Mentioned it before but Goku sounds weird because theyre using the og recording Schemmel did. Sabat for sure redid the lines here because his og voice sounded off too. They were more so trying to sound like the Ocean dub actors that were previously dubbing the show before Funimation started doing it. Just odd that Sabat redid it for vegeta but they kept Gokus old recordings

I had to look this up, but starting with this episode it is the original funimation dub except the actors for Vegeta and Krillin did some redubbing. Maybe some other ones too, but Goku is weird because he wasn't redubbed. The first 67 episodes were dubbed later, so it's like comparing the performances from the first episode to the last episode back-to-back. Jeice is the same voice actor as Vegeta so he might've been redubbed. This would probably be the time to switch to Kai or subs if there ever was one.

This is the episode where Funimation dub took over. At first Goku sounds weird cause the VA is trying to do an impression of the OG Ocean Goku dub but his voice gets much better as the episodes go on and sounds like your regular Goku.(the new VA is the one who has been doing Goku voice ever since in super , the movies & games etc.

You don’t need to switch to Kai just give it a couple episodes. It gets right back to sounding like the character you’re used to it just took a couple episode episodes for them to not try to sound like the other dub company.

This the redub. Listening at work and it’s throwing me off . Some of the lines are the same but they’re delivered poorly compared to the OG

During this time (1999), funimation took over the dub after Ocean Dub ; they were attempting to be like Oceandub so that the kids/teen back then wouldn't notice the difference. This also cause goku to be mischaracterized making him sound like a Saturday Morning superhero than actually Goku. DBZ was Funimation's first dub; once they gotten better with understanding the actual story they redub some early episodes, complete the rest of the series (2000-2003) and dubbed Dragonball.

My fault for the paragraph. But they created the DBZ Kai dub to match the manga/OG sub word for word. I still recommend this dub, but I would say you should watch DBZ Kai on a later date to compare. I'll leave comments to let you know when the story differs from the Manga/og sub.

And Ginyu too. When that actor initially dubbed these episodes, he just sounded like a seasoned warrior. But now he just sounds almost elderly.

Some of the voice acting is going to be a little wonky until you get up to the Android saga. Goku's voice doesn't really sound normal until then. Vegeta's will sound actually pretty good for the most part until the Android saga. I guess because Chris Sabbath is a producer so when they were re-releasing the DVDs he must have put in more voice work than others. Freiza's voice is also re recorded I think it's a nice way to see how the voice is progress. And by the cell and buu saga I think the voices are at their peak.
