ARMY,

We have some very exciting news to share with all of you! 

Do you have room to add ONE more item to your New Year's Resolution list? (PLEASE SAY YES 😉)

At the beginning of the 2023, we will be launching a NEW video series focused on achieving something we've always wanted to: LEARNING A NEW LANGUAGE.

You've probably heard us state the following sentence in nearly every one of our BTS reaction videos: "IF ONLY WE KNEW HOW TO SPEAK/READ KOREAN..."

Well, the time has come...and we hope you will be interested in joining us on this journey. We truly believe that the Korean language is far too beautiful and nuanced to fully capture all of its meaning by relying on English translation alone. It's time to learn!

OUR GOAL: To become fluent in Korean by the time BTS returns from their military service in 2025.

HOW WE WILL LEARN:

  • We have hired an instructor (Teacher Wonji 👩🏻‍🏫) who we are excited for all of you to meet! She is a brilliant and extremely kind-hearted (baby ARMY?) from South Korea, who now lives in Indonesia. Teacher Wonji will provide us with customized Korean lessons every other week.
  • We will analyze BTS songs, lyrics, speeches, etc. to help us learn!
  • We will welcome any/all support and tutoring from ARMY patrons who are fluent in Korean!
  • We hope to visit South Korea at various points during our journey to put our learning into action! 

This video series / learning journey will reside here on Patreon in our $10 "All Access" Tier. ARMY Gold Members and current "All Access" Members will automatically be granted access to this new series. Stay tuned for more details. 

We will share the official NAME and THUMBNAIL for the series with all of you next week! Oh...and btw...class starts on January 2nd! 📚✏️ Enjoy the rest of your vacation.

I sort of know how to read basic Hangul! Hello to the both of you ✌️ This sounds like a wonderful plan and learning a new language is exciting. I love how BTS inspire people. To be fluent in korean is a goal i have for myself too. At first i tried to learn korean with the app Duolingo but the only thing my brain saved from this app is that ant is Gae-mi. Now i learn korean ,with my wonderful teacher Jennie, since Dec 2021. I am nowhere near fluent enough to hold a conversation but i am slowly getting better. It will be sometimes frustrating and but also so worth of the time you have to invest. Its a really beautiful language . I am ready 🫶

I tried learning Korean for like a week on Duolingo, but I found it really difficult. Learning this way with you guys should be more enjoyable! Hopefully by the Spring in 2024 I will be able to understand it, bc I’m planning to visit South-Korea (and Japan) with my sister!

Even though I have been listening to Kpop for a decade, I never really had the time to study it due to being in college, having a child, being a single mother and going through tough times. I just started my journey two years ago little by little whenever I have the time to slip at least 30 mins or an hour. I know very few words but I still need to practice. I do hope, just as you mentioned, that by the time BTS comes back, I’m at least a little fluent. Also, about two weeks ago, I went to my renovated donut shop close to my house. Little did I know, that the donut lady is from South Korea. I asked her and she said yes, and I started talking to her with my broken Korean. It’s true what people say about Korean people, they are very kind and supportive of you, even if your korean isnt perfect. She motivated me to practice more and even recommended me to stop by often so I can practice talking to her more often. It’s intimidating learning it at first, but I’m sure just like with everything else, all we need it practice practice practice :)

this is above my tier but i say YES! DO IT! i’ve been learning korean as a 3rd language for a year now and it’s my only asian language. it’s the complete opposite of everything i’ve ever known with english and spanish. warning that it IS very frustrating at times because, as you said, korean is a very nuanced language and there’s millions of little tiny things you have to remember. so many different ways of saying one thing. BUT don’t let it discourage you and keep pushing forward! it’s a very fun language to learn, i think you’ll really enjoy it! perhaps i’ll join the journey once you get started 💜

I actually have all the learning Korean with Tiny Tan, and a couple other things to learn Korean but it is hard doing it by yourself. No one to talk to so you have no clue if you are doing it right. I know some words and a bit of Hangul but like I said it is hard to learn it by yourself

Oh wow I never knew about Bangtan Academy! I've just read the information on their carrd and want to apply now in January. Was it hard to get in? It seems like a bit of a process. I'll have to read it a couple more times to fully understand what's required and when. English isn't my native language but I'm fairly fluent in it. It is so amazing that something like this exists. ARMYs are truly incredible! Thank you for mentioning BA here, otherwise I might have never known about it!

Do you have the TinyTan package too? That one is a bit easier to start with than the BTS one because it teaches Hangul in depth rather than the short chapter about it in the BTS package. If you are looking for something to help with reading Hangeul, I can also really recommend the free lesson from 90daykorean. I was amazed by how easy it was and how quickly I picked it up. Sadly I can't afford their whole program but I really enjoyed that free lesson. The Talk To Me In Korean website is also a really good resource. You don't even have to be a premium member for the 'Essential Korean' lessons, those are free. I did buy a whole year premium member subscription though because it was 50% off.

I started learning Korean about a year ago, but I haven't been studying as frequently because I'm a full time college student. Learning along with you guys will be the perfect motivation and push to get me back into learning like I've been wanting to. I can't wait!

I tried to learn using Duolingo but it wound up I was using it as a multiple choice and I didn’t learn a single word. I planned to get lessons for Christmas but it wasn’t in the budget. This is the perfect solution and I can easily add the $$ into my budget monthly. Thanks so much for doing this.

Normally I would say no but having someone to learn it with (our own lil online classroom if you will) makes it easier to want to want to learn! Can’t wait!!
