The dreadful events of the last few weeks have once again thrown the issue of political expression within football under the spotlight, with fans and boards of certain clubs at loggerheads. Can politics ever be removed from sport? Is it all virtue signalling and pantomime triumphalism and if so, does that do damage or harm? David and Martyn discuss this and more.

Politics in Sport annoys me almost as much as when a bands singer/solo artist starts preaching about Trump or whatever. Mate, yer in Glasgow, fuck up! I dont want lectured, I paid to get a cpl hours peace and enjoyment!

Douglas Innes

This will be interesting ....... before listening id say they should be separate for example central based bears be more Labour/socialist minded compared to NE Bears probably a few Tory/Snp/...... tartan tories as well.

Lorraine Murray

No matter what we would like to be the case, it's impossible for politics to be kept out of sport. Politics is everywhere in life and sport is a key part of modern life. People and organisations in sport are powerful because they have money and influence. Often this power can be harnessed for good... Marcus Rashford's meals for kids during the holidays, Gary Linnekar actively supporting his colleagues, Russia's ban from international football but the power of sport is also used for sports washing. The challenge is to harness the power of sport for good. Easy peasy :)

Sandy

Resonated on a lot of levels

George Higgins

You cannot separate them. Politics is everywhere . Being able to afford to even go to a match is influenced by politics. People have their views and some want to express them. At Rangers and Celtic too there must be a disconnect between the perception of the fan base and the reality. A lot is determined by groups who shout the loudest but that doesn’t tell the whole story. The clearest example is the Old Firm fans. Generally speaking nowadays they come from the same demographic yet are perceived to have opposite views on many issues. Not every Rangers fan supports Israel or loyalism or the Royal family and not all Celtic fans are Palestinian Nationalist or Republican. Those who don’t support what is seen as the respective clubs position keep quiet but they are still there. I’d prefer politics to be kept away from grounds as it’s not really a forum for detailed political discussion to put it mildly.

Gary Brown

Another very interesting episode. Thanks Martyn & David.

Gregg

I don’t think you can separate the two but clubs would love it to be the case. On Palestine/ Israel - I read a big long book on it a few years ago which was pretty neutral - it was thoroughly depressing. It’s far more nuanced than the black and white way it’s been put over. Sadly I don’t think it’ll be resolved in my lifetime. Anyway - keep politics out of H&H sorry.

Douglas Innes

Now having listened its kinda where I'd thought how we see ourselves which is a broad church and a fan base who are tolerant of others views within our support......... Ps , I did have 1 acquaintance who said my political views were down to who I ( we ) supported as he was a film believer in Independence after 30 minutes discussion he changed his mind on where my political leanings came from and he knows its not from what happens in the stands on matchdays

stephen

Great Pod guys but haven't St Pauli recently been ostracised from that "Liberal Football Clubs" over their backing of Israel 🤷🏻‍♂️ I wonder if this now makes them a Far-Right club given the "rules" around this 🤷🏻‍♂️

Scotty

Fantastic listen as always from you guys. Cerebral, inoffensive & sensitively debated. You can’t remove politics from professional sport, it’s too engrained. The big sporting entities, including Rangers will use it to increase their bottom line, fact of life. It should always be sport first though & that’s why the piggery is in uproar at the moment. After years of almost unbroken success how do you hold onto your oppressed delusion? Jump on somebody else’s.

Martin Boyd

Great chat lads , like David said the older some of us get the less certain we are of old certainties. It is all a pantomime but no pantomime has ever given me the joy of a Leipzig or a last minute Alex Miller winner at Parkhead . The older I become the more I’m reaching for Marcus Aurelius and only worrying about things I can change and worrying less what people think of me and my views. I have to say the Forum has become one of my favourite pods although the wait for Martyn to finish a sentence sometimes tests my patience 🤣

Steve Clark

Many of our supporters (including me) when it comes to unionism was primarily focused on Northen Ireland especially during the troubles,it’s shifted to Scotland since the rise of the snp.

Ian Gillies

Monosyllabic wanking machine 😂

Heart and Hand

Yes, it’s been interesting to watch. People berating them for letting them down, as if they were somehow owed something.

Heart and Hand

I’ve been asked about a politics show but tbh I can’t really see the point. It would be biased to the viewpoint of whoever did it, cause division and I doubt any of us feel we have ‘the’ answers.

Gregg

My last sentence was aimed at myself - not you guys. Should have added a smiley 😊

John Smith

It goes way beyond sport. Politics, specifically a certain kind of politics, has been put in all forms of media and entertainment now. There’s 2 groups of people in my view: People who want to be left alone and people who won’t leave us alone.

