Rangers might be quite good again. There might be tactics being used that help that. Who knows?

Adam & Ally are back to chat through some things they've noticed over the last couple of week and answer some more of your lovely questions including:

Left and right wing balance - Ridvan & Borna are very different players, what impact does this have on the left wing? Tav & McCausland are a settled pairing, how do they play together?

We use Tactical Pad to illustrate this short segment - you can watch the video here or just listen to the audio.

The next part of the show looks at Cantwell and Silva. What they bring to the team, Cantwell's change of role in the last few months and who should be playing as the centre forward.

We finish by discussing Connor Goldson's defensive lapse to give away the equaliser on Tuesday and look at that recurring theme and how it could be prevented.

Lads in the metrics Souttar is a monster, he generally rates well on sites like sofascore and fotmob because of his duels won/actions and the like. Should there be geniune discourse on him being the starting RCB next season with us trying to bring in a good ball playing LCB to play alongside him? Goldsons use of the ball in big games has crucified us in the past and I don't rate him as highly in terms of actual defending as I do Souttar. Not sure if you agree, what do you reckon? Great pod, cheers.

Scott

Would certainly invest in an LCB of that mould and let Souttar and Goldson fight it out for the other berth.

Gregg

I’d happily get rid of souttar - just don’t rate him. He is at fault for goal after goal which isn’t a coincidence - though he has played well of late. He’s third choice for me - bimehind balogun and goldson

Russ

Aye that's fair enough mate, for me I'd have Souttar, Balogun and Goldson in order. If we can see Goldsons only passes are outwide to Tav or a long diag to the channel/straight one up top in big games then those opponents can too. Seville was the start of that for me, he killed us on the deck that night. Has done since in OF games too.

Mark

That was a great listen. Nice optimistic Tactics Talk. Thanks gents.

I'm somewhere in the middle. I think goldson is excellent. Has he made mistakes , yes he has but giving how available he is he is a rock for us. Almost playing every single game? Thats impressive. Balogun and souttar also both two terrific defenders. Individually and Collectively they have all made errors but we do have the best defence in the league and I feel we are fairly comfortable right now. Could we have better defenders on our budget? Maybe? Will they always be available like goldson? Who knows. However we could have souttar and Balogun both out at the same time as injury prone so I do think we need to upgrade younger/fitter CH in the summer. Don't think Davies and King are the answer personally.

Scott Watson

Surely Souttar isn't robust enough to plan as a starting pick? He does seem brilliant at times but he seems to make the most costly errors of our defenders - at least to my eye, I'd be curious if the stats back that up

Graeme Brown

Brilliant. I always enjoy the pod and pick up on some new things to look out for over the next few games. I also appreciate the very welcome addition of some common sense to the current hot takes of the wider support (guy sitting next to me on Tuesday has written Cortes off as “utter pish” already). I can’t remember whether it’s something you’ve mentioned before or maybe I heard / read elsewhere, but is there more of a plan to get Tav isolated in space outside the box, round about where Cantwell scored against Hibs away to allow him more shots from distance? There certainly seems to be some rotation going on between him, McCausland and Canntwell over the last couple of games to free that pocket of space up. Really stood out in the first half against Aberdeen. Apologies if I’ve just copied your homework there!

Alistair Bain

Souttar is a perfect domestic level central defender, but really lacks the pace to excel at the European level. For my money Goldson is still the best defender we have at the club, but for sure hes started to decline. Can see this as a position we strengthen in the summer as & when Davies moves on.

Alistair Bain

Id agree theres been more emphasis to get Tavernier centrally & on the ball. Whereas he used to dribble the ball forward alot, hes now joining attacks as play develops on the left, which gives us an extra dimension should he have time/space to get shots off. Lundstram also gives him coverage protection off the ball, which causes less anxiety when the ball turns over. As we said in the show, having Tav & Ridvan available to step forward and press 2nd balls, it makes it harder for the opponent to create counter attacks.

Gregg

Passing from the back - you’re only as good as the movement of the players in front of you. For a couple of years it’s been obvious - when at the game - that the movement of our team is not great to say the least.

Souttar is as underrated as Goldson is overrated in my own view. Nothing scientific just the eye test and for a season I was bored of seeing goals go in and Goldson immediately tell someone else it was their fault. Regardless of preference Goldson is on the decline part of his career, by no means done of course, but we should have a plan in place and no sentiment when the transition to a new CB (and RB) is required. We need to stop over hyping guys and hanging onto them like we are desperado’s. Maybe a reflection of our lack of confidence in the transfer policy of recent years but we love to keep guys well past their sell by.

I always really enjoy the Tactics Talk pod. Thanks Adam for bringing the desire & interest about exploring the 'what, how & why' of the football being played and thanks Coach Ally for sharing your expertise and explaning things so clearly. This pod is a bolthole for the (seemingly few) actually interested in analysing, learning and understanding the football we are playing and why it's being done. Appears that far too many think they know better given all the 'advice' and opinon from the stands (hot takes as Graeme says). Based on? Their own exploits playing console games and 5s with their pals (however long ago that was!) it seems. Amazes me how many loud mouths don't know even basic rules of the game. This pod series, and patrons comments, are an oasis from the constant knee-jerk over-reation, (good & bad) from too big an element of our support. Thanks again Adam & Ally, keep up the good work. Interesting tweek to our full back play by PC. Don't reckon our traditional tactic is out completely but this is to add another dimension. For me Tues was Dessers best performance for Rangers. His hold up & link up work, movement round the field, speed and desire to do the thankless running & pressing was better than he's done before. PC always mentons the striker role is not just about goals and he praised Dessers work specifically. Goldson. Mr Reliable 90-95% of the time but like everyone has a mistake in him. Unfortunately for Connor when he makes a mistake it is almost guaranteed to result in a goal against. Always been like that. Cantwell seems to have got over his huff at being asked to play wider. Given the chance to play out & out #10 directly afterward he did not impress and was subbed noticably quickly. Think he's recovered from that rocky period pre-break and come back more 'centred' after it. Silva is a class act. Period. The bleating over Shankland overblown & under thought. The manager addressed the issue up front before the window even opened. This lad can play across the front 3, has scored & assisted from all positions. Has now played in 5 of the top 10 leagues in Europe (#1,6,7,8 & now us #10) scoring & assisting in all. Considered by the Portuguese to be not only a great talent but potentially a generational talent - high praise given the level of footballer they produce. He's 10 months older than Ross McCausland! Looking forward to the next show. Thanks again guys.

Gregg

We should always be looking on upgrades - hopefully part of the new regime. If we are phasing out goldson I don’t think souttar is it - he has a lot of good qualities and is easy on the eye when on the ball. For me he is currently 3rd choice and we should be looking for a new LCB in the summer - with souttar deputising for goldson

Callum Dinnen

Other than the initial injury he came to us with, he hasn't actually missed much through injury since about March/April last year has he?
