I just had to deal with a reader on Royal Road again and finally blocked them from messaging me. Wanted to thank you all for being sane and enjoyable to talk to. It's nice to have a place to retreat to. It's rare, but I get some readers who really, really want to tell me all the things they don't like about a story. I tried explaining things to this person and telling them to have some patience. He wanted 'more character' development in chapters I wrote two years ago and eventually told me I was a lazy writer. I really don't know what he wanted me to do.Taking the rest of tonight off and leaving Milo in the middle of a conversation with Hecate. Georgie is playing with her dogs and will enjoy the extra time.

Sorry you had to deal with (another) crazy person :) And we the (non-crazy) fans are happy to be here for you.

That's something I've never understood. If you don't like the story, then find another. All the stories on RR there's bound to be something you like better. Don't try to browbeat an author into changing his vision.

David Gleiberman

That is so frustrating. I have loved the character development, and if they felt the story should be different, then they should have instead of private messaging the author, joined the fan conversations with the understanding that at the end of the day, the author is the creator of their world, and their decisions are law. If you disagree with that, their are literally thousands of authors they can check out.

Might be the thing, when we as the readers convince ourself that its our story and you own us😀 I once spend months on building an app, put it for free I the app store and there were bitter complains that I didn't 'fix' any improvement within hours Thank you for the patience and keep us entertained with YOUR story and the wonderful characters you bestow upon us

Duck_Giblets

Take it easy, look after yourself first and foremost. The story will wait.

RedInkQuill

I’m totally not crazy. Super sane over here

Not Telling

Still love the story and tell people to read it all the time. How's the pup doing?

Duke of Coffee

Frankly those people you can safely ignore.

First, you're awesome, and take some time for self-care. Your mental health is important and we all understand. Second, I once was reading an author's side project - loved it so much. Then a chapter came and the author killed off one of the most important characters, very much the emotional heart of the story. I felt devastated and enraged, and ended up pouring all that out in a heated email to the author. After a couple back and forth exchanges, I realized I was being a jackass, and sent an email apologizing for losing my temper and thanking her for the story to date, even if I still hated the plot decision. Something she said when she emailed me back stuck with me. She said, it's OK - the fact that you got this worked up over my story means my writing really connected with you, which is one of the most sincere compliments I can get. What I'm trying to say is, no one takes the time to write out long screeds, if you didn't reach them in a way that mattered.

I made some really nasty things happen in the story I was writing (and still rewriting). When people got upset about it, I told them my goal was to get them to feel emotions and I'd made it clear at the beginning that this story wasn't going to be all sunshine and roses. I imagine the person who wrote that story knew full well how people would react. Creating that reaction kinda was the point.

Johan

I dont get these readers if u dont like the story fine stop reading it .

Philldoran

This is madness, no, this is people who won’t/(don’t think they’ll) be held accountable for their words. God, Karen’s and Kens are scary.

Joaquim

This quote fits: cause fuck'em, thats why

BelligerentGnu

I mean, I still dropped the story. Stories pay for triumph with pain, but you still have to get your money's worth. Heck, some stories neglect to make a purchase.

NameGame

"But I don't want to go among mad people," TheWalrusKing remarked. "Oh, you can't help that," said the NameGame: "we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad."

BeauZoe

*sips tea* can't please everyone. Really, should we even try?

Daniel Zellmer

Character development? I mean the right place for that type of suggestion is “Hey author I hear you are planning to release this in ebook form on kindle could you please add character development in this chapter.” and then leave the poor author alone

ranoche

Royalroadl can be incredibly toxic. The author of savage divinity was repeatedly hounded because he told them to piss off and he will write how he pleased. Just remember it's your story and no one elses

Axavia

I’ve had to deal with that before too on another site. This jackass would just leave like 50 comments saying “mistake” riddled throughout the latest chapter. Never explained what I’d messed up, and when I asked for clarification he just went on a rant about how all authors are terrible. Just remember that the story is your own, and you should write it as you please. Don’t get discouraged like I did, the world would be a more boring place without your writing!

my family got me assessed !, I am eccentric not mad or crazy , I get irate at times and do waste my money but like when persons tell me "pull your head in " .

Just want to say thank you for the incredible stories. Loving the butcher! Fantastic character development. One of the first stories where I love all the different POV’s equally.

I only discovered RoyalRoad a couple months ago, by stumbling blindly upon it by accident. Some individuals might be as toxic as black mold, and leave equally horrid stains ...but! Without the platform, I'd never have experienced these jewels, never known about the other half-dozen other tales I'm also waiting to continue with varying levels of good-natured patience. Honestly, I just finished your final chapter of Tunnel Rat on RoyalRoad and experienced their conversation mere minutes ago. I'm sad that there's no more to binge for days straight, but consoled by just how incredibly rewarding looking forward to new chapters will be. Such Joy!! I'm intently watching both Sedgwick and Hab block:E, and eagerly yearn for more. Your world is a precious, flawless work of art that I'm going to properly purchase copies of as soon as they're available.