Graeme Macpherson

Fantastic discussion gents. As an active participant on FF, I do sometimes wonder about the identity thing as I am pro-UK, but don't subscribe to the love of flags and the cosplay you described. Tin hat firmly on, but I've never really been bothered about the politics of NI because there is no direct link to me or my family, so never got into the loyalist stuff. I respect what our armed forces have done, but don't feel the need to lionise them - same as I wasn't out clapping for the NHS etc. I guess what I'm saying is my identity is not wrapped up in my love of Rangers - I want our team to win everything, and I've got that in common with every other person in the ground, but sometimes I think that's all there is in common, but that's all we need, right?

Mr J K Murray

it maybe said that the ignorance we have due to not understanding, for arguments sake today, the langauge of the spoken in the middle east, if we did we would have invaded them due to what the really say, hic, (Genesis 11:7 KJAV)It came out in our last game in scribble. They' did not light up wembley with the nation flag of Israel but did with Ukraine ( a very corrupt state even in a state of nature at the moment, war), Has it something to do with Emerites buying our clubs, laudering monies for our west players, the game in focus is corrupt from decisions on the field to off it, accepted by most sane beings or it would not fuction, this all filters into the sport, if supermarkets were bare of food there would be uncontrolled social disorder, like football, if you took that away it would provoke a similar reaction, if you see it for what it is, sober lol, & see it is bried & circuses, take it or leave it, Im glad for tv coverage but it is not like group real life week in week out football (never had that) who would opine differently, sips water, ty, for reading hic

Nicky Cuzin

Sport has to have a political message, whether some like it or not. I come from Russia, terrorists country which invaded and began killing people of the neighbouring state, which led to massive exodus of normal Russians from the regime. Russian sport was banned as a result and it sent a message. Things like that must be done to show what is unacceptable in a modern society. Same goes for all anti discrimination campaigns etc. People who hide behind ‘sport is beyond politics’ are hypocrites who live under the rock at best

stefan strzelecki

I think the celebration of barbarism by the Celtic supporters is infused by a systemic anti-semitism that lies dormant within the new so called progressive Scotland . I have to confess that for me Rangers as a club , are a symbol of all that is good about being British. Had that heinous messaging been displayed at our stadium in support of terrorists , our supporters would have dealt with it in house. I think our club support is the greatest , because of our values of unity, discipline , respect , and true loyalism. I know personally that we are a broad church club , more cosmopolitan than others care to recognise . Our modern British identity as a club , must remain shining brightly as welcoming beacon of hope for football supporters. That’s what Rangers mean to me. 💙 Really enjoyed the pod, great listen.

Hendi

Good pod, well done. Cant argue with any of it 👍

Steven Harvey

Really enjoyed this pod. A wee break from the norm but very interesting and a top listen. Also, we are clearly the good guys and they are the bad guys in this city 😆

jason hart

Didn't expect to have enjoyed this as much as I did as im also 'jaded' ... really good intelligent discussion on a very sensitive subject .. agree with most of what was said gents ... loved the point about people having the option to actually do something about the cause they wave there flag (virtually) about but chose not to other than post a Facebook comment .. so so true ... great job as always Also I'm pro 'earthquake but only in the locality of carparkhead (but only want to see structural damage )

Stephen

Enjoyed this. Don’t particularly like politics in sport. Find it hard to take seriously when the people who make the most noise about these things tend to be the least educated and rational people in the stadium and have probably never set foot in the countries they claim to want to defend . Would much prefer fans to focus on social issues that would have more chance to help rather than divide people.

Steven L

Modern day Scotland is deeply divided, that will bleed into everything, I have found myself changing my stance on things as I get older (I’m by no means old) I was very right as a young man but I’m more central these days, it doesnt bother me what people think really or do, the world is mental and I let it be that. My opinions will be kept to myself (mostly) Good listen, decent balance of opinions etc.

Allister

Guys that was a superb pod

Jamiedfa

That was deep, bring back Scott and all the knob gags!😜

Callum Dinnen

Anyone berating St Pauli for their stance are clearly missing how bad the optics would be for a German club to support genocidal actions against a Jewish populace (something which is literally Nazi and the complete opposite of what St Pauli supposedly stand for.)

Pedro

Fantastic pod guys. On Martyns point towards the end about the media taking the liberal progressive narrative towards the end, there was a Chris McLaughlin piece on the BBC this week (Wed 25th Oct) that exemplified this. Also showed his love in with the other mob in the east end
