The 44th edition of the Ryder Cup takes place at the end of this month, as Europe take on the USA at the Marco Simone Golf Club in Rome. Andy Barnett welcomes Andy Fullen and James Forrest to discuss the teams picked by captains Luke Donald and Zach Johnson, what pairings they expect to see in Italy and who will come out on top.

The data on how to pair folk is fascinating - guys that birdie par 3s with guys that birdie par 5s on four balls. Foursomes is even more tech - though you look at the states - with Cantlay and Xander and Speith and Thomas being pals. Think meronk was unfortunate - think Donald had maybe gone with the younger guy with the highest ceiling. Meronk was unlucky but you have to play nail the points or you at susceptible to what has happened

Very much so. Meronk could’ve been picked in front of many including Rose and Lowry. But the blend of experience and youth looks about right.

Don’t think he was ever getting in front of those two. Points are on 72 hole events - this is a sprint. Lowry would be a great partner imo

Spot on. Would have been interesting if Bob hadn’t automatically qualified - would he have got a pick over Meronk..? I’m not so sure. Course fit, data, chemistry - so many things to consider with picks.

Meronk must be gutted not to be picked whereas Bob McIntyre must be praying his form comes back Otherwise think this is a great team Donald has picked and must have a realistic chance of winning it

No sure - Bob seems to the eye to be feast or famine - though his points tally suggests otherwise. Really interesting to see how he goes - great to have a Scot in the team

Meronk not getting picked is ridiculous, Donald has gone for sentimentality ( Rose because he lost out to Poulter last time ) and pals ( Lowry for Rory ) . I get picking Rose as he has real experience and mentality when it comes to the Ryder cup but Lowry has no place in that team , hasn’t played that many matches and his general play recently is poor .
