Been wanting a show on the A league for ages - well done guys - looking forward to Auckland having a new team in the A League next Season

Steff Clarke

The mighty Phoenix topping the League. The good thing about the re-emergence of the Knights (or whatever they call themselves) is no more bloody 'home' games in AUK! The bad thing is splitting the very small football pis in NZ in half. It'll probably mean both NZ franchises will fold within 2 seasons. We're finally playing with a recognizable style, some width, and actually converting chances.

Wow, it’s like I’m from an alternative universe. The A League is popular? It gets less interest here than the Test Pattern, and it’s getting worse. I went to the first ever A League game back in 2005 and it was a sellout, now it averages only a few thousand pax per game. It can’t get a proper TV contract either and the days of it having decent players is long gone. The A League is pure pish and full of plastic fans. Funding imbalance my arse. The Australian Sports Commission gave $6m to soccer this year - rugby league and AFL didn’t get anything because they aren’t Olympic sports. More kids play soccer than any other sport in Australia, but they don’t kick on because the professional league is so shite. The AFL and NRL have TV contracts worth over $1bn so they pump all their own money into junior development (note, not government money) which soccer doesn’t do because they don’t have the same level of income… because the A League is so shite. Have I mentioned how shite the A League is?

John Gillespie

Not sure about this - no one I know has any real love for the Phoenix up here - I’m hoping on the Korean community taking a big interest they had a huge presence at the last national game

Pondo Sinatra

Really good listen! Enjoyed that! 👏

When I seen the title, I thought you guys were talking about AFL. I got excited 😂😂

Dave White

I'd love to see a decent league in Australia but the current competition is terrible. I took the kids, who are massive AFL fans to a Melbourne City match the other week and both thought it was terrible, a couple of thousand fans inside a 40000 seater stadium and a standard that would look bad in the SPL. There's something badly wrong that a sport that is hugely popular for kids to play can't run a decent professional league. Probably doesn't help that they sold tv rights to a streaming service that hardly anybody subscribes to. It's almost like they have modelled themselves on the SPFL.

Interesting listen . Im in Adelaide and have only ever watched our team a couple of times on the TV, I'll be honest and say I would rather watch the Aussie Rules. I there is a lot of football for the kids at school and amateur but Aussie rules is king and always will be., both our teams will get 50000 for there gsmes where ad Adelaide utd will get on average 10000. Just on another point Rangers had soccer camp for a week both here and in Perth a couple of months ago which went well and have signed up for another 2 years so hopefully we may pick up some gems.

Steff Clarke

It's shiteness is partof it's charm. You could level those criticsms at Scotland, outside of the OF. In Australia/NZ they don't have the tradition, so fans are fair weather 'plasticfans', but again the same is true in Scotland for most teams, that have 2000 season ticket holders and want 25000 seat's at Hampden when they make a cup final.

Iain Campbell

How would you suggest that changes? If its the most popular participation sport, in what way can that be translated into spectators ? Also the funding comment came from the most prominent Aussie coach in the form of Postecoglu

Steff Clarke

Bloody typical arrogant Aussies though, never mentioned the Kiwi side. Referees are always so homers to the Aussies, we get much less money (not buying Central Coast have the smallest budget). Pound for pound NZ arguably is the best sporting country in the world, but we are always refreeed differently from the Aussie whingers. Moan, moan moan. We also have to travel much further for every game, minimum 3/4 hours flight, or 8 hours for Perth and it's more like 5 - 15° here, not always sunny. Sama all Aussies always cheating, sane all Aussies always cheating, a dingo ate your baby, a dingo ate your baby na na na nah, na na na nah!

Steff Clarke

Never mentioned Singh from the Wellington Phoenix going to Bayern Munich first team, we have a good record of selling players to Europe, look at Catache playing in Serie A

Steff Clarke

I know I'm having a moan, but a Kiwi perspective would be refreshing, we add a lot to be A League, with a second NZ side as of next season. Happy to pitch in BTW, I've done pods previously in H&H

Jock Paterson

Enjoyed that. Possibilities to go round the world with this. 👍

Of course Postecoglou is going to bellyache about how much money he supposedly doesn’t get. That’s his style. A League will only get its audiences back when the standard improves. They shouldn’t have expanded the League, as that weakened the standard. I also think that playing in summer is not a good idea, but that’s just me.
