking required before Lords. Bairstow or Foakes as keeper?, Woods for Anderson? (Jimmy’s race might be run), Mo Ali? Stokes injury? Still looking forward to next Test.

Kyle Kutasi

Martyn, England certainly has batsmen who can grind out patient innings. Root, for one. But you just aren't picking them because they don't fit the Bazball tactical plan. Burns, Sibley, Compton, Jennings. But more so, Bazballis forcing players to change their natural games to make them more aggressive. Root was out stumped charging a spinner on day 1. would he have scored less if he'd just played those balls on their merits?

Martyn Ramsay

All used and all failed. Root can of course but found himself in a rut not that long ago and has been the main beneficiary of the new regime in terms of the freedom that it has given him. All the batters there have been aggressive in the past in other formats so it’s just using that really. The results of the last 18 months are undeniable but this is a huge challenge regardless. Again, it’s not why the test match was lost. Not even close.

Kyle Kutasi

Spazzball strikes again. Martyn, I don’t understand this concept you have that England can’t compete without it. You’re at home, where Australia hasn’t won a series for 20 years. You have all the natural advantages, yet you are playing like schizos because you don’t otherwise think you can win? Bizarre. It’s a strategy that clearly has massive flaws. It took us Aussies to work it out.
