Martyn, Adam and David are here with a brand new show for 2024 which details the history of the Champions League. Its games, its stars, its drama and its impact on the game as a whole. In the first episode they have a look at the romantic fondness for the old European Cup, why it had to change and a closer examination of that 'trial' season, 1991/92, the year before football changed forever.

I think this is going to be a great show

While listening to the pod I watched the highlights of the final and I'm hoping I can keep this up for the duration of this series. I have to agree with Adam about the wall, it was awful. Instead of helping Pagliuca I think in the end he can't really see the ball until its too late, whether it would have mattered I don't know

Takes me back to that sampdoria title winning season. I remember as a 10/11 yr old going to my uncle's house because he picked up BSB through his tv aerial, bk in the day where you could get certain satellite channels through your TV. Late 90s I capitalised on getting the old Thompson, Ferguson and beko TV's for sky channels. Seem to recall a league clincher for sampdoria going to inter and defending superbly then snatching a goal late on followed by a pagliuca pen save during that match. Some great memories from that season

Great show. Good idea Adam. The usual great discussion (and recollection) from David & Martyn. Thanks lads. Looking forward to the rest of this series (the first few episodes anyway😆😉!) The time period and the game of that time can not be underestimated in the impact of the romance / anguish of the European Cup. Like the FA/SFA cups, one of the very few live matches available on TV. And quite frankly a rare treat, like a summer holiday or Christmas / birthday gifts. Not so much now where availability & consumption is effectively limitless & unrestricted in football and life. The glamour & excitement of unknown teams and different styles of playing from different countries, like the World Cups, was a mystery and amazingly intriguing. Clash of styles, cultures & countries compared to todays Fantasy Football using real players. It's all the same style template, copied by all. Simply the globalisation of the game. That 91/92 European Cup change in format & approach coincided with a more general approach for more open attacking football from far more top level teams. Italia 90 and the EC 91 really were the bottoming out of the ultra defensive era at the very highest level. Ironically driven by the Italians who'd asphyxiated the game in the first place! Roll on the next episodes - at least until it becomes the Champions plus also rans of favoured countries League.

Excellent first episode chaps, looking forward to the rest of the series. Interesting to note Mancini v Pep & Begiristan in that final 🩵 Also I think Pep has turned Ederson into that long pass Libero for City.

This has got the makings of another belter of a series lads

It's interesting how people still hanker back for an era when the old European Cup era was 36 years, while the Champions League era has been 32 years and counting.

Late to the party, but that was a brilliant listen. Really looking forward to listening to the other shows. The two slots for Germany due to the final season of the DDR Oberliga before reunification is quite an interesting story. There is a book called The Turning Season by Michael Wagg, which looks at the final season of Easy German football. It is actually quite unfair how the Bundesliga sides were decided post reunification, and east Germany get shafted in the process
