I guess for a lot of criminals, the penalty is worst than death because of the endless war they are forced to fight in, a war that lowkey seems like a losing one at that, even more so they are fighting for a system that’s actively torturing them by sending them on literal suicide missions, so there is no or very little pride or aspiration for fighting to protect your nation or humanity when you won’t get recognized for your efforts at all Like I think a way to think about it is kinda like Subaru from Re:Zero, how he ends up dying a bunch for the sake of his friends and everything but ultimately him giving his life is HIS choice even when he subjected to so many gruesome deaths but now think that and instead of him willingly fighting for the people he loves he is forced to fight and die for people he don’t even care about, people who’ve actively betrayed or sabotaged him, people who will take the credit for his achievements and accomplishments, society never knowing the good you’ve done while constantly treating you as subhuman mind you every time you die and revive your memory slowly fades and you go mad and become a zombie mf like homie with the axe lol yeah just kill me 😂
