Enjoy the current format for UEFA's competitions whilst you still can, because the 2023-24 season will be the last campaign where we have 8 groups of 4 in the three tournaments. From season 2024-25, we will have one league of 36 teams per competition. More teams, more games, more money. James welcomes Hoggy and Alex to make sense of how it will work, the advantages and disadvantages, as well as what it could specifically mean for Rangers going forward.

Let us know whether you think this format is good and will benefit us, or whether you have doubts over it's long term success.

Having played it a few times in football manager, it is exciting in that’s it’s never settled until the last round of game between the top 8/ playoff 16. Gives you lot to play for and you only need to be in top 24 to stay in Europe, that feels….achievable with 8 games.

This is exactly the content required

Me too; 10+ points seems to be enough to qualify you for the next round, while 16+ points places you top 8. The former seems possible for us. I can see all kinds of permutations and narratives developing between us and them if both involved given the variety of fixtures generated.

as a fan of the " European Hangover " this is great content , a question for all 3 of you ...... Do you think with this new format on the horizon this is why Dermot Desmond has flexed his muscles in the appointment of Brendan Rogers ?? especially if Alex is correct that if continual Champions Lge qualification will in effect create a wider gulf domestically

Great show and explanation. It should be pointed out however that this coming season 2023/24 is the last season that the SPFL lague winners are guaranteed CL group stage entry for the next season (24/25) This is because from 24/25 Scotland's coefficient drops from 9th to 15th best league (unless all Scottish clubs massively outperform 6 other leagues in this coming sesson 23/24). If we drop to 15th as currently projected then we go from 3 clubs guaranteed European group stage to 0 teams guaranteed for season beginning 2025. Regardless who finishes SPFL 24/25 1st & 2nd - both teams would both have 3 champions league qualifiers in summer 2025, where if we lose we then drop to Europa League qualifiers and if lose that we drop to conference qualifiers. So unfortunately we could well see conference league sooner than we think - and the prospect of no European football at all (if we lost 3 qualifiers) returns.

I think success in Europe for rangers, and excuse me sounding like the board here, is any distance into any of the three competitions which allows the clubs annual revenue to grow. Look across the city when they’ve been poor in Europe, they’ve had to lose assets and regress on-field to cover the poor performances in qualifiers. If we grow our books by any means in Europe then it means we are still moving forward. Any long term regression in European performances (and therefore prize money), would see us fall even further into the abyss of the top 5 leagues and even see smaller countries overtake us in terms of finances and in European coefficients. Making it even harder for us to convince talented players to come here. It’s a slippery slope.

Thanks for this show. I had briefly looked at this new format and thought nonsense! But listening to you I think it’s fresh and exciting. It will give us more of a chance of doing ok at a push if we see playing more lower pit teams. However I do agree that the drop-down to the Europa should be part of it. Thanks again. Really good and informative show! 💙

So there will be no qualifying rounds for the competitions? The 36 teams in each competition will be based on coefficients and previous season standings only?

Graham Roy

Thanks for explaining this new format. I wonder if these changes might make the voices from clubs outside the top 5 leagues louder for change! Surely these changes now limits Holland, Portugal and Belgium like ourselves as it is pretty much a closed door for the champions league! Do you think that there may be more support for a Super League 2 with clubs like ourselves wanting a fairer distribution of cash?

Douglas Innes

I think like Hoggy says UEFA only care about clubs from the big 5 , clubs from countries outside of that can feed off the crumbs or nothing at all , when the Super League break away failed UEFA moved quickly to appease those who stepped back from the process hence the extra " Historical " slots and maintaining domestic leagues which the super league wasn't

I’m of the mind the new system doesn’t support the aims of our club at all. We have no chance of winning the Champions League and initially we will have no parachute into the Europa or Conference League - how does that help us get closer to returning to a European final one day? Ok, there’s an extra chunk of money for extra ‘league games’ but we can’t compete for anything on the continent. The current system was working fine in my opinion - our Europa League run and runs had by other clubs in the Conference League were compelling. Hoggy is right - this is all about avoiding a Super League and UEFA only care about the top five leagues. What went without analysis was the Expanded FIFA Club World Cup. Currently, Rangers sit in that picture for 2025, but under the new system qualification is going to end up dominated by the top five leagues anyway, and the prize money in the Expanded Club World Cup is going to be epic. I’m happy to be proved wrong but this new system doesn’t do it for me. There are three clear winners - FIFA, UEFA and the Top 5 Leagues and their constituent clubs. Garbage!

Good show, handy that it broke the format down to something that made sense cos I couldn’t do it for myself when I looked on UEFA website. Just one thing I couldn’t understand - if the 36 teams who qualify for Champions League are split into 4 pots for seeding & then 4 leagues of 9 for qualification, how can you be guaranteed 2 teams from your own pot? Surely that could only be guaranteed if there’s 3 teams from each pot in your league?

chris smith

Yeah, i commented mid way thru listening … you guys cleared it up at the end of the pod :-)
