This time around, Ash and Trev discuss the sad events of the Heysel Disaster. From poor decisions to gross negligence, the outcome of this would be a loss of life and the ban of English clubs from European competition for 5 years.

Guys this is a horrible take on such a key moment of Modern football. Such a small amount of research done by the sound of it and laughing during it. This isn’t some sociology nor politics paper for your university course. Absolutely dreadful I’m afraid. It was a blight on English football and fans WERE culpable for others death.

Was England in danger of not being permitted to play in Mexico 1986? The treatment of fans in Seville, and also Liverpool in Paris 2022, was disgusting. UEFA has a different moral compass to all of us.

Sorry you feel that way, Darren. We were quite clear at the outset that it was a terrible situation and that we wanted to cover it as respectfully as possible. With regards to culpability, on several occasions we highlighted that fans absolutely played a role in what happened but I disagree that ALL of the blame lies at their door

I don’t think you did such a grave story the justice it deserved and the almost light hearted responses at times made me quite angry as did the pointing fingers at the government instead of actually understanding the situation. Football fans were out of control at this time and this although not stopping it, this highlighted that actions needed to be taken to punish. But ultimately the lack of real analysis and the poor delivery at times wasn’t good and no matter the ridiculous decisions, laughing during a pod where we are talking about deaths was very poor. If you listen back I doubt you would air it in its current form.

I’m not sure Steffen, but I can believe it given the strength of feeling towards English fans at that time. I wasn’t in Seville but the reports were awful and I think fan restraint was a big part of why the situation didn’t escalate. A frustrating aspect for me was that UEFA acknowledged fault for the Liverpool CL final but to my knowledge never apologised to Rangers. Shows their disdain for Scottish clubs

Another excellent episode guys

Think you’d be terrified to read about Mobuto Sese Seko if you cover Zaire

Trev @JimmyBell_Loyal

I’m also sorry you feel this way but of course, you are entitled to your opinion. However I respectively disagree with you.

Liverpool have won it 6 times - they had a cool wee ditty about winning it five times post Istanbul then they beat spurs in Madrid. Think they might be behind Milan in third in the all time list. Munich have won it at least 5 times too

Excellent pod, tough subject to cover but think you guys did a great job…enjoying the new series :)

I watched this live on tv as an 18 yr old. Lived in England and went to football regularly at various levels, non-league through to internationals. Haven’t watched anything on Heysel since that night. At the time being treated like an animal by football authorities, the police, club/ stadia owners etc, was normal. This in itself bred a mindset amongst a proportion of fans that it gave them a reason to behave in an anti-social manner. Some were going to fight irrespective of circumstances anyway. My particular memories of the whole debacle were Why were the Liverpool fans allowed to rampage for as long as they did before the police took more control? There was a Celtic shirt running around in the Liverpool end and was involved in a lot of the disorder. After the wall collapsed a Juventus fan amongst those who had now invaded the running track was shown pointing a gun he had taken out of his jacket. Awful to watch, even worse following the events in the days after, with each organisation involved in putting on the final blaming everyone & anyone to avoid censure. As ever this was trumpeted as the nadir, the turning point, the final straw and how wrong has that turned out to be?
